  1. I would say that it depends a lot on the vitality of the tree pre pollard and the size of the final pollard points , more often than not with larger diameter growth I will leave it 4-5 cm proud of the knuckle , younger growth tends to get removed back to the knuckle where appropriate
  2. Sadly we have a stainless flue liner , the problem is keeping the thing in over night , the balance between it going out or burning through a firebox full of hardwood is fine and invariably the balance can not be found haha . Why oh why did I think it was a great idea to heat my house solely from the wood burner/ central heating lol
  3. Pop to your motor factors and pick up some EGR valve cleaner , fairly simple job and as long as you have the tools it's cheap as chips
  4. Just looking for some advice - can you burn coal in a Woodwarm stove ?
  5. In most cases if a vehicle won't start during cold weather it is for a good reason , easy start is not addictive to the engine , however it is the the fool that sees it as a quick fix . If your vehicle won't start then look into why .
  6. Just out of interest what has the servicing been like and if " ford spec" oil used ? It may also be worth knowing that should you blank your EGR off and get a particularly retentive mot inspector he may just fail your ranger , I would imagine that your throttle pedal is flyby wire and you will require either one or both potentiometers replacing .
  7. Another cracking and informative video reg . happy new year
  8. Wicked thank you , that works out well as I have about 175 kg to play with . Well let's just hope it's a half decent machine lol
  9. Hi guys I have been lent a carlton 2500-4 grinder and need to pick it up , I'm just wondering if anyone has one and if so what the machines weight is and what it's dimensions are - length and width . The job it's required for is to take it over a pedestrian bridge but a method statement is required - hence the need for info , hopefully the 2500-4 is a decent machine ?? Cheers in advance Happy new year
  10. Some of the most important things aside from access are - taking your time and remember once it's gone it's gone , I see all to many hedges that look amazing apart from the bit where someone has cut too much off and tried to blend it in , keep a can of gt85 or similar and every time you fuel the trimmer give the cutters a good coating of lube - I have found this allows the trimmer to work at optimum speed without the rein and sap slowing it back , and lastly make sure that you allow your self plenty of time , it's easy to rush a trimming a hedge and it really can make the difference between an amazing job and an ok' ish job
  11. I think a lot of it was due to the demand/ request to enable fleet owners to personalise their fleet strait off of the production line , there is a large fleet owner down here that runs 12 tractors in his own ( mustard/ baby crap ) yellow , ok looks a little putrid but you know who's machine it is . I believe many of the bigger forestry outfits overseas do the same but on a bigger scale
  12. It's all to easy to judge a subby/ member of staff because they are not prepared to climb a tree which by the sounds of it in this case was justifiable , but the facts are the facts - climbing partially wind blown trees is something that should be avoided at all costs . If your boss is so sure that it's fine then why not haul his sorry arse up there ?
  13. Just out of interest , if this were a job where the actual homeowner felt so aggrieved that he/she took legal proceeding with the view of you being 100 responsible for your actions what would you do ? What would you have documented that you took all reasonable steps to ensure that you had the permission of the owner ? . I'm not having a go but really have a think , I currently have a customer that feels the need to not pay and yes it is going down the court route , what was the first thing that Thomas Higgins asked for ?? my paper Trail , had I not had a paper trail and evidence to substantiate my claims it would have fallen apart in court . Thankfully there is a paper trail and the dependent had no room to argue
  14. There really is no shouting match , totally up to you what you do in future , but in short - create a paper trail just in case
  15. You crack me up , your wasted in this game , should have worked for citizens advice ,
  16. Still traceable but of course you know that don't you
  17. Almost as good as the old spice in your school mates kecks on swimming day , my father thought me that on and wondered why I had his old spice and did it lol
  18. Ever heard of taking all reasonable steps to ensure you have permission ? Yes it may be false but if the actual owner decided to take legal action against you , you can at least prove you have been responsible and done everything in your power to ensure you have permission - do you not agree this would be a wise idea and certainly give some clarity to what could be a nasty legal battle?
  19. Yeah he seemed genuine , just like he seemed to be a traveler with a yourkshire hire accent? Did you expect anything less ? Or do you expect the less honest people to wear a badge or sound less genuine than the next customer ? yes actually in business you need to be thorough and make sure that you actually do have a paper trail , it's totally up to you but if you want to be taken the mick out of and have to work a weekend for nothing then carry on , but what I'm saying is that it is avoidable So the guy does not live there , get the address he does live at and get a landline number - call the landline number to confirm the job and the works listed - this way you are eliminating the risk that you have a false number or that the person on the nd of the phone is not the same person you met and knows nothing about any works at another address. Or you may find the number works and the person is who they say they are and that the works are correct - you now have a number that's traceable even if the person turns out not to be the land owner or have any right to authorise work .
  20. Huck really ?? Is it that hard ?? no signature = no work , in this case had the guy signed then at least there would have been some documented proof to give the actual land owner when he gets in touch and at at the very least helps to prove that you had taken all reasonable steps to ensure that you had consent to carry out the work. In this day in age a paper trail is as important as the tools to do the job .
  21. Well today was the last Sunday since October that I have been down in the village putting up Christmas lights , for the fishing community Christmas can be a pretty bleak time of year both financially and emotionally , almost every fishing family or the families of fishermen have lost a loved , family member or close friend . Making the prt come to light is just one small gesture for all that have lost someone to the see . And having a young family myself it's a pretty lowly way to say merry Christmas . Once they have been switched on this Friday I will get some pictures to share with you all . Merry Christmas
  22. I have both a 550xp and a 560xp , I find the 550 is great for teaching and leaving the apprentice use but in all honesty I find it sluggish , underpowered and slow for using as your main grind saw . I would highly rate both saws but for day to day work I would be going with the 560
  23. What deep heat covered hands ? Ok I guess there is something for everyone out there lol
