  1. Agreed to an extent but do you think I can get wood turners to show an interest? 'Too big', 'too small', 'wrong shape', 'it'll split'... There is the odd exception (Steve!) but most of it goes in the firewood pile. Not that I study species' burning qualities but I get the impression that (dry) holly burns quietly, i.e. it doesn't spit or crack and it gives a gently flame - no roaring fire comes from it.
  2. Is this an end to dodgy meets in motorway service stations then Steve?! I thought you fitted the role well I'll say 'best of luck' to you but you don't need it; quality shall prevail. Jon
  3. Bergenia (Elephant's Ears) and Ceanothus in flower today in the client's garden.
  4. As a 16-year old I obviously didn't give a hoot about the problems caused except when I couldn't write my exam answers because I couldn't grip the pen. It was cricket 7 days a week that summer; the pitches were hard and fast, the outfiield correspondingly so. Running about all day in 27°C pouring sweat didn't faze us; we just made the most of it. Of course I'm now a Grumpy Old Man and breaking sweat in 23° results in instant moaning about the heat. I hate the heat!
  5. I don't know whether it's true but my daughter quoted the other day that the South-East saw 35 hours of sun for the whole of November. Beau, do you remember the summer of '76? I was doing my O-levels in a gym with a floor to ceiling south-west facing glass wall.
  6. The Met Office are showing '10% chance of rain' here so obviously it's been peeing down for the last half hour. 60% chance at 4pm today so I'm starting on the Ark after me bagel. They should have never introduced that 'supercomputer' thingy; forecasts have gone down the pan since.
  7. Tomatin on the A9; there are/were one each side of the road.
  8. The quick answer to all your questions is no but have you considered somehow using the floor-mounted C-rails as your sliders? I'm not sure how exactly but as sliders generally involve rollers and rails you could be halfway there with the C-rails.
  9. You'll probably need to tweak the L screw slightly (¼ of a turn perhaps), then adjust the idle but once done the saws will be sweet. You'll never look back, believe me.
  10. I had this a couple of weeks ago but just after firing off a snotty message to the seller asking him if he was aware how they treat his customers the driver appeared with the parcel! I asked him what was going on and he fully admitted that the 'no-one at home' txt was done by him to make it look like he'd tried to deliver inside the 1-hour delivery slot and hence he didn't acquire a failed delivery. The seller took the matter up with thecompany the next day and I got a phone call from 'a supervisor' apologising and explaining that it had all happened due to new software that the drivers were struggling with! She seemed unaware that the driver had put his hands up to me the previous day which suited me as I didn't want to land him in it; the poor guy's just trying to pay the bills while under the cosh from ridiculous management practices.
  11. Not a problem; the uprights are set at the relevant 9,10 or 12" spacing and you run the saw halfway between them. (As an aside I can empty the rack of cut logs straight over the pickup tailgate by lifting it up and over). Is the degree of precision you seem to be after necessary?
  12. A PSI Powerbox is great; it's a plug-in, not a remap. I get 32-33mpg (Navara) with a mixture of journey lengths and load carrying, trailer towing included.
  13. I have a Buckingham Logstation! I've got racks for 9", 10" & 12" logs. It'll free stand on the ground too.
  14. Funny you say that actually. I did my 30/31 there 12 years ago; one instructor was OK, one was very good but not mine and one - mine - just didn't want to be there. Knowledge gained since suggests that I was taught the bare minimum - enough to pass the assessment. But give the place a chance; that was years ago and the biggest issue was with one individual.
  15. I should leave her muffler alone; you'll get arrested.
  16. £400.00?! Think the decimal point's in the wrong place...
  17. Thanks David.
  18. Two questions here: - is this Chondrostereum? - if so is it a surprise to see it on a Eucalyptus? I guess it was being saprophytic on the near dead tree, probably not the primary cause of death. Thanks, Jon
  19. There's Brinsbury at Adversane on the A29.
  20. 'Tis a small place - with fields around it.
  21. Don't people light small bonfires under cold engines any more then?!
  22. Ugh - you West Surreyites... the gent means Smallfield, nr Gatwick.
  23. Is there anything distinctive about the van - coloured panels, obvious damage etc? I'm in and out of Sussex regularly, i.e. tomorrow, as well as up and down the M23. Will there be marks left from the removal of the logos? The above would all be things to look out for beyond 'green Transit'. Good luck with the hunt: I doubt it will take long. Jon
  24. There's also some sneaky software input at play that may be worth remembering if you're trying to talk up the yellowness of a timber: the pics were taken with my son's phone and it enriched the yellow colour in response to the red trousers. There was a pic taken without the trousers and the yellow was considerably paler. That all said the wood is a rich deep yellow - for now.
