  1. Did you see crime watch? Their nasty bastards. My old mate Marcus told me "Never get out your gun unless your going to kill everyone in the room"
  2. You gotta be carefull waving guns about. I was working in Central America in 1999 and we had a run of break ins. My neighbour was a german expat and very publicly started shooting coconuts so everyone new he had a pistol. He got broke into soon after and they just kicked his door in and shot him in the legs. We were a little more low key so they just drugged the dogs and took the motor bike.
  3. I also looked at a walnut today, client doesn't want to go to hassel of extracting the stump though. What we do is cut out the unions in large blocks for turning, take straight pieces out in pieces minimum of 3ft legnths for short planks and save a load of the smaller pieces that could be used for handles etc. I recon you could salvage up to £100 worth from test crickets' tree. We chuck the lot to one side in the yard and sell it to the guy who deals with the wood turner 2s 2 or 3 times a year and split the cash between the lads
  4. 30 mile radius for tree surgery, 50 miles for consultancy and worldwide for canopy/specialist work but thats only once or twice a year if I'm lucky.
  5. I got £80 from the wood turners for a load of dead rings. They wood have paid top dollar for the stuff we chipped though
  6. Has there been some recent disturbance in the rooting area? Ash really suffer when levels change or soils are compacted.
  7. Your right about home study. I started an FdSc online when I had 6 years experience on the tools under my belt. I wouldn't rights off an FdSc or BSc as a slip of paper as I doubt you appreciate the work that goes into getting such a qualification, unless that is you have one. Short courses such as PTI and QTRA are great, but I expect to charge myself out at a higher rate than someone with just these short course qualifications This is to reflect the fact that I have an achedemic award which has forced my to look at a wide range of subject areas. As for money, I am not a rich man but I can assure you I do alot better than before I went back into studying. How usefull is a degree is in this industry if not backed up with experience I don't know. But in my opinion a degree type qualification backed up with plenty of hands on experience is a very usefull combination and if you can deal with the home study is 3 years you will not regret.
  8. I would disagree. I did an FdSc and it was the best thing I've done. I regulary turn away consultancy work (mainly 5837's) as I just can't cope with the current work load. If you can stick the home study its well worth the effort.
  9. Yeah, tipper with a tool box. Link road drag race!
  10. I was about to say the same thing. No problems with mine, yet.
  11. I just had mine changed. I think it was about £80 labour and £20 parts at the local garage
  12. California Senegal Costa Rica Panama Romania
  13. Just a few miles out of Exeter
  14. I recently posted a request for part time workers. I now need someone full time payee to start week begining 28th september due to spiralling workload. Minimum of cs 38, more experience the better. We carry out a wide variety of work for Domestic customers, LA's, National Trust, many large estates and private collections of trees. We can offer training and the opportunity to get experience regularly working on big trees, crane work etc. Also the occainsonal opportunity to work overseas may arise. Please pm or call Mat 07968741251 (Daytime Monday-Saturday )
  15. Are you still looking for work? If so give me a call on 07968741251 I can line up a few days next week. Mat.

  16. Just a thorough mallet thump and climbing inspection. A friend of mine inspected the tree as a second opinion. The 1st report reccomended felling. It wasn't that much fun pruning it. Almost every branch got hung up and I'm not as gibbon like as I once was. Trying to envisage the final form and pruning every other branch was a bit tricky, but I hope one of my other guys will finish it next winter.
  17. A branch close to 1m diameter was removed at around 5m. A few other smaller limbs were also removed and there is some coalescents (is that how you spell it) of the decay column
  18. Crowlopping is what caused the problem in the first place
  19. Phellinus robustus within the wound and a bit of tree chicken thats just come out. I suspect there are other agents at play too. I will get a shot if I remeber next week
