  1. never tried footlocking and hate throwbagging on a line. i like to see what my rope is round.
  2. 100ton railway wagons, there are 19 on the train. it was approx 30 ton we had to get out the first 5. i sit level with the top of the wagon, so i can see my grab going in so i have a banksman on the gantry guiding me up and down, with my wireless headsets. there are baffle plates in the wagon and it is only a meter wide so its pretty tight. but getting the hang of it now, but there isnt much room for working. a few feet hire wouldnt go a miss, i have a camera on the back of the tractor for chipping so i am going to move it onto the jib so i can see better. dont know what kind of coal it is angus, but i will ask.
  3. hi there guys, i managed to get a contract emptying overloaded coal wagons with my roofmount and clamshell. so they have just called me, 5 wagons overloaded approx 60 ton. i will try and get some pics. heaters on, and no sawdust down ma trousers. catch you later. stevie:001_smile:
  4. i saw a tree today that had been cabled up and supported(badly) the woman told me how this was her favourite tree and she loved it so much, i guessed it would cost about 500 quid to thin it out and cable it properly. guess what is getting felled, logged and replanted. for half the price plus 2 tons of firewood for the lovely lady. it all must come down to the customer, hence all the pollards up here.
  5. i offered to rip all that out with my roofmount, did they get another roofmount in, they thought i was to expensive. or should i say the other guy was working for less,
  6. i saw a small bird gathering fur off a roe deere 2 weeks ago, look out for early drunk bumble bees. poor little fellas
  7. i love how they call it 'fly' tipping. not very sneaky
  8. what does this cost, if you were to take a day with 2 guys, including all the bracing?
  9. tractor work in cathcart. but it didnt come to anything. its not my thing the railway, especially when the trains are still running.
  10. hi mat, looked at job today. it was a 100 foot sequioa now 50 feet.

the folk are minted, range rover sport and porche in the log shed. 3 great danes running wild. have priced and i am waiting to hear back, could be potential to a weeks work.

so that one i owe you buddy. keep you posted. stevie

  11. is it not just better to take weight off the limb, i got called out years ago to take down a big double stem lebanon that had been braced. the right hand stem had broke at the base and was held up by the cable. it was well dodgy. when i came back the next day to tackle it with my trusty hacksaw and spare pants, luckily the cable had snapped overnight and it was down. phew said me. now that tree did get another 30 years. but would it not of been better to take it down 30 years ago and plant a new one, and it would be a good size now. i think too much tree work is done for the now, i was always taught you planted a tree for your grandkids. but i know it all comes down to pound notes and pleasing the customer
  12. they started off 10 years ago as scottish lumberjax, they were 3 pals. they then tied in with another guy about 5 years(approx)and changed there name. one of the original guys left and went out by himself. i met a few of the lads last month while looking at work for them and they seemed sound and enjoyed working for the company. by the looks of the directors cars in the car park they seem to be doing ok.
  13. sorry, i know what it is but i just dont see the point. if something needs braced, arent you just prolonging the inevitable?
  14. real men use ladders arbtalk
  15. thats good advice from graham mate, dont let my posts put you off, this is a fantastic ocupation to get into and you have a head start already with your gardening experience.best of luck
  16. ARBTALK- lopem, topem or dropem it works for me:001_tongue:
  17. i dont get cable bracing!
  18. i am pricing for an insurance job just now, trees on a sandstone rock face have loosened rocks that have fallen down and wrecked a double garage. i have to remove all the growth so it can be pinned and netted.
  19. most of the dead wood i am finding are beech, elmand pine. so it is looking pretty similar. i nearly stopped the van today at the side of the road when i saw some on a blown beech, then i thought to myself get a life. lol
  20. throwbag on a climbing line!! you know who we are, who this?
  21. hey mate, i like you. you say whats on your mind, you dont resite things off other web pages or wikipidia trying to make yourself sound impressive. i know what you mean. keep it coming. get it off your chest here and you wont fall out with the mrs as much, i dont anymore because i have been on here for 6 weeks non stop:001_tt1:
  22. thats fine and good on you, but what are you going to do if folk wont pay the money. will you reduce your rates? i have. i am on your side here, i think that what we do is amazing.
  23. never done tree work without insurance, if my boss had homers he would say i could do them for him if we finished early and it would be an extra on the way home. If i got the chance of other work i would say to my boss and he would let me use his kit and insurance and i gave him a cut. but i didnt start myself until i was confident there was no tree i couldnt cut down. i always wanted to work so my bosses loved it, i used to make them loads, but i probably cost them loads as well some days. start as you mean to go on i say.
  24. i think we need to remember we are just tree cutters, although we have amazing kit and all the new climbing techniques. there are still guys out there that stick ladders against trees in wellies and get the job done, i am not condoning them but its fact. how mant tree surgeons were there in the country 10 years ago compared to now. in the last 5 years you could demand whatever you wanted in this game, but times have changed. its not just us its all the trades, i met a guy who chucked his climbing job. he was full time in charge of a squad. 28 and was taking home 400 a week. he got a job driving a 360 on a site. he was taking home 800 a week before over time. and had never sat in a machine in his life. guess who isnt working now.
  25. my mates got the wee carlton one, it is as sharp as a razor and he is good on it, tackle anything big or small. and you can get it in anywhere, you can feel everything thru the handlebars. i have seen guys with monster remote control ones that are useless. its all in the operator.
