  1. Fantastic, would make a nice restoration project.
  2. Great stuff, is the green truck in the background a old matador?
  3. The easy way, a small quantity of dry softwood eg a broken up old pallet. personally I also like to use a small amount of finely chopped kindling that has previusly been soaked in a saltpeter solution and allowed to dry. I gaurantee that I can get almost any wood burning fiercly within 30 mins. Oh a petrol leaf blower allows things to get going farr quicker by acting as a bellow.
  4. Getting hit by a inept non concentrating female driver on a correctly conned and traffic lighted job, thankfully I was thrown onto the Verge and was mearly bruised.
  5. How many of us havent on a few ocasions used a saw without PPE anyway?
  6. Well the guys either totally incompetent and somehow led a charmed life for the last 50 years having never learnt how to fell a tree. Or An elderly and experienced forester with 50 years of time proven timber cutting skills using old equipment and methods and from an age when PPE wasn't worn. Yet still doing a good safe job. Ill go with the latter.
  7. Yes the tree turned as it fell and landed slightly to the right of the winch but at the end of the day there was nothing for it to harm. If there were buildings near or similar then I guess the bloke would have done things differently.
  8. As I say, Ive seen it used before. These days with the focus on professional aproved training we get taught by standard practices hence other methods successfully used in the past get forgotten or frowned upon. Ive always cut the mouth first, never a back cut and in honesty doubt I would risk the back cut first method but this is due to how i was trained. I certainly wouldnt condem it off hand.
  9. Thanks Andy. I'm seriously toying with the quad bike and trailer route and selling my transit. Ill still have the pickup and trailer for anything further afield but being as most of the work usually within five miles of home id be able to make a good saving on the insurance and running costs plus the speed of being able to get the kit right out to the job.
  10. I had one, Never liked it though as it was replacing a 372 that Id been using daily for 3 years and got accustomed too. In honesty I like 70cc saws for my day to day work, ideal power and weight for the work I do. Current power horses are a 441 and 575.
  11. Andy, what is the fuel economy and insurance like for the quad?
  12. Great vids, Nice to see old kit still working as it was made for and most importantly making money. Tidy felling, Ive seen reverse cutting done before by another old boy woodsman, as has been said it actually gives more control when winching.
  13. I would have walked away, Done it before on jobs were the customer has had totally unrealistic interpretations. Ill do most things If I think I can make a semi decent job out of a bad one, but total butchery, no thanks.
  14. Learn the blue book questions and the correct answers. Practice your sharpening so youve got a tequniuqe that works. I tend to sharpen free hand but when I started found a roller gaudge helpfull.
  15. Does anyone have any experience of working for this development management company? Ive been asked to quote for the groundsmaintance of a large housing complex managed by Solitaire Property Management and would be glad of an insight as to what they are like eg prompt payers etc? A goggle search would suggest that from a residents point of view there are 'issues' with solitaire so as a contractor I don't want to get burnt fingers. Then again it maintains hundreds of property's so the residents comments I found may be isolated. Feel free to PM me if you wish. Thanks.
  16. I had a bloke ring up two weeks ago claiming to work for the police and be making a calendar to be displayed at police stations. When I called him a scamming git and told him to go fourth and multiply he said some very unn policeman like things and hung up!!!!! lol:sneaky2:
  17. Only problem I can see is the poor cuts from the shear, soil damage and compaction the 360. Nothing wrong with burning in a rural area if done sensibly. I was surprised by a pic posted on here recently of clearance of woods to create a vista were the brush had been chipped, why? burn it and save hastle and derv.
  18. Lock smith will be a lot more than £17. A trailer spares place should have a lock body in stock. Easy to change, A big screwdriver hammered in to the lock and turned with mole grips to open then wedge the handle in the up position and drive out the hidden pin with a drift. Screw latch catch from old lock and screw to lock body and assemble back together, drive in new pin. Once you've done this once you'll realize the value of never relying on the non existent security these locks provide. 10 min job maximum.
  19. I tend to stick a small bar on and use for limbing up for a couple of tanks. after that normal use.
  20. I paid £1200 inc vat 18 months ago for my pro 51k. If you want the bigger cut have a look at the pro 53. I looked at one at saltex and was seriously impressed.
  21. I use an etesia pro 51K. Expensive but does the job even in pouring rain. Only down side is the height of cut lever tends to break at the spring cost of £10, simple job to change: wheel off, undo two nuts. That is the only fault to a bomb proof mower, the Kawasaki engine is excellent as well.
  22. Ive done similar as an employee messing about, also some fairly stupid stuff when we werent messing about lol. Got to say though i wouldnt find it funny if I was the employer, the kid was asking for a dunking in the hawthorn though lol, could see it coming a mile off soon as I started watching!!!.
  23. Isuzu trooper with Ifor williams P6e trailer ford mondeo as back up lol. Used to fold down the seats, pole saw in diagonally, saws etc all jamned in. The trailer had side extensions and a home made ladder rack and Id load it up with well over a ton, loaded in then mashed up with a saw then racheted down lol. That was until the whole axle asembly snaped off and parted company at 40 mph and I upgraded lol!! i sold the trailer for exactly what I paid for it. These days I have a ford transit mk6, nissan navara and a Ifor LM trailer.
  24. I recently bought a 441, Cant fault it nice balance good fuel economy and no real noticable vibes. If only they could do similar with the 660!!
  25. All this forgets one thing: I wonder if the Crane driver would be prepared to operate without a full closure, I doubt it. Personally I wouldn't want the risk it, only takes one uptight local to get on a high horse and phone the council and your in trouble. Ill admit Ive done one or two unofficial Sunday cone out jobs but still maintaining a lane... total closure never.
