  1. Agreed. Unless someone says different I do think star delta is the way forward. There has been a few on ebay that look ok but I am not that sure of the spec I need so some help in this department would be very much appreciated. Suggestions on any other places a suitable starter might be hiding would also be good.
  2. Hi, I have bought a tidy 3 phase motor, hydraulic pump with a good sized reservoir with a view to seeing if it will power a log splitter instead of running a tractor. The unit allegedly came off an industrial paper guillotine and I can understand the rework I need to do to the hydraulic circuits but have no idea about 3 phase so need some advice... The motor is 415v 5hp 7.9 amp. The plate on the motor gives two wiring diagrams for the starter; Star Delta and Direct On Line. I have had a look at star delta control panels and can understand how and why they are the preferred option but they are silly money new (especially just to see if it will work). The people I have talked to all say go for Star Delta (but based on experience of much bigger motors). Any thoughts? Anybody got a second hand one?
  3. Signed off this morning.
  4. Then could I add a very big thankyou to Kev. I can't remember the last time I won anything in a raffle so it is a very welcome surprise.
  5. Thanks to Arbtalk and FR Jones for the raffle prize. A lovely surprise awaiting our return this evening.
  6. Just a thought.... I plod on growing ash, alder and oak from seed but wondered if I could just poke a cutting into the ground as per willow. Anyone with any experience / info or is it just a daft question?
  7. They ate mine so it might not be a universal truth. On our patch, the only tree that survives their attention is Alder.
  8. Adam, I run a small 10 ton splitter on a 135 hydraulics and that does all but the very knotty stuff with ease but cycle times can be a bit slow.... but then I came across a hydraulic pump and if I use that on the PTO then the performance of the splitter is markedly improved in both power and cycle times. If the 35's hydraulics are a bit tired then this would be a good way forward for you. We also have a big RIKO 22 tonne splitter. This has its own pump built in and is connected to the tractor by a pto shaft. This splits massive trunks into metre lengths with ease. Alot more expensive than the other set up but both options are cheaper than buying a new tractor just for splitting!

    log theft

A set of upturned diamond harrows can quickly ruin the cunning plans of those who are driving where they shouldn't be. Allegedly.
  10. And me. The new build super insulated homes are a stark wake up call as to how you can really reduce your bills.
  11. I price by the cube but sell in whatever quantity they want; nets, bags, tonne bags, trailer loads.... etc etc but I show them at the door how the price is calculated. For some it educates, for others I still get into "discussions" of who's trailer load is the cheapest.
  12. I did two 3 month stints - loved it. Great place and great people.
  13. Or barn roof perlins?
  14. My understanding is that you would owe to the vendor 50% of the difference between what you paid and the marketable value of THE LAND if planning permissions were to be obtained within 25 years. So using the same example, if you got planning for a £250k house then the plot value would rise from the £25k you paid to (say) £75k so you would owe them 50% of the difference which is £25k. Not the end of the world for a dream home?
  15. £1000 will buy me 40 years worth of entry in our local village website directory Hesketh Bank and Tarleton Local Directory - Local Business, Local Services and Local Facilities This is on 24 x 7 and can't be put in the recycling. If you have similar I would strongly suggest you try the same and record the results.
  16. A local nursery man asked me to see if I could use his trolleys to pack logs on. He collects in a van with a tail lift but a pump truck can be hard work with pallets yet trolleys just roll on and off. We thought about stacking the logs and pallet wrapping but then came up with this quick & simple solution which worked a treat for both of us:
  17. Lots of new customers out there as well as lots of new have a go Harrys. The new customers are finding out the hard way about what a tonne bag of wet conny looks like and the have a go Harrys are also finding that it isn't the easy money game they thought it was although as one drops out another will always take their place so get used to it. Play the long game and be philosophical about it. Customers have a choice and as long as your product is consistent then they will know exactly what they will get if they buy from you. After that it is their choice.
  18. You really never know what you might learn when you log on to Arbtalk!
  19. Did the father ever get around to explaining the rude and offensive stance taken by his little angel? I turned off the radio before it got damaged.
  20. My bill for policing goes up every year well beyond inflation whilst our service has been decimated and the crime rate soars as we have become such an easy touch. Trying to get a crime number is like pulling teeth as they just don't want it on the stats. I am sure no one is really blaming individual officers but, around here at least, there is very good reason and justification for criticism; the rural community is paying handsomely for services to be maintained in urban areas only. Not good enough. I certainly don't feel obliged to cut them any slack when they agree that crimes have been committed but refuse to log them. How does this help either party?
  21. A friend who I thought would be at the front of the marching didn't go on strike. When I asked her why not her answer opened up quite a different dimension to my thinking... She didn't go on strike because as an Auxy worker in a hospital she is about as low paid as you can get in the NHS so her thinking was that +10% to her pension or - 10% to her pension actually made bugger all difference... what she was in fact being asked to strike for was for the pensions of all the management layers at the top of the tree. And that didn't sit to well with her.
  22. How long is the contract? Is there an exit charge? The last thing you want is to build up an internet presence and then have someone hold you to ransom. Make sure YOU own the domain and (if possible) the site code. Paying google direct is not difficult but be aware that adwords is often used to paper over the shortcomings of a poor web design. But.... if it is your own property and it generates work then maybe it is right for you.
  23. This cheered up my morning. It is doing the rounds so apologies if it has been posted before but it did make me laugh:
  24. Unless you know the present landowner is an idiot, don't treat him like one. First... decide what it is worth to you. Second... get valuations. Compare the valuations with what you decided it was worth to you. If the valuation is higher than what it is worth to you then you have a problem. If it is lower, start negotiations. One thing is for sure, it will not be £3000.
  25. Add a bit on to cover a number plate for the trailer before you get nicked
