  1. How is it that the F.C. used to be the only department in the government that used to make money for the government, and keep the forests for the nation, can no longer do this ! I can not believe that the F.C. is no longer viable, and that it needs to be sold off for short term gain:cursing:
  2. Try the stevedore or cats paw knot. These were designed to secure heavy cargo whilst being unloaded out of boats. They had to be quick to tie, and easy to undo even after holding heavy loads.
  3. I have still got 160m3 of poplar that i am trying to shift. It is straight grained, and i have some photo's if you are interested
  4. With each stump cut an inch thich disk off the top of each one. Use a drill or chainsaw to cut a hole/grove in each stump. Fill the hole/ grove with the glyphosate mix, and nail the disk back onto the stump. Now you do not have to worry about the public coming into contact with the glyphosate, and therefore no signs.
  5. We had for a couple of years a couple of grass snakes living in the compost heap, every time we went to put stuff on the heap one or both would hiss loudly. Made me jump out of my skin the first time it happened.
  6. I am reasonably sure that those brown blobs are quite common in elm, and i have never got around to finding out what they are. Sorry that i could not have been any vaguer
  7. Don't tempt me,i would love to re-build an old Bedford. My kids would love the spy hole in the top of the cab
  8. Hawthorn dense nature makes it good for mallets heads
  9. The other advantage of the humbolt cut is when the trunck are skidded/ skylined up the hill, the downward facing slope of the stump reduces the chances of the trunk snagging on the way up.
  10. £100 is about what people are prepared to spend, which is why i am doing about 2 or 3 a week at the moment. Once you get your eye in so to speak you can knock them out in a couple of hours. Remember i am only doing the simple ones.
  11. They are my local shop, well hour and a half in a landrover, and nothing is too much trouble, so if they run the training as well as the shop, you will be well looked after.
  12. I can not compete with the big boys when it come to large scale developments, as i can not afford the software, and generally their complcated nature makes my head hurt. However for smaller scale development i charge £100 and use the maps that the architect have already drawn up. If the development is then given the green light, i charge an additional £50 to mark up the RPA's etc, and for a couple of site visits when i am passing to make sure that the naughty builder is not abusing the agreed terms.
  13. People that i used to work with, used chip shop oil in their saws, that made the back of their waggon smelll like a chip shop on a hot day. Nice !
  14. I have got our tree warden AGM tomorrow, i will see if i can find anymore about it, and hopfully a photo or two.
  15. I like the token guarding, that guards nothing !
  16. Below 20%, 10-15% is better, but to achieve that you will need to have stored under cover, unless you are very lucky. Which moisture meter did you go for, and how much ?
  17. I saw the post, and thought that it was 200 tons of timber for sale, the first couple of post confused me even more til i realised what was being offered. It has been a long day.
  18. [quote name= did hear ages ago the most different grafts on one tree is over 100.![/quote] One of the tree warden networks (and i can not remember which one) found an apple tree with 450 different apple varieties bud grafted onto the original tree. It had taken the man 40 years to do this, and he is still adding new varieties as the tree grows
  19. I find that a long straw is most usefull in these situations, complete with a small pump that attaches to the mug. Thus minimising the amount of sucking required once above 50'
  20. That metal tree in the background is going to need a special type of chainsaw to prune it !!
  21. Might be worth contacting your local tree warden network/ancient tree hunt about that tiny Walnut, to make sure that they know about it. Nice tree by the way
  22. We sure can Blakes 7, providing you do not mind a stinky landrover with a top speed of 55mph !
