  1. I can not argue with that. One thing i forgot to mention was that if you don't want to strip the top soil, is making sure that you sow species such as Yellow rattle that are grass parasites which help to slow the grass down. Or the other way is to mow in late August and remove all the cut grass as this will help break the cycle of nutrient repalcement. If the councils did this then they would have mow the verges alot less and save a fair bit of money.

  3. The only reason i sugest to remove the fertile top soil is for the long term picture. As a general rule most native flowering plants that are found in grassland do not do well in the long term as they can not compete with the more aggressive grasses. Remove the nutrient rich top soil and the flowers and the grasses can compete on a level playing field.

  6. If you want wild flower you will have to remove the fertile top soil, as they won't be able to compete with that very healthy grass. You definitely need an orchard on there, and a few pigs.
  7. Just finnished 'the boy with the cuckoo clock heart', and i can not decide wether i like it or not. Very odd
  8. If they are not prepared to pay for the work, then let some other fool kill themselves for peanuts.
  9. Getting back on track ladies. Rule of thumb: Is the house on clay soil, most but not all problems are caused by clay soils srinking and expanding. Trees near by will increase this because of there uptake of water. The foundations from most modern houses are deep and solid enough not to effected by tree roots. The tips of tree rrots a fragile things. Therefore are not strong enough to push through soild foundations. However with older houses (80 years plus) the foundations tend to be not too solid and therefore have gaps which can allow root entry. Once roots gain entry they can excert forces up to 5 tons. Therefore if the house is modern and not on clay soils then there is an unlikely chance theat the tree is causing subsidence. However i am not a qualified engineer, if in doubt seek out an expert.

  16. If you haven't got access to a saw mill, then the easiest way is to split down the middle with a splitting maul, and use a chainsaw or jig saw to rough out the shape. It will require a bit more work on the lathe.
