  1. I should elaborate. It’s a brilliant harness, but the nasty cheapo buckles let it down.
  2. Jesus Stubby, I don’t know what to say mate. Fingers crossed for the 40% is all I can offer.
  3. Spot on mate. The quote is the only chance you get to make money. Take whatever time it takes to get it right. Timber staying? - what size, where? Lawn? - Do you want it immaculate afterwards? Stump? What height? Just below ground level? Fine, stump grinding is extra. Etc. etc. Discuss the variables. State your payment terms. Domestic, mine are bank transfer on receipt of invoice, which will be on completion. 14 days? Bollocks. That’s just giving chancers 14 days before they start messing. Don’t like it? Get someone else. As Mark says, communicate, communicate, communicate!
  4. That’s a great answer Mark, and I will nick it if you don’t mind. I’ll have to adapt it a bit, like. I’m only 20.
  5. I’m having that mate, it’s golden.
  6. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve got some outstanding relationships with rich clients, and they’re good as gold. I love working for them. Some I don’t even quote, just do the work, invoice them and they pay. Some people I just can’t work for. That oaf in my last post started barking on about ‘knowing the value of tree work’ and ‘I never pay full price for anything’ before I’d even got out of the truck. The problem is some rich people have surrounded themselves with sycophants and yes men, and can’t bear to hear the truth. My old boss had a client who wanted a mature chestnut reduced (halved), but didn’t want it to grow back, ever, but still remain healthy. The bloke didn’t like it when a scruffy little northerner (me) told him it wasn’t happening, at any price. The trick is spotting them at quote stage, then leaving.
  7. Valuing them is easy Jack. Simply work out how many pickup loads of logs you can get out of it, then multiply by £50. Job's a good 'un!
  8. I quoted a multi-millionaire landowner £400 to clear a windblown oak once. Spec was to chip the brash and leave the timber in moveable bits. A short day for 2 of us about 10 years ago. He was a proper knob as soon as I turned up. He came straight out with 'Why should I pay £400 for unskilled work?' I asked if he could do it himself, and he said he couldn't. I said that that must make him even less than unskilled? He literally turned purple. Didn't get the job, obviously, but that was worth far more than £400.
  9. What a vile shitbag. 'Grime star' is the giveaway. He should get life anyway just for going to court dressed like that. Clearly zero respect or understanding of any basic human moral code.
  10. Great stuff Tom. Good to see all that practice ramming conny tops back into hedges paying off!
  11. Go for it Shane! What have you got to lose?
  12. Has anyone used one yet? Looks like it might be handy for situations where a lot of tension in the line would be handy, like tip tying. Definitely no GRCS, but it’s not claiming to be.
  13. I need one of those. I've got a 30' cherry to do tomorrow.
  14. Worth giving Dogtag a shout mate, but it won't be cheap, and I think they load the excess a bit for manual work. www.dogtag.co.uk
  15. @bigtreedon has experience in this I believe.
  16. Welcome mate. You’ll fit in perfectly.
  17. I've always thought that this would be quite a cool job, and will certainly test a climbers ability. I've always enjoyed the random retrieval jobs I've done, drones, kites etc. I'm not in a position to apply, but good luck with your search.
  18. More than enough for this lifetime, I can assure you.....
  19. Hi Jenni, Please let us know the eventual outcome. Not an easy situation to resolve, for sure.
  20. I thought that mate, but look again. It’s just the colour change throwing the old eyeballs.
  21. That’s true Ben. It looks like an Amsterdam whore after a stag party festival.
