  1. The tree at the front with ‘the canopy covering the road’? It barely covers the verge. Does your surveyor understand the Plasticity Index of clay soils? Does he/she even understand heave? Say an oak drinks 150,000 litres of water a year. Whether you knock the tree over in a oner, or over 5 years, the soil (if it’s clay with the necessary PI) will still expand the same amount that adding 150,000 litres of water will cause it to. You could possibly slow heave, you couldn’t stop it. Lastly, I think ‘lovely house’ is pushing it, but I’m a snob.
  2. With you now mate.
  3. The insurance provider will always blame the trees, and come up with as much shite as the surveyor has done. MB, Mick and Mark J are spot on.
  4. Some thought going into that mate. Nice one.
  5. JDon if my answer seems a bit cryptic I’ve just tagged a senior member in here who will have way more to offer than I can. Hopefully he and others will chip in soon. Good luck with it, it’s nice to see your budget reflects the fact that you don’t expect to get into the game with a £30 lid and an ebay saw. Welcome to Arbtalk.
  6. @spuddog0507
  7. My memory isn’t what it was mate….
  8. Drink. I’m more relaxed when I’ve had a few.
  9. Same mate. Rural background stood me in good stead as well.
  10. We all used to manage somehow though Beau! I agree with the sentiment though. Looking back I was a complete liability.
  11. Must be fun round your gaff at Christmas Jack.
  12. I’ve got some completely dark steps up to the back of my workshop that I’ve nearly set my arse on a few times. I took your advice Kev and bought a cheapo PIR solar light from Screwfix for £23.99. Bingo! I can now see where I’m going. Fair play to these little Chinese kids, they’ve sorted me right out!
  13. Cut its horns off, wipe its arse, and walk it past the fire!
  14. I wouldn’t ever slate 2-rope working when it’s comfier, faster, safer, or more appropriate on some jobs. I will say it’s a total crock of shit on a lot of jobs, though, and I will simply never use it on those. Single stem connies? Chogging a pole? Where are your 2 separate anchors? It’s unnecessary clutter. Unnecessary clutter is dangerous.
  15. I’m not an idiot. I only climb trees that I’ve dismantled using a MEWP (as per industry best practice). I always use two MEWPS, though, because it’s safer?
  16. Really quiet thread this. I was hoping for a few more bites from H&S Nazis before I revealed that I now climb on 3 lines at all times now (+ lanyard for cutting, obvs). 3 is safer than 2, right? Especially on single stem connies, gotta spread that load! I get to charge the customer a lot more as well, which is nice.
  17. Neither.
  18. Here’s the factory settings if you have the necessary ‘D’ headed tuning screwdriver.
  19. I am using the clip, but it will be tight with PI. No problems at all with the attachment, it’s never come off. My lanyard is only 5m, so it’s a pretty minimalist set up.
  20. I’ve got one Rob, and am getting on pretty well with it. 10mm lanyard though, don’t know what it would be like with a chunky one.
  21. Fair do’s Ben, good result.
  22. Just cross your fingers and pray. Remove as many targets as possible. As MB says, the wind will get into it now and expose other limbs to stresses they haven’t experienced before. No consultant in his right mind would put a ‘SAFE’ stamp on that, don’t waste your money. Many would suggest a 3m crown reduction, which as PB has suggested would look shite. Cedars don’t reduce well, they lose the classic cedar look. Anyone suggesting a reduction should put up pics of meaningfully reduced cedars they have done that still look like cedars, rather than fake Christmas trees, and what they looked like after 5 years. Real shame, because it’s still a nice tree.
  23. Just crack on with small claims mate, no one will be interested in his bullshit, he’s just a chancer.
  24. You don’t actually require Public Liability, just Employers if you have anyone working for you. You’d be mad not to have it though. As Ben says, your best starting asset is a thorough knowledge of the business.
  25. He’s talking about one-handing a rear handled saw Pete.
