  1. I hate hedge cutting. Just using this thread to vent my hedge-ist feelings. Hope I haven't missed the point:001_smile:
  2. It seems to me that if you made a decision to go down the H&S road, a good way to tackle it would be to go for Arb Assoc approval. This has been made a bit easier and cheaper for small companies with the new honed down version, and ticks all the H&S boxes that are required. You get something out of it this way with the logo in your advert.
  3. I tend to be up till about 1.30am then up with the larks....it''s an age thing. If I make posts on AT after about 11.30 it can get me in serious trouble with the boss:001_smile:
  4. My guess is that the direction of travel will whip off the bit of dangly chrome exposing soft steel, so not self deburring. I think the bit of wood is skyhucks weapon of choice. Thanks for the reply Treequip I never thought of that and it will be quicker as I always wear gloves when sharpening due to loads of skinned knuckles. How many r's are there in deburr /deburing by the way?
  5. J'aime bien les français:001_smile:
  6. I have yet another emigration application in at the moment. I'd love to be around someone with an enquiring mind like you. Better than some of the meatheads I've worked with over the years. They seem afraid to admit that they have a brain, because it ain't 'ard. Imagine the debates we could have:biggrin:
  7. When you think about it Mr Wisewood I bet you've done your five strokes with a file and can't see a straight edge. Brush your file over the top and bingo ... there it is. Loads of chain saved by not keeping on filing, and just a quick debur. I have a question for Treequip though. What's your preferred method of deburing, and should we be doing the sides? which I don't do at the moment.
  8. When you file something there are sometimes bits left on the thing you are filing still attached. Deburing is running something along the edge of the thing you've just filed in order to get a clean edge with no bits hanging on by a hair. you can do this with your file, which is what I do just brushing it over the top to get rid of any straggly bits. If you don't do this, the chrome layer on top of the steel tooth could be ripped off a bit in places leaving the softer steel beneath exposed. Hope it's clear now:001_smile:
  9. It was the debate between treequip, difflock and agg221 , that made things clear to me. Hopefully they will come forward and explain. If not I might have a go myself but will need to read the thread again. I am usually too lazy. Boils down to: Not deburing risks the chrome flaking off leaving softer steel underneath as your cutting edge.
  10. The main thing I've learned from this thread is the importance of deburing the chrome edge when hand filing. I started doing this a bit more as a result of something skyhuck said a while ago and noticed my chain staying sharper longer. Now I understand why, and will debur my chrome edge when hand filing even more meticulously
  11. Here's me in Nepal being saved by garlic. I'm on the left:001_smile:
  12. This is the reason the Gurkhas use it for altitude sickness in the Himalayas, saved my arse at 6000 metres plus.
  13. I've got City and Guilds fabricator welder qual's but have forgotten all this. I've been a tree surgeon for 18 years or so and didn't know all this about chrome and steel in chains etc. I have found this thread very educational so thanks to the OP and all the posters who have put some thought into this.
  14. Ropeknight summed it up pretty good. work off to the side on your main line. Use your strop to hold you from a swing if you slip. Skyhucks avatar used to show quite a good example, on a quite steep limb. Don't think about getting back on the way out just go for it, you can always scramble back somehow.
  15. I'm pleased that you like them as I only had a few pics and always thought I couldn't capture that place. It was foggy and dark in there.
  16. I don't know mate... it was pre tree work days. It was a wondrous and magical place but I couldn't really capture it on film. A place you kinda want to bottle it and keep it.
  17. The magic fairy goblin woods in the Pyrenees and a couple from Spain. They may not be pre digital era but they are before I had a digital camera.. old and scanned.
  18. Thanks Mark. I have AT on in the background but I'm keeping my head down. I think that's the nicest thing anybody's ever said to me:001_smile:
  19. Cheers Old Mill...I guess we're back to Skyhuck's picture now:001_smile: I just can't help myself sometimes:001_smile:
  20. Just a quick acknowledgement to Steve, Skyhuck and Andy. If I have to confess to a large dose of humble pie it's nice to get the acceptance. Thanks chaps:001_smile: Edit: and old mill too...I haven't re-read the thread but I thought you conducted yourself better than me.
  21. Apologies to the OP for destroying his thread and to the whole of arbtalk for saying they are not tree surgeons or something. I’ve been playing grumpy cynical old git for a while now; it’s clearly not working. I’m glad Steve put me on the naughty step when he did. Today I was thinking about all this and wondering where all that anger is coming from. I think I have stopped enjoying the job. So today I decided to enjoy this conny bash like I used to. I am not too old to learn just yet and I don’t know everything. Large dose of humble pie, but I think a bit of a positive out of it. Last thing for the OP… I agree with Mr Lumpit … it takes a while so it helps if you have a working wife or something to cover the basic bills and things.
  22. I can live with that .. Thanks for the reply. And due respect for being the founder of the forum. Best Regards Paul Brash
  23. So now Steve and Skyhuck aren't replying. You had a right pop at me, how about some resolution to this issue....
  24. Ballanced as usual Andy. By the way my name is Paul Stuart Brash, my user name got changed to Albedo but says user formerly known as paulsbrash. Fill yer boots chaps
  25. I've always been drinking early mate, I'm better after a few red wines. It seems to offend people less:001_smile:
