  1. Maybe no trees near it now because they have fallen! Looks like an old wound. Get someone who knows what they are doing to assess it. You could ask to be present and thereby learn from their methods.
  2. Looks a bit like black fruit bodies of Ustulina (K.deusta) in the second picture. Are they crispy like cinders? If so, get it felled.
  3. I would probably start with a nylon faced mallet. Do you know how to use one?
  4. Cause? Well it might have been caused by another tree falling against it. How far the decay goes? That's a piece of string question! Looks more rotten toward the top of the wound. You could take a core here and check it out (probably the cheapest method) or you could use decay detection such as a microdrill or picus. Hope that helps.
  5. It is normal. Just confirms its lilac. If it gets too big you can cut it right back and it will come again.
  6. Agree with lilac. A shrub really. Not going to get huge. Do the flowers turn brown and persist on the shrub for some time making it look a bit shabby?
  7. [ame]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PnP2DkbHp1o[/ame]
  8. Not so lucky [ame]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9pf1uR5CroY[/ame] An undercut might have helped here
  9. I believe your NPTC certificates would be accepted in Europe but it would be worth getting in touch with Billy Robb at A1 Arborists, as he is the driving force behind the European Qualifications. He is also an NPTC assessor.
  10. That is blatant vandalism! Is this in the interest of research?
  11. Inclined to agree with this. Looks like a great system on deep mineral soils but I can see it being extremely frustrating elsewhere.
  12. Looking for Bernhard Mathews?
  13. Paul I would be interested in both elements. Some idea of the content and costs would be useful. Thanks
  14. Swann egg would be my guess (see picture below). Could be a Rhea egg but definitely too small and not round enough for an ostrich.
  15. Hmmm. Well the extra pictures don't really help a great deal but I would probably plump for field maple. That's a best guess and not a definitive ID. Best of luck with it.
  16. At a guess, I would say maple. Any more pictures? Perhaps some of the tree it came from and preferably some in focus would help.
  17. I can only begin to imagine the pain you are in. I hope you are able to stay positive and have the support you need at home. Get well soon.
  18. Hmm sorry to hear of his loss I hope he was insured. I wonder how one would go about combating this kind of theft. Seeing as they are so valuable - could you not microchip them?
  19. Oh dear. Someone has their foot caught in your rope!
  20. Sounds like you are on the right track to me.
  21. Where is the lumber?
  22. Does not seem unreasonable. Does it really?
  23. I assume the concrete is the problem. Could you bolt a square post to the concrete and extend the post and rail to it? A photo might help?
  24. Looks more like mammal damage than strip canker.
  25. It looks pretty exposed. I would probably advocate felling it.
