  1. Thanks Ewan It is a new one on me. So I look forward to trying it out.
  2. The alpine butterfly is not supposed to move under load. Perhaps you mean it is difficult to untie after loading? Its supposed to be one of the easier knots to untie! I will give your circus bowline a try and see how it fairs. Any idea why its called the circus bowline?
  3. What are the benefits of it over the alpine? Not sure I would use that over an alpine butterfly without good reason.
  4. Is that the one used for making an improvised harness i.e. it has three loops?
  5. The Pursell Prussic is a handy one. I have used it before to make a quick adjustable tether. The alpine clutch is probably too risky to adopt for commercial tree climbing but may have some use in rigging small limbs. The Zeppelin bend is a favourite of mine. Those span sets look useful. Would be good for strapping roundwood to a trailer. Thanks for sharing.
  6. The method has been around in the mountaineering world for a long time. Its a good method to use with gloved hands. As for who invented it.....like many knots I am not sure anyone is credited with the method. Your job sounds interesting. Perhaps you have some knots you can share with us that we had not thought of using?
  7. So it's down to you is it? I wondered who was to blame. Personally I use to use high street shops all the time until they closed. But then my father had a delicatessen when I was growing up and perhaps I was spoiled with quality over quantity.
  8. I understand a resurgence in small High Street shops is predicted due to the large supermarkets not being able to compete with the likes of Lidl and Aldi. I welcome this wholeheartedly. It will be good to see a proper greengrocer, fishmonger, baker etc. breathing life back into my local high street. I no longer visit our high street as it is full of betting shops, estate agents, fast food outlets and cheap stuff that I neither need or want.
  9. Just curious as to what part of the SRT system of climbing the RopeGuide features in? I thought they were for Ddrt. No?
  10. How did you manage in your first post then? Did you manage to sell the highly valuable black walnut tree?
  11. Save yourself some work and get a saw mill owner to come out and give her a bid on her highly valuable black walnut tree.
  12. Certainly looks pretty tall. Did you measure its height? Nice job by the way.
  13. Good video. Nice to see the cautious approach being taken. Those glass panels would be expensive to replace! The first big lump to come off did make me flinch a bit, but all was clearly under control. The winch looks like a nice affordable piece of kit. I am not sure I would want to trust the prussic on the winch when trying to raise heavier limbs or spars though. I also think a tether for the winch locking pin might be a good idea as I can see it getting lost.
  14. Just an observation. The karabiner in your picture is not suitable for life support in a commercial tree climbing scenario. You should be looking for karabiners with a minimum three way action on the gate. These karainers should be CE marked and rated. Many also carry independent identification numbers laser etched on their spines (excellent or traceability).
  15. I think half the trouble is that they cannot get their heads around the proper assessment and are therefore looking for rules of thumb. Do you find that the shadows cast by trees during the winter get awfully long in the north?
  16. p&d? Pete & Dud? I thought Peter had passed already.
  17. Has someone been reading the tree its last rights? If not why is there a bible and a crucifix in the third picture? Going back to the management of the first tree, I can see the arguments on both sides. However I fall firmly in the retention camp. If we cannot hang on to trees such as these where there is the space and funds available to do so, where can we? I am sure there is plenty of new panting also going on in the park. No?
  18. Interesting stuff Jules. Have you managed to get your head around the BRE and the associated charts? Its been a while since I have had to use it and I know what you mean by needing to lie down after! Do you fight on both sides depending on the client?
  19. Its all double Dutch to me!
  20. One word. HEAVE!
  21. Hello Stephen Congratulations on the new job!
  22. Ahh! almost sure! Fair enough. Interesting observations and reasoning none the less. Thank you for your insight.
  23. It looks like the decision has already been made. Did you specify any replanting? Perhaps you should insure that the council reinstates the kerb and paving right up to the root collar so that the new tree has a equal chance of survival? Or maybe put it in the grassed area behind and ensure that they ram it on a weekly basis with their ride on mowers? Call me sceptical but I think vandals are the least of your problems!
  24. Interesting. What have I missed in the picture that has enabled you to give such a definitive answer? I am always interested in learning from those with greater experience of these things.
  25. Exactly the hard work begins at the end of your video!
