  1. I did think about that but I am thinking that it would be horrible to handle.
  2. I tend to tickle it (one or two passes with the file) every 2nd or 3rd tank when cutting the mainly dry softwood & go over it at the end of the day. If I leave it much longer the chippings start to get more dust in them. Perhaps I have taken the rakers down to much, but I have used the guide to do it so dont see how I could have. The saw starts easy hot & cold, runs smooth & evenly at all revs so cant be far out can it? I am wondering if I am forcing the saw into the wood to much. On a good note I was speaking with one of my customers today when delivering their last load of the year. They said they would support a 17% price rise which would put me at a higher price than anyone else as they are happy with the wood & my service. I dont do enough to cover the cost of chopping in this saw & getting a dearer one.
  3. The stuff I am cutting is mainly 3" - 12" round but a few were about 14". The larger ones are done singly & the smaller ones in bundles. I tend to keep the saw cutting hard just under the point where its struggling to keep the revs up. The saw was new just over a year ago & is still set as it came from the dealer. How do I test the RPM? The speed & quality of the cut seems fine. In the main I am cutting the logs to 7" but 20% ish have been to 15" for a few that want bigger logs.
  4. I really dont get why the feeling is that its ok to use loads of fuel IF you charge enough to cover it. Would you all put up with a car that did 2 mpg just because your rates are so high you still made a profit? Or that your house was at 30c all year round & all the TV's lights ect were on 24/7 just cos you earn lots of money? Why should a small (45cc) chainsaw use more fuel (in £) than a 3L engine? Ok the fuel costs twice as much but the tractor was running for over twice as long.
  5. Dont you use red diesel? Petrol is now £111.58 (ex VAT) & red is £0.65p (ex VAT) Plus it has more energy per L so should last longer too. Yes you are right we dont charge enough but we do charge what our local market will stand. We are matching what other local sellers are charging. We are telling all our customers that it has got to go up for next winter. Even if the others dont raise prices we are going to. With delivery the fuel / oils are over 10% of the sales price. That seems steep to me. I do understand that for those of you doing take downs that a few quid on fuel per day is peanuts compared to the daily charge you make.
  6. I have a MS250. I am currently ringing up some softwood for splitting. So far we have done 11m3 & I have worked out how much fuel & bar oil we have used & was a little shocked. For each 1m3 bag of split wood the saw is using 1L of fuel & 400ml of bar oil (plus 20ml of 2 stroke). All oils are Sthil. I am tickling the chain every other fill but to be honest its cutting well & not needing that much doing (on hard woods I tend to do every fill). The chain is about 3/4 used of the usable section (so ignoring every thing after the guide line) & I have taken the rakers down as needed & I am getting good chips. So is my saw using to much fuel & oil? If so is it how I am using it or does it have a problem? Its actually costing less to run the tractor to power the splitter as thats using 2.27L per 1m3. With the cost of petrol rising so much will someone bring out a diesel one?
  7. As the largest cost is the duty the retailer could double the profit (profit not cost so a few pennies per L) & we would still be loads better off. Oh & yes lots of prices did fall.
  8. I hope so. Its costing me more to run my 45cc chainsaw than my 3300cc tractor per hour. Sorry just realised that not what my figures show. The saw costs more to cut up 1m3 than the tractor does to split it. Not quite the same but still shocking as the splitting takes twice as long.
  9. Buy in 12 weaned lambs every time it needs cutting & then eat the lawn mower when its finished. You can then also charge for fertilising the lawn too.
  10. I was thinking similar today whilst standing there looking at two tractors & one 4 tonne digger thinking I could sell one & get a processor lol. Trouble is the 4wd 590 does lots of other jobs as does the digger & the 165 aint worth much.
  11. We have just paid £700 plus VAT for an 18 tonner load (not 18 tonnes in weight as its already dry but the wagon was full to the brim) of softwood inc del. So about £38/tonne. Looking at about 30m3 but wont know till we finish doing it.
  12. Owch, I am monitoring my fuel consumption quite closely at the min. We have bought in a lorry load of wood & filled all the tanks (we have the 165 running the splitter, the 590 moving the full bags & the digger picking up the logs & holding them whilst they are cut on to the stack & the chain saw being filled from a 20l can). I am hoping to be able to say exactly how much fuel it takes to cut & split 1m3 of logs & so exactly how much it costs to produce. So far the 165 has hardly used much at all but its only running at 1000rpm. The pressure is fine it just the speed thats slightly slow. Not to bad when the OH is running it but I find it frustrating. The trouble with running the splitter on the 590 (4wd) is that then the 2wd 165 will have to move & stack the bags & its just not up to it.
  13. Just found it in the service manual. 28LPM for the one I have, some are 36LPM I guess fitting it to the digger would be best as that has 40-45LPM
  14. We also have the Harrows are us one. It works great but on our MF165 it is slowish but then it only has 17LPM. Keep meaning to try it on the MF590 (cant find its flow rate on http://www.tractordata.com) so dont know how much better it could be.
  15. I would say that you are right about brash but not about millable. Its not a timber felling exemption. What about firewood? That will produce double or more than millable would. Right done some digging. Now this is an old document but the newer ones will have the same definition. from legal document So that leaves no doubt its 5 cubes in total as aggregate means in total, all together, sum of ect ect.
  16. I got to ask. Do you have an official source to quote on that? All the official paperwork that I have read just says 5 cubes per quarter & you cant sell more than 2 cubes of it. Which does imply that the 5 cubes is in total & 2 cubes is sell able. So you would have to leave the wood for them even if they dont want it as they cant sell (even for no money) it. Oh & its per ownership so you cant do another 5 cubes in the same quarter on another parcel of land owned by the same entity (person, partnership, company).
  17. Can anyone ID this PTO generator? I know nothing about it so any help finding out its spec would be great.
  18. Might as well be for a million cos they aint going to pay it no matter what it is.
  19. I would guess that the cost of felling them would be more than the value of them.
  20. I dont think that "pine" & "shingle" should be in the sentence. Get some WRC. How big is the roof?
  21. I think he is saying that one way or another we HAVE to pay more money to the Gov to run this mess of a country. So you can either pay via the fuel or income taxes or NI or VAT or indirect taxes or in blood. But its still got to be paid one way or another. We had the good times & now its time to pay the piper.
  22. Perhaps because they look like they have been made using a pallet or that people see them & think "I can make that from a pallet for free" ?
  23. The ones in our Aga Little Wenlock 5kw have lasted for 3 hard winter seasons burning 24 7 as the only heat source is a static van. Still look like new. It has only ever had wood in it.
  24. Check the flow chart on page 14 linky That looks like its the same 750kg limit that all trailers have. But it is also speed & age of vehicle related. This does surprise me as there are loads of 3 tonne ish sized trailers with no brakes or just parking ones. This linky does seem to say that you can have a bigger trailer as long as you only drive (even if the tractor can go faster) at less than 20kph.
