    Shocking

not seen that before, thats got to have ragged
  2. its not a pollard though..................... Is'nt a true pollard started when a tree is young and is then cut at regular intervals. This is when huge pollard "knuckles" are formed. The oak in question, was quite mature and established. This was not pollarded but had its crown "topped out".
  3. Not happened to me personaly, but have been told by a couple of lads i work with who have hit bomb shrapnel from the blitz with chainsaws, when working on old trees.
  4. mullered for firewood . Not my cup of tea, but having lived and worked in france i know its there style. Got back from a visit recently and french tree surgery differs so much from british techniques. Theres seems to be to top everything to ladder height . There are some great old pollards over there, some of the street pollards are amazing. But in the main when i was over there about a month ago for a visit the majority of tree work i saw was sloppy and shoddy, not pollarding for the correct reasons.
  5. cheers for that pete will take it easy just hope ive got something decent at work to try it on, knowing my luck we'll be doing hedges LMAO ..............WELL OFF TO WATCH THE MATCH NOW
  6. Get on the hitchclimber red squirrel you wont regret it! Drew that sett up looks mind bending! Just when you think your getting to grips with this arb lark you see somthing like that! What sort of work scenarios would you use that sett up to give you an advantage, or is it for competition climbing??

    Cherry

uurgh. The wood isnt next to a pub by any chance LOL.
  8. Cheers for the reply lads thats what i wanted to here! (yeah it is 11mm blaze) Been working on a VT/hitchclimber for awhile so quite used to it, just not used to such fine diameter hitch. Just tied up some of the lyros and it grips sweet as! the sett up looks streamlined and neat. Cant wait to give it a go at work tommoro. How many jobs are there where you cant wait to try somthing new at work!!!
  9. Just recieved my new blaze rope. Along with this ive got some Lyros and sirrus friction cord in 8mm. Never climbed on cord with this diameter, and looking at it it seems mega thin. Is the sett up ive chose balanced/safe for use with the hitchclimber/VT sett up
  10. id be up for this any idea of location, date etc:thumbup:
  11. what makes of 10mm line are you guys using with your cinch? Is 10mm rope suitable to use as a side lanyard or am i getting this set up all wrong?
  12. any evidence of bats using that tree? Looks like its got good roosting potential as it starts to fracture.
  13. not a religeous person but i did go to a catholic school. Im sure that jesus forgave judas, so planting this tree probably represents the fact that god forgives all no matter what................................. "Thats the end of todays sunday school children" :laugh1:
  14. Id like to give the lock jack a go but at the moment love the Hitchclimber too much. But will have a look at the trade fair. Is it just me or dose anybody else get a sense of satisfaction when you tie up your VT correctly, it locks everytime and you get a good productive days work out of it. ....................I'll get me coat (lol)
  15. i agree PPE only goes part way in protecting against chainsaws. Being careful about what your doing, TAKING YOUR TIME, and not being complacent are the best PPE anyone can use. Hope your mates foot heals soon.
  16. ..................i dont think lightning was responsible, there are no burn/scortch marks on the ground and bark, id say the leader split, but i maybe wrong.....................
  17. cheers mark, the idea of them coming loose was bothering me. I like to put spikes on really tight, just gives me that bit more confidence. I hate it when spikes are set too loose and begin to slip.

    What boots

i think that 150 is a very generous allowance for boots. You should be able to get some good boots for that. I ware the elten aquafells, they're sympatex and have never let me down in wet weather. They're reasonably comfy and rigid so are ok with spikes. Not had any problems when climbing in them. Seen them for between 120 and 140. The only negative is that the outer material is wareing away. Going to get a new pair at the AA trade fair thinking of taking a look at the haix protectors, or the tibets. The bloke i work with wares stiens. Took quite a while to break in but he reakons that they are very good for climbing in.
  19. Not to me personally, but i prusume he did to the bloke who i sub for (who was also present.) At around 4 o clock some more workers turned up climbed the electric pole and un-earthed it. As i said this is the first shutdown ive done but it seemed to me that all correct procedures where followed..............
  20. Cheers for the reply rupe, was a little unsure about the velcro as ive only used standard spikes before. Think i'll give them a go as i do like the idea of the velcro being comfy.
  21. Took this lime down this week. It was situated next to electric poles so had to be earthed whilst the tree was dismantled. First power shutdown ive done so was a little uneasy. At first kept having visions that the power was going to come back on . The electric engineer remained on site so this gave me some confidence, so it was on with the job. Started at dinner and had until 4 to get the tree down, then the power was coming back on. All went to smoothly, im glad to say....................
  22. Buying some new climbing irons and have been considering buying the distel aluminium ones with the velcro fastenings. How do people rate the velcro attachments? are they prone to coming loose? Do they stay secure or do you constantly have to re do them? or dose the velcro ware away with time and use? Cheers in advance for any advice.
  23. forget gaurd dogs.....................hungry pigs are more efficient!
  24. Hedge trimming is a lot trickier and time consuming than people give credit for. Been asked to finish loads of monster hedges that wonnabe "gardners" had started but could'nt finnished. Got to admit there not my favourite job but there a necessary evil which pays the bills Price cautiously
  25. .....................Double the sling over a branch stick a krab in it and use it as a re direct on very long branch walks.......................
