  1. The branch union looked pretty ad hoc anyway, and more like a pollard or damage sprout, albeit an old one. Great pics, MonkeyD. As for the "ingress" of fungal pathogens, does anyone here, like me, subscribe to the idea that there's a level of opportunist spore in all wood just waiting for the right conditions and a wound, rather than being a "point of entry" for a fungus, is simply a point of entry for air, moisture etc which then alter the internal conditions of the timber and creates the ideal microclimate for one or other of these opportunist fungi, which is already there, to then multiples? I did quite a lot of work on this when I was doing my Master's at Bangor. There's a mycologist called Alan Rayner who's written a lot on this, and what I was looking at experimentally seemed to bear it out pretty strongly. Maybe for another thread...
  2. Lesser honey vadger? Wearing 1960s NHS spectacles? Am I close?
  3. I'm fairly sure Amenity Tree Care and Euro Tree Service are looking for staff at the moment. Both fairly near you and proper outfits. Best of luck.
  4. Bloody show off. just kidding. Shouldn't this be an olympic sport? We could get our jock brother here to kick some more international ass in the cycling.
  5. I think your idea of clubbing together with the scouts is a good one- strength in numbers and all that. What might work even better is to tell the story to the local paper "Sleazy neighbour steals land from scouts and hard-working local man" or words to that effect.
  6. I'm going to try to empty this vending machine over the weekend. Crunchy, fishy goodness..
  7. Daphiphyllum macropodum . Just about to flower for the first time, too. Woohoo!
  8. Here's a little one from out of my front garden. Planted it last year.
  9. One of a pair of singles, eh? I'm sure I saw one of these on eBay a few weeks ago but I can't remember whether the one I saw was a left hand (down) discharge, or the later right hand (down) discharge. I suppose if I could remember the colour (sage green or the darker fluorescent black metallic) I'd know straight away because as we all know, the later right hand (down) was only available in the sage green. That reminds me, I saw a left hand (down) model advertised on loot.com a few years ago and when I looked at the picture is was- you guessed it- sage green and not fluorescent black (ha ha). Now that was obviously either one that had been ridden hard and put back in its folder without proper towelling down and needed a respray (in the wrong colour!!), or it was a rare sage green left hand (up) component and the seller didn't know what he had!! I know!! I'll never know because the bloke had sold it to a retired hat blocker from Cleethorpes before I even got a look-in. Bugger. Anyway, back to bed now.
  10. The theme music is rocking my world!
  11. Hi Volvo

I notice from one of your posts that you're based down in Bordeaux. I've been considering heading over to work in France for some time (I speak french as I went to school in Quebec in Canada), but I've never really been able to fathom the french industry just by doing web searches etc.

I'd be very grateful for any tips. The Atlantic coast would suit me as a location.

  12. My weekend hobby of throwing around and then losing dozens of diamond-encrusted frisbees is costing me a fortune. I was thinking of getting into gold-plated boomerang tossing what with the credit crunch starting to bite and everything.

    Grand Designs

Yep, I saw that one but that wasn't what I meant. I meant more of a modern, low-cost, modular house which could be thrown up in no time and finished to a high standard for low cost. The modular timber construction method has got a bad name in the UK and isn't thought to be weatherproof (despite the fact that they're [erfectly fine in Canadian climates where the seasonal variance in temperature can be 60+ degrees). To be fair, if you wanted someone to build a house like the one featured in that episode for you it'd cost a fortune. It was beautiful, though.

    Grand Designs

I'd love to see a Grand Designs episode where, instead of getting hugely in debt and spend a zillion pounds on some self-indulgent pile, the couple on the show have a very limited budget and build a modular, timber frame house to a high standard in a few months an live happily ever after with a small mortgage. I guess that might not make very good telly, though. OK, to make it interesting, at some point the wife has to get found out having it off with the cameraman. Voila! Gripping TV.
  15. Thanks for posting these pictures, guys. Really interesting direct investigation of decay strategies. Cheers
  16. You're right vl2007, this is the classic Matheney and Clark form for single tree evaluations, not populations.
  17. How about Amelanchier canadensis? Snowy mespilus. Lovely small tree. Or whitebeam for the pale new leaves? Or Katsura (Cercidiphyllum japonica) for it's suffused dark pink new leaves? Like Gaynor said, the magnolias are looking mighty fine right now, try Magnolia 'Susan' for flushed pink flowers. Ooh, I love spring.
  18. Fuligo septica looking a bit worse for wear
  19. Can you imagine working for these clowns?
  20. HI Lee. Just inquiring about your resistograph. Can it be fitted with the laptop connection kit or will it only work with the paper?

    cheers

  21. I don't understand this thread. I always use a machine gun. What the hell do you lot use?
  22. I'd get onto TER with your serial and crime number ASAP just in case. It didn't save my 10' tipping IWT never being seen again, but then again I do live a little too close to Holyhead ferry port. I've heard of some happy endings due to TER. best of luck. A pox on all tool tea leaves.
  23. Has anyone heard whether or not they might need helping clean up after the winds on South-West France and Northern Spain? It all sounds pretty serious and I expect there might be months of clearing up to do. I hate to sound opportunistic, but I know plenty of lads who got set up in arb after the '87 blow here, and the people affected might be happy for the help.
  24. I can vouch for the simplicity of these machines. Ed's 4 year-old managed to fire one up and get started down the track to the shops. Can you still hire these, Ed?
  25. Hi Mdvaden.

I saw your name pop up on another forum discussing landscape design in BC so I thought I'd drop you a line. I'm an arboriculturist and landscape designer/contractor here in Wales, but I grew up in Canada and am looking to move back, if practical. Somewhere near the sea in BC is what I'm hoping for, and I wondered if you might have any contacts up north? Ideally, I'd like to work in a landscape design and build team, but am more than happy to do arb consultancy (I have an MSc in urban forestry) to supplement the more creative stuff.

If you have any suggestions, I'd be very grateful.
