  1. Hungry trees, eating walls and buildings at Angkor Wat temple complexes, Siam Reap, Cambodia, 2008 first three pics show the actions of the Strangler Fig, 2nd 2 the actions of the silk-cotton tree.
  2. "Pssst" I think the clue is in the title Pete. A place called Essex if I'm reading it right.
  3. I seem to remember a few years back whilst working at Bartletts, when Glyn Percival was their Science guru working at Reading Uni, he ran some trials on different tree species woodchip as mulch. Overall on the "mono" trials (ie: chip from a single species of tree) Hawthorn came out as the best mulch for any/all other tree species. Why...? I can't remember! But mixed woodchip is just fine, as Wildwood says though, it would be best if it was at least about 12mths old. Avoid chip with Rhodedendron and too much conifer. And as again Wildwood suggests, de-compacting the ground beforehand are wise words indeed. If you can you will get better results.
  4. Hi folks, I'm currently looking at replacing my climbing rope. I've narrowed the field to 3main contenders, all good in my opinion and I'm sure you will have your own preferences. At the moment, I'm a bit "old skool" and have always climbed on Yale XTC (red) with a Blakes hitch on Yale 0.3m spliced split tail. But in the future want a rope that will be lighter and give me the option to change to a mechanical climbing device, such as the ART Lockjack/Spiderjack, in the future. The 3 main contenders are:- New England - Tachyon Yale - Poison Hi-Ve Yale - Imori What friction cord would be most recommended for each. And if you've used or are using any of the above ropes, are you happy with your choice and did you come across any unexpected pros/cons that you had'nt anticipated? Many thanks for your help and guidance.
  5. A literal description of an Obelisk; is a 4 sided stone pillar tapering towards its pyramidal top. However, as this passage from Wickepedia show, obelisks are often "monolithic". So I would concur with Monkey-D that to obelisk a tree would be to remove its entire crown and scaffold limbs just leaving a free standing trunk thus creating a Monolith. Extract from Wicke:- "An obelisk (from Greek ὀβελίσκος - obeliskos,[1] diminutive of ὀβελός - obelos, "spit, nail, pointed pillar"[2]) is a tall, narrow, four-sided, tapering monument which ends in a pyramid-like shape at the top, said to resemble a 'petrified ray' of the sundisk. A pair of obelisks usually stood in front of a pylon. Ancient obelisks were often monolithic, whereas most modern obelisks are made of several stones and can have interior spaces."
  6. That 'aint tree sap on your car Father Brennan, its aphid poo!!!
  7. Have noticed it before, but having seen a post go online at 14:55 pm when my clock says its 13:56, I was just wondering if there is a specific reason for posts to appear to be popping up on site an hour ahead of the actual time they were posted? Is the server hosting Arbtalk on BST when we're on GMT, or is it located on the continent and therefore showing CET? Just curious! Mmmmmmm......... did'nt happen then! Post logged at time it was sent. I must be seeing things....... wish it would stop raining...... I need to get out more! Numpty!!
  8. Gobsmacking spellbinding awesomeness. If anyone missed it I would highly recommend checking it out on BBC iPlayer. Now anyone know where I can get a Toucan bill penis guard from?
  9. Erm... Not quite mate. Britain abolished slavery in 1833 not 1911 and was the first country in the world to do so. And in 1911 the British Empire already had all the dominions she would ever possess. However it was the possession of these dominions from which Britain was able to accrue much of its vast wealth at the time which meant it did'nt have to tax its own population quite as much as we have to pay today by comparison. Which is just as well as the average household income would have been less than £50 per year.
  10. Could be any one of a number of different number of wood boring insects. The holes are usually made by the larvae of beetles, no need to worry they only eat dead wood not living tissue.
  11. PM sent M8.
  12. I posted a similar query on this forum a couple of months ago regarding VAT on boots. Basically things work like this. Some suppliers may or may not quote VAT on their website prices because thats the way their sites have been designed and set up. It just makes it easier for them from the initial design phase rather have to list every VAT or non-VAT combination for each individual item where its applicable for exemptions for personal PPE. The important thing to remember is that if you are ordering an item for your own personal use, and zero VAT is applicable for that purpose, then you simply state this when ordering and the VAT should'nt be charged. If you are a company/employer that is buying PPE for yourself or anyone else then VAT is applicable and you are charged accordingly. Hope this helps to clarify the situation.
  13. Sorry lads, as Gman points out, you've missed the boat on this one. I know I did the job Dec. 2009/Jan 2010, so you're both a year late I'm afraid. But if you still fancy the idea of working in the Algarve, Portugal, Lurcherman, aka Martyn of Algarve Tree Services is still looking for a couple of climbers, who can commit to about 3 months. See his ad in this section, ref. is:- CLIMBER(S) Wanted. Algarve, Portugal From my experience I can tell you Bossman Martyn, is a bloody good bloke to work for, based just outside Lagos and the Algarve is a nice part of the world to work in. The work will be interesting and varied, and you'll get the experince and opportunity to work on some tree species you would'nt come across in the UK. But as the ad says, YOU need to email him directly! Got it! You have to be pro-active. Don't just post a quick reply on this forum bleatingly asking him to "please call me". Good luck.
  14. There is a far simpler solution. The savings required to clear the British economy's deficit is £86 billion over 5 years. Over the same period Britain will have to pay £130 billion to be a member of the EU! So we leave the EU and we clear the deficit in fail swoop and still have enough left over to give every man woman and child in the UK a cheque for £500. The added bonus is that the British government actually get to be in charge of Great Britain. Simples!
  15. Whilst bimbling around the net, stumbled across this site selling ex-MOD vehicles, including 4x4's; trucks; flatbeds; tractors etc. Looks like a few bargains, so if you're thinking about getting a new vehicle, might be worth a look! Welcome to MOD Sales Online - Military Vehicles for Sale - Ex MOD Land Rovers for Sale I'm liking the look of the Reynolds Boughton: RB 44 Truck Cab Pickup R.H.D, and thinking it would make an excellent conversion project into an Arb vehicle.

  18. Ooooh, so close, same LA borough in fact! But, ooooh so far, I don't do logs .... sorry! Have you tried Mozza? He's nearby, not sure if he does logs though, but he might know someone.
  19. Just wondering if in the current freezing weather conditions if anyone else using Stihl chainsaws ever bothers to flip the saws winter/summer operation shutter? According to the blurb in the owners manual Stihl recommend that the shutter be flipped to the winter position when operating in temps below +10C I don't usually bother myself, and my saws seem to run ok. But does anyone change theirs over and does it make a difference to the running of the saw? Is it only a Stihl thing or do other makes of saws have it as well?
  20. A full head of wavy hair, ruggedly handsome good looks, and a fanny magnet would do it for me. Oh...., and a long pooey stick to beat of the Angelina wanna be's that the magnet would attract!
  21. Definately on the short lists for the Darwin awards and The Worst Dressed!
  22. Could'nt read the article, Nigellas pillows kept make me cross eyed.....
  23. Sad, but true. I used to work for a large multinational Arb firm that practised this. Don't know if they still do, but we used to get 3 weeks annual leave & 8 Bank Holiday days. This always used to bug me at the time, but when I look back, the whole time I worked for them I don't think I ever took my full annual entitlement anyway. Not sure if this means I'm a workaholice; mad; sad or just plain stoopid.
  24. Sean, the email you have received is the scam. according to Crimestoppers the email is total BS, as this extract shows:- Crimestoppers parcel e-mail scam A number of individuals have received an e-mail claiming to have been confirmed by Royal Mail and Trading Standards Institute and featuring a link to the Crimestoppers website [19 November 2010]. The e-mail describes what to do if you receive a card posted through your front door from a company called PDS (Parcel Delivery Service) and claims that this is a scam originating from Belize, designed to encourage members of the public to call a premium rate number through which they will be billed £315. The e-mail states that for more information, see the Crime Stoppers website, followed by a link to the Crimestoppers site. We can confirm that this e-mail was not issued by Royal Mail, Trading Standards Institute or Crimestoppers. If you received this or a similar e-mail please do not respond to it.
