  1. Brilliant! I was looking at the pics and thinking precisely the same thing, or that maybe seeing as he's in "The New Forest" he'd done a Ben Law! Dying to know the answer Mr Shutler, do tell.
  2. If you want "short" trees, stay at home. If you want to know what SORT of sized trees you may be climbing around Vienna, then they can be very big indeed. When I was there I was regularly (almost daily) climbing trees of 30-35m (98 - 115 ft). 40m (131ft) are not uncommon either.
  3. Total myth. Copper nails don't kill trees, people kill trees!

Followed ur link Liam....... They all look a bit gay to me! Think I'd rather be watching dancing pink elephants... Ahhhh, thats better.
  5. Rob, you're a diamond mate. Your generosity is much appreciated. Rick
  6. Likewise Dav-la, likewise. You'll have to ask PJ to provide us with a nice comfy pillow if I come back out, I don't want to end up with a flat head and look like a retard. While your at it get him to get a high chair in for the hobbit so we don't all get neck ache looking down at him. he he he
  7. Make sure when you pull them, the roots are left high and dry cos if there still paddling in the water they will keep growing. This year is likely to be even worse for balsalm because of the very cold winter. The seeds like a hard cold period (like they have in Himalaya's) so far more than usual are likely to germinate this year.
  8. Hiya Peeps, I'm part of a voluntary community group that is planning to do a a big spring clear up of a local green space blot on the landscape in my local town during the forthcoming bank holiday weekend. Assuming we can get rid of the smack heads and the teenage p**s heads for long enough! It would be enormously useful if I could borrow for 24/48 hours a petrol strimmer (ideally with a brush cutter head also). I would of course arrange pick-up and return of the same and vouchsafe that it will be returned in the same condition it was picked up in or make good any repairs should anything untoward happen. (Which it won't). If you can help please get in touch. I'm based in Stalybridge, Tameside area, so closer the better please. Obviously I'll not be schleping backwards and forwards to the Outer Hebrideses for one. Many thanks in anticipation folks, Rick
  9. Hey Western, Vienna is a cracking city. Make sure you head to Shabeen's on Thalia Strasse, many ex-pat tree surgeons hang out here for a beer or 10. You'll be with good company, and the staff are brilliant. Excellent food, can recommend the chilli hot bird and the red chicken curry. Hmm yum yum. Have a pint of Stiegel for me. Prost! Enjoy mate ya jammy get.
  10. Cheers Peter. Yep I have PM'd David Riding.
  11. Rob, trying to send you a PM but your box is full fella. Have a clear out and I can send you my reply re work availability. Cheers Rick

  12. BUMP Anything going in Gtr.Mcr/NW please PM me. Cheers.
  13. I'm looking to replace my old harness and have narrowed it down to these two (in the title). I'm a bit old school and although everyone raves about Treemotion it looks a bit over fussy/complicated. Has anyone tried both and can give me an idea of pro's and cons' of each to help me make a decision. Thanks.
  14. Cheers Jake, grabbing 40winks at the bar was all part of my master plan. A few beers and a kip in Shabeen's enabled me to wake up fresh as a daisy a raring to go 1st thing in the morning when everyone else was staggering about like zombies 1st thing. Sadly though when you're in your mid-forties, there is always a price to pay when you burn the candle at both ends. Work hard, play hard, re-charge when you can. It was great working with you all, thanks again. Rick
  15. Doh... I am the worst photographer in the world. For shame I had my canera in my bag the whole time and kept forgetting to get it out or was too busy to have time to bimble about and do my David Bailey impression. Sorry folks, crap excuse I know. Next time I will try harder. Monkey_D:- Damian is an ex-pat, originally from Chorley been in country for years. His other guys were expats too, with one extradorniarily english sounding Irishman. Went upto 30Km outside the city on jobs, but did'nt really get much of a chance to see much more of Austria. Most weekend views of the city were a bit blurry..... nice beer. Ahem!
  16. I would like to take this opportunity to express my thanks and gratitude to arbtalk member damian for providing me with an outstanding opportunity to work with him and his team recently in Vienna, Austria. Right from the start, from my initial contact the assistance and support offered by Daimo was impeccable. Flight tickets were arranged, meet and greet at the airport, accommodation provided and then a nice big hot hearty meal provided each day on account at a local Viennese hostelry. All I had to do was pack my bags and get my unworthy ass to my local UK airport! Brilliant. The work was interesting and varied in and around Vienna. The lads in the crew already working there are top class and very welcoming and friendly, they couldn’t do enough to help you find your feet and contributed greatly to enhance a fantastic experience. The city and the surrounding countryside and woodlands are stunningly beautiful, definitely some of the best “green offices” that I’ve worked in. The trees are in another dimension, compared to what I would normally work on back here in the UK. Almost daily we were working on trees 30-35m tall (that’s over a 100ft in old money), some fantastic specimens that really pushed you to your limits and then beyond. So if you are an experienced climber, looking for a challenge, love pushing your personal limits in really big trees, with a great work hard play hard attitude then I would heartily recommend that you get in touch with damian and start packing your bags. It’s a decision that I’m sure you won’t regret. My thanks and respect goes to Daimo; Kev; Dave and Jake.

  18. Hi Xdarkknight, Welcome to the forum. This is probably the best place to get your finger on the pulse of the UK Arb industry, ha, and boy o boy are you in for culture shock when you get here. Just remember that when someone starts taking the piss ( or bustin ya balls) its normal it does'nt mean they don't like you. So you don't have to reach for your "piece", everyone takes the P over here mate. And remember you call people "mate" not buddy or bud or pal or mo-fo! OK. Bartletts could be a good call, Bartletts UK is an extension of Bartletts USA, and the Bartlett family have taken regular hands-on visits to Bartlett UK in the past. There is also a Bartlett office in the Bristol (UK) area. As mentioned before though, most companys (Bartletts included) do usually expect you to have NPTC certs before they consider you. Try contacting Bartletts UK offices direct or maybe a US office to see if you can get a referral. Alternatively maybe contact jewillo or Ian Haynes on this site for more info Bartletts UK. Oh and of course don't forget to pimp yourself on this website's Employment Forum, its what its there for afterall. And best of British bloody luck to you mate, hope you get something sorted.
  19. I've got no real issue with walloping them in one hit, just wanted to make sure that by doing so the trees had some reasonable chance of survival afterwards. In particular my concerns lay around the timing. I know hawthorns are pretty bomb proof and respond strongly to judicious pruning, but practically felling the tree to a 6-8ft stump just as the leaves are starting to open I was unsure of what the long term implications might be. I should mention that these trees appear to be part of some former hedgerow boundary, a number of which have grown taller than others, the overall plan is to reduce them all to approximately the same height, which entails a drastic reduction on some whilst other can be more sympathetically reduced without losing most of the leaf canopy area.
  20. I do concur with the phased reduction approach, but client is'nt convinced by my arguments. (Probably thinks I'm just trying to rip him off trying to spin out the job for as long as possible) When I point out the risk of "shock death" by cutting to a 6ft stump the clients response is to fell them! So I'm trying to find some kind of middle ground where I can keep the trees and keep the client happy. Mmmmm tricky!
  21. I have a number of large hawthorns (between 20-30ft tall) which need to be reduced, but because they have grown along the fringe under a canopy of mixed sycamore/beech/ash woodland have large pronounced leans. The client would like these to be pruned right back to the woodland edge. Could these trees take a drastic reduction taking them down to 6ft stumps. This would remove approx 75-80% of the tree/canopy. The crowns of the overhanging woodland trees will be raised at the same time. Would the hawthorns survive such a severe cut if the work was carried out now, or would it be best to wait until the end of the growing season. Client wants the trees doing in one hit so a phased reduction program over 2/3 years is not really an option.
  22. Have you looked at Myerscough College, they offer an online Foundation Degree in Arboriculture. Its a 3 year course and bloody hard work!
  23. Even betterer, any Chelski fans on here? Muahahahahahahahahahaha And the blues lose the coveted 4th spot for champions league footy next season. Muahahahahahahahahahaha Muahahahahahahahahahaha
  24. BUMP Reliable hardworking freelance climber looking for work in NW/Gtr.Mcr area, from 22nd April onwards. PM me for details. Thanks.
  25. : after nearly 3 years. I do treat the leather uppers with a regular application of a good quality wax. Keeps the leather nice and supple and waterproof. Soles starting to wear down a bit now, but still really comfy and will probably buy another pair when they're ready to be replaced.
