  1. And check that the splines are good in the feed roller - they can wear and slip under load.

You shouldn't need a specific chipper mechanic to diagnose the engine not reaching max revs, anyone handy with engines should be able to play around with the throttle stops to see if lifting the revs solves your problem. Alternatively the no stress control can pick up the rotor speed from a sensor reading a toothed ring mounted on the flywheel driveshaft. If the sensor gap is too great the readings can be incorrect. More likely the drive belts are slipping then the rotor doesn't reach the required speed and the no stress doesn't work. If the speed feed comes from the alternator also check that the fan belt isn't slipping, allowing an under speed at the alternator. All of this can be checked by anyone with a bit of mechanical knowledge - let us know how you get on!
  6. Sorry, I don't know much about those without seeing it. Does the control box display chipper revs when the machine is running?
  7. Yes, it comes up then, but if the serial number plate is removed from these there is nothing to identify the model number to the uninitiated. I would imagine that this is the same with a lot of woodchippers. It isn't so much of an issue for potential purchasers looking to but as there is a good chance they know what model they are looking for/at - I am sure that I read somewhere the police have such a poor hit rate for identifying stolen plant as they don't actually know what they are looking at or recording. eg all diggers are reported as JCBs. I can't see many policemen knowing the difference between a chipper, woodchipper, wood chipper, wood-chipper, shredder etc if searching a database, and identifying a model number on a machine that has had its identity removed would be almost impossible. Just a thought really.
  8. Hi Steve - can the search function of the site be expanded to allow for more general searches? I have just uploaded details of a Greenmech chipper I had stolen a couple of years ago and when searching 'Greenmech' triggers no results (even though there are now 2 listed on the site as stolen). I'm just thinking what would pc plod look for if they used the site whilst trying to identify a recovered machine missing its serial numbers? Just a thought.

  12. Anything with a bear always seems to win at the APF! The standards of carvings were incredible throughout - I am amazed that Si O'Rourke's timber fairy didn't even place though.

  15. Always get a bigger mewp than you think you need, and remember that outreach is more important than anything else for tree work. Having too small a mewp for a particular job is always bad news and can be dangerous as you can't always position the machine properly to do the job safely. 20m tree = 25m mewp IMO.
  16. Great show, it was good to meet Steve today. I think Silky and 5 shires popped past whilst I was there too. I have caught up with a lot of old friends over the last 2 days, bought some great kit, cheered on one of my lads to 2nd place in the pole climbing (awesome work Dave), met plenty of new people (thanks to all the pole climbing lot for their hospitality) and drank more than I possibly should have... Cheers for the cuppa PeteB (more accurately your son!), it was great to catch up but I forgot to ask you about your Bedford! That new 190 looks a fantastic machine too! I hope the show was a success for all the exhibitors because I know how much it costs to attend these events - everyone I spoke to said they had done well despite the weather so that's all good!
  17. I haven't heard much good TW feedback over the last few years TBH, and I've also heard people having problems with the Forsts. I've run several Greenmechs over the last 12 years (as well as Timberwolf machines) and haven't had any problems other than general wear and tear. Backup from the factory is fantastic if there are ever any niggles. In answer to the OP, GM made(/make?) a number of different safetrak machines - the term safetrak refers to the adjustable undercarriage allowing machines to work on embankments. They did make a 220 safetrak (probably still do) but the most popular 'archetypal' safetrak is a 1928 - this is the machine widely used on railway and motorway embankments. Both the 1928 and 220 are both available as roadtow machines. The 220 is an older design with a square feed opening of approx 9 inch - on paper the 1928 is a smaller capacity machine at 7.5 inch, but it has a 11 inch wide letterbox feed which puts it on a par with larger capacity machines. I think they both run the same engines (the older machines were all Isuzu 50 hp but the new safetrak now has a Kubota lump). If you need to plough through a load of brash either machine will not disappoint!
