If its 3m from the end then of course its safe, as long as you are on the other end!! Twin eyes on a rope is not a good idea IMO.

Its run for the AA trade show, but the AA dont make the rules, Arb jobs Nick has that job and he runs comps at other locations (the student one for example) which are not to do with the AA. Paul, with the money you have spent on kit it wouldnt be much extra to do a CS38, just takes valuable time is all, it might be good for you though. You have seen the comp at the AA show last year so you know what is involved, should be easy enough for you, speak to Nick and see if he will let you enter?

You dont need them in an HSE way, but if the organisers choose to request them then they can, also the events are still insured so could be a criteria for the insurance. I have done 40 odd comps and never been asked to show a cert, or seen anyone else be asked.

There arnt any AA comps, you mean 3ATC (at the AA show) they say qualified, not sure wha they actuall mean by that, Nick Potts is the only one who can answer that, I have never seen anyone show a CS38 cert, maybe its assumed when people turn up with dirty gear with sawdust on it.

Sadly the full story is that she sold her lovely big house (around £2M) to a property developer who converted it to 8 flats (at @ £.5M each) and the first thing he did was top all the trees!!!! But individual flats is different from an exclusive private house with tree screening, each flat wants more light and as they are living on top of each other and share the garden, privacy is no longer there. It was a lovely house in the first place though!

I really wouldnt worry about stored energy! These are leylands!! (are you sure they are leylands??_) The probem with going lower is it mean the the top of the greenery that is left is now even further away from the trunks, so the new growth going to make the trees even wider than it would if done at one third, and the trees will be wider than they are tall. The reason for doing it at one third is that they could feasably then be maintened at that height, with quite a bit of work, but doing them at two thirds reduction is almost the beginning of the end, they will look crap and need replacing sooner. If the customer wants them at 10foot then they should either have topped them at that height when they were 12foot, or they should replant with 6 footer and wait a year. Thats the best advice, but of course that never happens, explain how they will look and do waht the customer wants, but you wont kill them!!

That is a good idea! Generally they will only tpo good specimens of fine trees in good locations and in good condition i.e. not been topped in the past. So if you can find any like this TPOs would be good.

None really, they will never be normal again, they will regrow outward and upwards from the greenery you leave behind, and be bigger and wider than they are now in a few years. Generally no more than a 30% off is recomended, but advise your client that unless they keep on top of them (annual maintenance) they will get worse and worse. Fell and repplant with something sensible is always the best long term solution, but i know clients dont want long term, so jsut do as they want but ideally no more than 30%. I recently asked for before and after pictures of hedge topping, so I can show a client how much density is lost (or appears lost) when the tops are gone. If you can take before and after pics and post them I would be much obliged! Thanks.

Rock climbing rope is dynamic. Tree climbing ropes have some give to them, not fully dynamic but a bit! Then there are semi static lines used for access lines (and now for SRT) but a fully Static line is quite a rare thing!! Some dyneema lines claim to be fully static, I remember there was am interest in these for footlocking (especially at comps) but the cost was huge, and the thinking now seems to be that a tiny but of give is better.

What about the point re. trees in conservation areas but on private land? I take it these are protected as well? Yes, these are protected. With your next point about someone moving into a house with a 150yr old beech, well if its not in conservation area and no tpo then yes they can do what they want, they own it. The sad thing is that a nice tree generally add to value of a property in substantial amounts of actuall ££££££££££'s, but a hacked about tree, lopped, topped or otherwise abused, is the opposite and new owners would have to deal with it (at cost) so this can be very detrimental to property value. This is one thing that homeowners seem unable to appreciate, weather in a conservation area or not, trees are an assett. We all know that a well serviced and maintained car is worth more than an abused one thats never been serviced! Thats simple!!! But a tree in a property is very similar, it is part of the properties value and should be looked after in the same way as the roof, the paintwork etc etc. A client asked me once waht it woudl cost to top a row of limes around her property and I suggested that the cost would be 10% off the value of her property. That was the only thing she could actually understand!! We thinned and lifted them instead and addedmaybe 5% to the value of her property!!
