  1. Not done the tyres yet, they are scuffed but not totally knacked! Due for all 6 new tyres soon anyway, so will manage for now.
  2. I uses it last week on a couple of small willow re pollards. DOnt get it! Coming back up, the rope was round a large limb so I couldnt slide the RW up past it due to my weight holding the rope tight against the limb. Ddrt, I could have pulled myself round the limb then taken in slack. Got the the job done quickly, but woudl have been a quick job anyway. Paul freebury called in and lent me his spare release pin which makes things easier, but still not getting the point. If its more efficient, i.e you use less energy in the day, then we will all get less fit, which means less food/beer each day. I cant have that!!
  3. OOooops!!! This is the stearing track rod, its supposed to be straight! No one is owning up to what happened but it was while doing a site clearance, I think it drove over a stump or something. Next day I drove it was like steering a boat!! The front wheels had two different ideas of which way to go so it was a bit of a battle. I ordered the parts but had a couple of days of work I had to get on with, needless to say the front tyres are scrubbed now! No worries, all fixed, £45 for the bar + 2x £30 for track rod ends no worries.
  4. I watched risky business the other day! Now theres an 80's classic. Also, heard a rumour that top gun is being re released in 3D.
  5. I loved that time too, I was also 16, and too naive to realise how fricken GAY that film is! Just watched the first bit, its so gay!! And Kelly mcgillis is so munted! Not as bad as the girl they got in Highlander but nearly!
  6. That sums it up, you get through the assessment but are not really a climber. Cambium savers are to protect the tree, the reduced friction is merely a side benefit to the climber, so maybe thats why they are not taught?
  7. Cambium savers can strian your arms a bit, especially when using prussik loops. YOu lose the friction at the top of the tree so that means there is extra weight being held on you arms for that brief second before you slide the prussik up. You will be holding more of your weight on one arm than you have been used to. You will feel it a bit at first, but if you dont have the strength then your in the wrong job! And as said above, there are more important reasons for having a CAMBIUM saver.
  8. Keep the husky helmet for ground work and chipping, put the visor on it if the petzl one will fit. You dont need a visor up the tree, get some safety glasses instead. Visors are for chipping, also the husky one is better in the rain because of the guttering, it makes the water drain off to the front when you tip your head forwards and not straight down your back, very handy! CAMBIUM SAVER!!!!!!
  9. I can just spot the first aid kit on there, green one with big plastic handle. Good kits those, chuck all the small contents in the bin and put two blood stoppers as big as possible in there instead. Actually probably keep the contents! and some plasters up the tree is a good idea, but a lot of the stuff in there is pointless, and there should be a proper first aid kit on site with all those things in anyway. No Cambium Savers at college?? What is the world coming to? What college?
  10. Oh, and I cant see a cambium saver?
  11. Its all good for starters. Rope looks a bit short to me. What length is it?
  12. Why is there a chainsaw chain anywhere near your climbing kit? Keep it away. Also, thats not nearly enough kit!
  13. I did two last week with no concerns. Late summer is worse, before they put their energy back into the roots, but even then you would be unlucky to kill one!
  14. I very nearly walked last week! But thats a whole nother story, the closest I have ever come to telling a customer to go .... themsleves! I will wait and see if i get paid (50-50 I reckon) before I tell the story. Anyway if you can say no I think it would make you feel better (you, I mean everyone, includign me!) if the profit on the worst day of the week is, say 100-150 and the better days of the week are 300-400 profit then ditching the worse one and having a day off is not a bad idea. I am still not vat registered (I was, now I'm not) but I am hitting the limit every month. For now I want to hit that limit in the least number of days per month, not try and increase turnover just decrease expenditure and make the same target for less work, less wages to pay and less fuel to burn. When I am ready to go over the vat threshold again I also want to be ready to go way over it!
  15. Doesnt that depend on your tax code? There are variances in that. Peters giude is better.
  16. Dean, hav eyou ever tried saying no to jobs? Its hard but if you could not do the one worst job of each week how much worse off would you be? So lets say the worst job is the one with the lowest profit, so lots of driving or fuel use and excess machinery where all round, how much worse of would you be without the net profit from that one job? I am not sure I could do it (say no that is) but if all of could we would not necessarily be worse off. We need to be able to earn a living in 5 days a week and anymore should be choice, in a perfect world of course.
  17. My point I was trying to make is that all the hours dont always feel worth it!
  18. Yes I try and have a mix but the balance is off at the moment In january I invoiced 2 jobs, but totalling 4.5k is actually not bad for january, but of course I had nothing to live on in january!! Feb: 5 invoices and higher gross but still no cash flow, so the one garden job we did was very welcome for my spirit as much as anything. Usually one day a week has to be paid straight away to keep things ticking over, and the rest pays the bills on the desk, when it arrives. So, of course I have been paid for the january jobs but the bills were here before the money arrived, not the other way round which is much nicer.
  19. If you are not in the UK then I apologise for the calling you a muppett! Foreigners eh!
  20. No worries, some sarcasm in my reply, knew you werent being like anything.
  21. Ok, I guessed, by the fact you responded, that it might not be a wage cut! Sorry to offend.
  22. Its a salary, muppet!! Take home is dependant on peoples tax status so its different for every one (well, not everyone, but there are variations)
  23. I put my prices up but keep getting work, trouble is the higher paid jobs need more paper work which means more time. Last week we did a tiny back garden job, had to climb over the rear fence for access, topped a hedge and pruned 2 apple trees for way less than I usually charge for a day cos it was such simple stuff. Not been in a suburban back garden in ages and didnt really want to do it!! Thing is it was totally stress free, minumum paper work finished early AND I got paid at the end of the day, it was the first payment I had had in weeks! I'm owed 6K and that little job made me happier (and temporarily better off) than all the other stuff!! Might have to do more small jobs to keep the sanity (too late for that!)
