  1. At first like a lockjack I found it jumpy and bitey. But as you try it more and more you get used to it. I dont think the ART positioner is recomended for single line use and I only use this method when I need that extra lenthg in my 2nd line or for positioning in complicated situations. The method of looping the line around the krab instead of knot tying is one trick I learnt and have found to be a good trick but was waiting for a member on here to tell me how unsafe and dangerous I am being.
  2. The main thing I noted was on one of the sections when he made the cut the butt did swing towards him but the guy lowering was good and let it fall fast enough to remove the danger away from the climber. The reason I give the climber praise is because he worked the tree well and had a plan before he started. He was lowering big sections which can take alot of nerve and did get the job done in good time. Im not saying a fast job is a good job but it does help if you can work controlled and fast. Also he is a big guy and I havnt seen many climber of his size work as well as he.
  3. Rupe I use this technique but use it on my positioner with a single line. The reason for this post isnt to discuss the fact that i some times move my lanyard to my bridge using a positioner but to ask how you fix your karabiner to you rope to make a single line. I used to marlin spike or alpine butterfly it to the rope once it was looped over the branch but have found a much faster easier technique. I put the line over the branch and put the karabiner back on the line but twist the line twice around the karabiner when it is open (obviously closing the krab once i add the wraps. When you sit on this the rope looks like it has one wrap around the spine of the karabiner and does not seem to cross load as the line continues to stay straight. I have tried to reason why this could be dangerous but it seems to work everytime without slipping etc. Have you ever tried this or am i even making sense to you?
  4. I subby climb for £120 a day Ground at £110-120 depending on which firm takes me. It took us 7 months of working for free whilst we plowed the money into our business (partnership) before we finally have a position in which we can pay a wage. Like Ian Flatters I used to earn more employed and self employed we earn £50 a day and the rest goes to the company. Get yourself a rough plan to stick to as it will help you in the long term. Like littletree has said once when you do it you tend not to look back. But remember that times are tuff at the moment so you will be taking a risk. Those bad weather days or holidays are not covered and take that into account and you cant charge to quote so that all adds up. Your biggest asset is YOU so if you feel you are ready to take on a challenge and present yourself well then go for it. All the best
  5. I got a positioner. Havnt tried a cinch. But from what ive seen the art seems simple to use. Will try and have a play with the cinch at some point. I got the pole saw flatters...wonder what Tony will flog next.
  6. Some pics would be interesting. If it seems to be mainly one side that is effected on both trees then I would be considering something effecting the roots on the side which would effect the crown.
  7. Interesting video. Climber is bloody good.
  8. Thanks for that. If you dont ask you dont find out.
  9. You are correct Hama. The one thing that is said to show a difference between G.resinaceum and G.pfeifferi is that the resinous coating on G.resinaceum is supposedly softer. To be honest I have not tested this my self and I imagen it would be hard to always find a difference.
  10. Im not saying you're wrong but I was always told if you are pulled over with a heavy load they will take the chipperweight into account if you are overweight. I would love to see the actual rules/laws on this as I think it is a problem we all face.
  11. I would love to try a greenmech if this is the case.
  12. Point taken Tommer. We take all the wood we can as we use wood to pay for our yard space off a very good friend. that is the only problem with the small machines. But when you have a larger machine on your tow bar, this increase in weight decreases the weight amount you can carry in chip and wood. We find it a challenge when you are on site to fit everything on your truck without feeling you might be exceeding the weight limit. Towing a light chipper helps us to feel that we are trying to keep the weight down (no excuse I know)
  13. The last time I checked the TW 125 petrol does come with twin rollers. We hire one at the moment and find it is a good machine but occasionally blocks up on wet brash or leylandi. Im interested in the bearing life as we are close to buying a TW 125 Or the Greenmech equivalent 13-25. The greenmech 13-25 (I think thats the name of it) has an option of a petrol or diesel engine. The small machines are definately on our favourates as whats the point of chipping material bigger than 5 inchs when it can be sold or burned.
  14. A good way to check if the fungus is Ganoderma resinaceum is to see how resenus the top of it is. If it cracks easy then it is a likely sign of resinaceum. However from the limited pics its hard to give a certain ID. Like the white fluffy fungus.Just goes to show, keep an eye out for new findings.
  15. We're going to give it a go in our woodland. Wondering if rooting powder would work in this situation if you were to actively expose the cambium?
  16. Billy boys mating ritual had almost worked.......that was untill his mama turned up...
  17. Old Billie Redneck kept his prized log hidden from the ladies.
  18. Got it for around 60 quid. Im sure the price will go down but its pretty new out there at the mo. I use it with a foot ascender. But there are many possibilities. Thats why I was asking everyone else really.
  19. Fagus and Quercus. Fairly large specimins. I just wonder how you would go about the method to do so. Would you have to climb every limb with a tape measure? I've just never thought about it before.
  20. It's hard to see in the pic but behind the cam there is another smaller cam that can be set to lock the main cam in place. In the pic its black so its hard to see against the black handle...
  21. im sure someone will put one up. I havn't got a photo. Type it into google for a pic.
  22. thats a bloody good video. An eye opener
  23. Ok..I want to get an approximate but as accurate as possible figure on the weight of a few of the veteran trees im managing. How do you work out the weight of a tree ( without cutting it down ) ?
  24. Just brought myself a lovely new gadget. Has anyone on here brought or had a climb on the Kong hand futura. Its a one handed ascending aid that is nice and compact. So far im pretty happy with it but still playing around with it.
