  1. Seasoned Logs - Naturally air dried from sustainable hardwood £198 for 1.6 cube of green fresh split hard = 117 per cubic meter so it says. https://www.certainlywood.co.uk/kiln-dried-logs Kiln dried 233 for 1.6 cube = 145 a cube. Cant see how you are getting 96 a bag and 78 a bag unless they are pro rata rates for smaller bags. Perhaps I am reading it wrong. A
  2. Put a chainsaw through some of it this afternoon, far to far gone, even as firewood it wont be saleable, so own use only. Second stick might be a bit better but I am not holding my breath. A
  3. Its a lot browner than the pic of that massive trunk, Cadburys Dairy Milk Brown. I thought it was all rot until I got up top it. If I could cut a couple of mantle beams out of it that would be nice but if its crap then it can go into a firewood bag. A
  4. Had an old oak ripped in half by the gales on Friday. Basically the top of the trunk has been blown off. I have two lumps of trunk, each about 5 feet long and at least 2 feet in diameter. One of these lumps has some significant bends in it The outer 6 inches or so are natural oak colour, the center is brown but feels pretty solid. Is this worth milling?., rest of the tree is still standing all be it with a rip all the way down the trunk exposing the brown. Thanks A
  5. Surely that Mog did not get out of that unaided ?. Looks like a decent 4WD tractor needed. A
  6. I had 100 from them last summer, 2 mesh + 2 28 stripe side when Bag Supplies ran out of green and then white ones. Decent bags and work as well as Bag Supplies ones. The light mesh in any bag is always prone to a bit of damage when stacking from loader forks. Would buy more especially if they did green ones, Bag Supplies have still not filled an outstanding order for green bags I placed a year ago. A
  7. Sold a Charnwood stove the other day, that has 2 free briquettes inside it made by Verdo, they looked a good product, heavy, solid, no waste in the stove. A
  8. Keep the rain off the top and it should be fine to sell next autumn. A
  9. I have stocked briquetts for a couple of years and can hardly give them away. I am up to speed on the quality angle, as I understand it the lighter less dense ones are made using machinery from the plastics industry which a produces far lower pressure and a less compact block. A

  11. The newer designs of stove for highly insulated home want a max 200mm log. This will create issues for quite a few processing machines as they can only cut to 250mm. A
  12. Hi, I use a 1971 MF135 to run my processor. Modern red diesel does not have the lubricants in it that it used to have and that really my injector pump needs. I have had issues with the injector pump last summer but since I have been giving it a dose of diesel additive it has generally behaved nicely. No lube and when hot it wont start, its like the stop its out all the while. A well placed tap on the inj pump sometimes but not always affects a cure. Engine is over 7,000 hours. I was talking to someone about this earlier today, he recommended a drop of 2 stroke oil instead of the additive as its much cheaper, anybody tried this of have any other solutions to the problem. Thanks A
  13. I see, or rather I did not at the time. A
  14. Logs are not split so wont dry that fast. A
  15. Dont forget you will want a half decent size tractor to pick up a Palax 900 assuming you want it on a 3 point hitch. The 700 and the Posch are quite a bit lighter. To get the best out of these big machines you will need an hydraulic feed rack. I am in a similar situation to you also with a 700 and a manual rack. I have been thinking that maybe i could get away with it or with a single hyd rotor bolted to the feed trough when I upgrade, I also have a Japa manual rack at present. A
  16. [ Me, she was complaining they burnt to quick otherwise. Then complained about lack of heat !!. A
  17. . Actually that point is arguable, as I understand it a driver taking plant to site and the using that plant on site as long as its within 30 miles of base is exempt. If he/she is not the operator of the plant then its tacho needed. A
  18. If your fully laden train weight, so towing vech + fully laden trailer weight exceeds 3.5 tonnes for firewood haulage for hire and reward you need a tacho and to keep drivers hours records, take legal rest brakes etc. My Disco 2 + IFW GD85 twin axle firewood trailer comes in at 5.7 tonnes GTW!!. You don't at present need an operating licence, CPC, 6 week checks etc. A
  19. Most Defra approved stoves ( stoves approved to burn wood within a smoke control area) have either an additional (Terciery) air supply feeding into the rear of the firebox or are set up in such a way that they cant be closed right down. Some stoves at the top end of the market do have controllable terciery systems. Closing a stove down massively increases smoke pollution but it also blacks the glass as no air is flowing past it and puts tars into the flue. The temp in the firebox needs to be kept above the combustion of the creosote given off by all logs in gas form. Allow it to drop below the combustion point, then the gases dont burn and the condense in the chimney. This means heat lost and tar up chimney may be lining you up for a chimney fire. If burning through the night is critical to you use smokeless coal. A
  20. Have a look at the Binderburger 500 or some of the big self powered Multiteck processors. 24 inch timber splitting into saleable logs would mean 12 -16 way split. You are going to need a lot of pressure to do that. But more importantly the brackets securing the rams fixed end and the splitting knife also need to withstand the pressure and then some. My brother had a go at building a simple splitter a few years ago, he could not stop the brackets bending and gave up in the end and when needed uses a splitter I bought for a couple of hundred quid. A
  21. No engine, likely to be over 10k. Electric power option though. A
  22. Anybody that can reverse a drawbar trailer has my respect especially like that. A
  23. In the stove industry the seller of the stove is responsible for all warranty issues with it not the local dealer in whose area some web based grey importer has sold it into. At least one well known brand has now stopped totally all supplies to anyone selling on line and only offers warranty support on products sold through its UK distribution outlet. Grey imports are down to the seller only. Its a fair chance the saw manufacturer is well aware of what this dealer is doing and quietly supports it. Personally I would go further and advise that ANY warranty issues on products supplied by others will not under any circumstances be entertained and they need to go back through point of sale only. I don't have these issues but if I did I would not get paid to sort them out. A
  24. That is good, sound and accurate advice. You do need as others have said to decide if you want a boiler stove or not, the downside of this is that extra plumbing work may be needed especially if you have a condensing boiler and no cold water tank. Consult a qualified plumber. Second thing is how much heat output is needed, a, for the room and B, for the water if going boiler stove. Brands, As a stove supplier I will only supply brands that I know will not give me any issues once sold. Currently my most popular brands are Morso, Aarow, Villager and Esse. Of those Morso are 10 years ahead of almost all other stove builders, their new DB15 boiler stove is a top draw bit of kit. Arada do some nice stoves well priced in their Aarow, Villager and Stratford (boiler stove) ranges. Esse also make nice stoves, not that technically advanced compared to Morso but they do what they say and are not at Morso price levels. Others have mentioned Burley, I have no reason to doubt what they say, I have seen a couple and will be taking an agency for them shortly. I have this winter also sold a few Boru 20kw boiler stoves, Irish but well made from UK steel. CE approved as legally now required. If you want a decent bargin I have a Broseley Hercules 20 boiler stove to clear, it takes a 7 inch liner, took it to site and could not get a 7 inch liner down the chimney. PM if interested. A
  25. Have a look here: Energy Cost Comparison | Nottingham Energy Partnership This shows logs as a fuel as just cheaper than gas per kwh but with a fraction of the greenhouse emissions which keeps the lady of the house happy. Buying hard cord in at commercial rates then £85 a cube is not making money especially if that includes VAT. If you are selling timber from arb jobs that you have acquired free or for low cost then of course thats different. Demand for logs is only going to increase in the short/medium term, gas supplies are a bit iffy, we can only now store 7 days worth of gas, we import slightly over 50% of our gas needs usually from the Soviet block. Nuclear power stations coming off line means that my winter 2016 we will have a potential electricity shortfall, demand being more than we are able to supply unless we are able to buy from abroad. People wish to be independent from relying on these major foreign owned energy firms, hence the demand for stoves. My logs can stay in the shed at 100 + vat let alone 85 including. Cost of delivering say 10 miles away is £1.50 a mile each way, so £30, + your time + trailer maintenance costs. If you dont have at least £60 on top of your costs you are loosing money if you are delivering the products. A
