  1. I have been pulled off the M6 when in convey with HGVs at 56mph with cruise control on, so doing nothing wrong, twin axle 2 yr old IFW box trailer, about 300kgs onboard with a gross wt of 2700. So doing nothing wrong is no guarantee that you wont get pulled, but in six years of pulling big trailers maybe 3 - 4 days a week that is the only time I have been pulled and I have two weigh bridges within 10 miles. Having regularly pulled weights at my max 2700 then even with a Landrover able to pull 3500 I would not personally fancy much more weight in all but good road conditions. In my youth I pulled 10 ton grain trailers with 60hp/70hp tractors, ( MF165 and Ford 5000), on wet ground loaded trailers ( hen muck mainly) could easily get away from you unless very carefull. A
  2. As an Esse cooker dealer I am surprised that you have not bounced this one off your local dealer. 990CH has a stated heat output to water of 57,000 BTU when burning Anthracite, ( natural smokeless coal). Heat output on wood is as far as I can see not published but is likely to be within 10%, this can be checked with David Randleson at Esse, dial the main number and go option 2. 57,000 BTU equates to about 16.7kw. A single rad 600mm tall x 1200mm long will want about 1kw., a double rad of the same size then 2kw and so on. A 120 litre DHW tank will want about 2.6kw. You will have heat losses in the pipework around the system, quite how much depends on pipe size and length of run but on average probably a couple of kw. So to answer your how many rads question is not as straightforward as it appears, assuming 2.6kw for DHW, 2kw for pipework losses that leaves you about 12kw for the rads and another 3kw-5kw radiating off the front of the cooker into the kitchen. https://esse.com/range-cookers/esse-990-ch/ A couple of things to be aware of but hopefully your dealer has advised you already. A, The optional Boiler Control Unit ( or similar) should be installed. This optional device installs into the cold water return pipe external of the cooker. It allows the cooker to get up to temperature before allowing cold water into the water jacket around the firebox. In my opinion this is vital as without it you wont be able to use the 990 to cook with until it has heated up all the water in the system. Without it you will also find the firebox running at low temps which will lead to tars being deposited into the cooker flueways and the flue system itself. B, The pull from the flue needs to be from memory around 15PA ( Pascalls) this is about a fair bit higher than that needed from a stove (12PA) as the pull needs to be able to pull the hot flue gases around the cookers internal flueways. So if you need to run it on a 4.5 m flue you will possibly need a wind driven rotary cowl or similar on top of the flue to upgrade the pull. As your current appliance is somewhat similar to the Esse then these last two points are probably academic. PM if needed. A
  3. What sort of weight or volume per load? Your post says 18T grab, that does not mean its a 18T ish load ( but I suspect it does) I am not interested but trying to get things clarified for others that may be, A
  4. To answer two questions, A, Ecoburn insets, They are a radiating stove only, so the front lump of metal sticking into the room gets hot and thus radiates heat into the room, thats it. A convector inset does that AND convects air drawn into the bottom of the stove from the room via an air gap between the firebox and the outer case around the other three sides and back into the room above the door thus using all four sides of the stove to create heat coming out into the room. Upside of a radiating inset is a slightly wider firebox so can take slightly bigger logs. Output figures are fairly accurate. As such if the stove is wanted to wack out lots of heat, perhaps in a large room then a convector would be better at doing this. However if its more for effect or in a smaller room then there should not be an issue. They do burn well and can be installed without a flue liner but I would strongly advise installing a liner to make the stove as efficient as possible. Make sure that you infill loose insulation material around the stove and lower part of the liner to make sure that no heat is lost up the chimney from the stove body. ( tip it in from the top of the chimney after lining) Given that happens all should be well providing the stove is correctly sized to the room. B, The Esse Insets, Esse were the first company to develop the inset stove ( so they say !!) to replace the old Parkray fires. The 301 and 350 are convector insets so all 4 sides used to produce heat, they produce so much heat if driven hard on solid fuel that extra precautions are advised re extra expansion joints in a hearth and possibly the back plate. The heat output ratings are I feel a bit conservative. I act for both Arada ( Ecoburn) and Esse, its always the lady that chooses what she wants, I would sell twice the number of Ecoburns as I do Esse's and dont have problems with either but I am carefull to ensure that when installing the Ecoburn we line and infill with insulation. If you are intending to line the Ecoburn install you need a connector from Arada as the outlet on the back of the stove is letter box shaped. Hope that helps and puts your mind at rest, fuel it with DRY logs, nothing over about 16% MC and the dryer the better and it should work fine. A
  5. I have been shown the door with a twin axle trailer and Landrover even with an old matress aboard. Parked outside the gate and dragged it in. A
  6. I was part the way through putting in a grant applic for the last round of funding. Under the terms and conditions people had to be employed to process the timber and deliver it, this could be fairly easily checked by the powers that be. So if the people had gone then you may get a follow up visit. got a feeling that there were random inspections anyway. I saw what was coming, warm winters, oil price, Ash die back, every farmers son with a saw selling diseased ash logs for beer money, so I pulled out of the application and am importing what I need. Still got my little tractor and processor as the tide may turn. A
  7. No 225mm in front is still the legal min but we prefer to see 300mm or sometimes more to cover the sweep of the door. Someone else posted about efficiency of insets due to only one exposed face. The Aarrow Ecoburn 5 and 7 have just that, one exposed face that radiates heat, frankly I dont really like them. They do heat but not to the extent of a convector inset stove and are best used where its more a feature rather than a major supplier of heat. Convector insets have an air channel between the firebox and the outer case, air is drawn into the channel from the room, circulates between the two using convection and is returned into the room as warmed air. So the whole depth and back of the stove are used to create convected heat as well as the front providing radiated heat. Examples of this design of stove are the Esse 301 and 350, the Aarrow I series and all Morso insets. A
  8. No, fresh cut in winter it has a MC of about 35%, that will burn but not well. It will give poor heat and be depositing excess soot and tar into the flue. If it was felled last winter I doubt it will be ready by Sept but might be OK by January. A
  9. Dont forget that FEO's etc can read when your renewal comes up. Dont think you cant be traced to your real name you can. Suggest that post is either removed or edited. A
  10. I got my payment through to Lithuania on Weds so as to not get nailed if the pound dropped as a result, unusual that I get it right. A
  11. Are County bats still near St Neots Hunts County - About Us Looks like it, they may have some suitable off cuts. A
  12. Do not put a freestanding stove in there, while it is legal you need a decent air gap around the stove to achieve a good airflow and getting the heat out into the room. While I dont have the dimensions to hand it sounds like the Esse 301 inset range ticks all your boxes. You need a hearth depth of 400mm from the front face of the opening to comply legally but a bit more would be nice. A
  13. That is lovely thanks for sharing. A
  14. Agreed but its all down to what SHE likes. Last winter with stoves like the Esse 100 and Villager Chelsea it was mainly single doors, the two winters previously double door versions outsold single doors. A
  15. Never had any issue with double doors not sealing but can understand how it happens with cheap imported stoves as the casings tend to buckle. A
  16. DONT go for the old 700 double door, getting the ash pans out was a major pain in the backside. The new single door 700 Vista is far better. A
  17. Crikey I am in the East Mids and cant source decent cord, I now import. Would not mind the contact details there . Thanks A
  18. You have to be very carefull here. A, The crates quoted at 1 cm, 2 cm etc are just that, ie that is the overall size of the crate including the pallet its on. So whats advertised as a 1cm pallet will in effect only contain about .75 cu m of stacked timber which in turn will equate to about 1.3 cu m loose. B, Crates are limited in size as they have to be stacked inside a container. C, Crates have to hold together in transport, getting a damaged crate really holds up the unload. D, Unless you are going to repack or tip it into a tipper trailer prior to delivery avoid the 2cm size as they are just to large to handle safely and are VERY unstable on a loader. E, Log length, no more than 250mm, moisture level the lower the better, certainly no more than 20%. You will need 2 people to unload a container, one in the container with a pump truck and the other on a teleporter or similar. Most of the better suppliers have sales staff who speak good english so you can always ring them up. A
  19. Just to clarify, I assume this is a hook loader trailer pulled by a farm tractor, 26 cube should be under max weight dry but probably overweight wet, from memory max loaded weight for a rig like that is 24 tonnes., cargo weight about 13-14 tonnes depending on the trailer. So the buyer turns up with suitable tractor, takes trailer away, empties and brings back. Dry at £4 a cube is a good deal. A
  20. All members asking for prices, dont forget that there are at least half a dozen people here making kindling in these sort of volumes. Therefore price is a sensitive subject, if you want prices then PM him as he is hardly likely to publicise them. A
  21. I am an Esse dealer, given the size of room at 80 cum meters, poor insulation so divide by 12 = 6.5kw, then add on for staircase , especially if the staircase is within 3 or 4 m of the stove then it has to be the 200. While stoves are most efficient running pretty well flat out a genuine 5kw wont be enough. Heat outputs in stoves are nominal, like a car doing 60mph, more heat can be obtained by loading small pieces of hardwood or softwood or solid fuel such as anthracite, if you want less heat put less fuel in but keep the air supplies pretty well open. You could also look at the new Esse 700 Vista, thats about 10kw, might be a bit to much, or the Arada I600SLF, this is a big 5kw nominal with actual heat output range of 2kw - 9kw. Most 5kw nominal stoves run 3kw - about 7kw. Hope that helps, pm me if necessary, buy it from you local independant Esse dealer, NOT one of the online companies, support from them is zero in the event of a problem. A
  22. Unless you have direct access to timber at the moment then import it by the container kiln dried. Then all you need in handling gear and a loader. A
  23. When I bought a Posch I was going to have a winch, mainly to lift large lumps into place but it was a very expensive option. Not sure about the splitter that you have in mind but the Posch has a leg connected by a chain to the split head, so you roll a log in, then as you raise the head the log is stood up vertical for you. I have not missed a winch but if you need to pull big lumps of timber out then it may be viable. A
  24. Look at what those around you are currently charging, but be aware of the volumes they are selling. A dumpy bag for example round here seems to be a 700x700x700 bag so about .35 of a cube. Dont be a busy fool, you are in the game to make money not be busy as hell and make nothing. A
