  1. Do you have anyone with chapter 8 as a hefty fine can be issued and insurances will be invalid without it!
  2. The issue here seems to smack of what is rife in every business controlled by bosses who like to take short cuts and put their employees safety at risk for small financial gain. Tell your mate to take legal advice and get a different job with a professional boss.
  3. You or someone on site must have chapter 8 if using signs, so if not you have to pay the traffic mgt company to supply a guy to sit there all day which will put up the cost significantly. last time I had lights plus chapter 8 guy was £435:00 plus vat for a day!
  4. It is beyond me why people take on this work and try to do it live. Any clients I have who request this work I tell them look at the pole and take the number, phone your local electricity wayleave dept and request that their equipped crews come and sort it. Usually a 16 week wait but hey no fatal or near fatal incidents. There are plenty of other trees to work on so leave the ones near lines to the utility crews, lifes short enough.
  5. you ask your barber for a crown reduction when getting your hair cut!
  6. One thing to consider pre-pulling it out in one lump is how is the pond sealed? Lined, is it clay or natural? You could also anchor in off adjacent tree walk along the trunk and sling the boughs at the end, cut them free and either pulley them up and out or drag them out. leaving a trunk to practice some rolling feet techniques with!!
  7. That will be what you wanted to know with regards to the part of hedges on agricultural land then:wink:
  8. Any hedge that is on agricultural land and you want to cut it down or do major adjustments to then you need to get an application in. I have uploaded some notes for you and others that may need this. Trees are treated as in any other situation, ie if in conservation, tpo or sssi etc certain forms need to be filled in. Hedgerows Regulations Your Questions Answered(2).pdf
  9. I run on 25% pure veg oil and 75% derv, no problems just cheaper fuel bills, simple!
  10. try on woodnet if no joy here, there are lots of contacts on there in the green woodwork industry.
  11. At the end of day if you are going to ascend the same tree the next morning a lot of people take the climbing line out only having to reclimb to top anchor next morning. I clip an old line to the end of the climbing line and run this up and swap it round in the morning.
  12. are you Michael Fishs' apprentice! rained cats and dogs yesterday like I thought and also raining today, best stick to the day job peckerwoo and leave weather to nature
  13. Ok, will give it some more muscle, just didn't want to force it and break it. Cheers.
  14. stripped it down put small bolt into the bottom of oil uptake bit and can't get it to come out? how does this bit come free???
  15. lets hope so peckerwoo as the ground being so sodden when it should be frozen solid is certainly throwing a spanner in the works!
  16. It is the model with the thread bit on it, your post makes sense and yes it does look a bugger to get out! I'll give it a go later on and see.
  17. Tell mother that if she wants rent then you need to earn money and this entails all that comes with your job. If she won't where it then time for you to start looking for your own gaff and mum will have to work some more to fill the gap left by your rent and presence not being there:biggrin:
  18. Does anyone know how to get the oil line cleaned out on the stihl pole pruner? It has stopped oiling and I have cleaned all the inside of the oil tank and bits, the problem is in the line from the tank to where it meets the bar. Any solutions welcomed.
  19. You don't need a brand new truck to show the customer, it's all on the appearance and general tidiness of the vehicle, yourself and crew. Turn up on site in a clean truck, clean gear and a positive attitude. This goes a long way in the eyes of the client and for your company. When finished on site give the truck a quick jet wash and maintain your professional image. When entering a pub/restaurant that I may eat/drink in the first thing i look at is the toilets, if they are dirty then its a no go for me.
  20. I had the same problem on a km85, the problem was in the ht lead where it meets the spring bit which fits onto the spark plug. The metal piece bites into the ht lead and this had come loose. My solution was to buy the coil and ht lead as this only comes as one piece!! bad design as it was only a few pennies fault that needed a £40 part. Sounds you have exactly the same problem, hope this helps.
  21. Don't think it's costa del kent down here at the moment, in the past couple of weeks I've been wetter than all of last year!!!! not looking good for today or Monday . Have to crack on though as machinery on site dictates use!! Even going to have to work on Saturday!!! which is rare for me, just to get a dry day in:thumbdown:
  22. I did a crown reduction on a Walnut at end of November and this was dormant, however less than half a mile away 3 weeks later did some dead wooding and removal of failing branches on another Walnut and it was like it was raining underneath it, quite strange. I do put it down to the trees believing its Spring after a hard cold spell then a rapid rise in temperature, if we get another cold spell it will confuse them even more! BTW elder down here already in leaf!
  23. 2010 was a great year for me even better than 2009 with a 25% rise in net profit. 2011 is looking to start well too with more work in the book already than at this time last year. so hopefully be able to take August off again like last year and work hard through out the rest whilst still maintaining a good life/work balance. I also think the VAT rise will work in my favour being well under the VAT threshold. To me the most important point is keeping your overheads to an absolute minimum which I do. No point having lots of gear if you are not realistically using it all the time. There are plenty of hire companies doing great deals on arb machinery now which helps achieve this. Hoping that we all hit the ground running this year, quoting will be much more competitive so remember that. I got 90% of jobs I quoted for last year so looking to get the same if not better.
  24. This seems like a great start to the new year for someone on here out of work. The respectable salary and benefits should attract you the right person. Good luck.
