  1. they are flat when sharpend on a surface grinder
  2. Never use one, rope, harness and more profit!
  3. I always have bar covers on my saws,I can't understand people who put saws without covers with there gear.
  4. The TAX man and HSE take very different views on this. often subbies are classed as employed from a H&S point of view.
  5. Lets all sit back and chill out! MerryChristmas to you all! and plenty:008:and:drunk::and no:bawling:and:cussing:
  6. I try not to give a day rate,i give a price for the job and stick to it,often customers are amazed at how quickly we get done, but they are alway happy to pay the price agreed.I think the fact that we come in large mog with timber tailer and loads of kit helps, they realise that they are paying for all that overhead not just labour. Also if in an area all the firms charge low prices and try to win work on price, rates just spiral downwards.I think the way push up you're income is to add value to you'r service with higher standards and more efficient working ie, more work in less time.If you can get you're rate up the other firms will follow,if you price a job for £400 and you're competitor wins it for £350 when he is doing the job he will normally ask what the other prices were, when he next prices a similar job he will vote maybe £375 or £390 he want to beat you're price but not by much, and if the standard of you're work is better you will still win the job with a slightly higher price. I'm not trying to tell anyone how to suck eggs i'm sure must of you know all this and more! but its just my 2 pence worth! I think most of use offer a very professional service and deserve a good standard of living and some of the rates metioned on here are way to low IMO.MerryChistmas one and all!
  7. In a situation like that i think i would have cut a very open gob(notch)also known as a birds mouth gob,cut a standard back cut just higher than what would have been the bottom of the gob had it not been opened up,leave a thick hinge and pull, the gob should be open enough not to close so the hinge won't snap.I would have still roped the base as you did. But any way, you'r method worked and there was no damage and thats all that matters, merry chistmas:cheers:
  8. Damm! if it had'nt been so near christmas i'd have got the TPO on and put a stop to this crime!
  9. To clarify I do top and lop,but don't call it good arb practice,I tell the customer that it will result in excesive regrowth and rot,I only do it if the customer insists.
  10. Nice you going to staight fell or dismantle?
  11. If you read, i said its already been butcherd,so the damage is done, once you pollard you have to continue.
  12. Agree! the tree has already been butcherd, cut back to the old nuckle and you'll get even regrowth.
  13. Telhol,I cut trees in the same way as the one in the pic,but only if the customer insists, and I tell them that it is not good arb practise and that excessive regrowth and decay are inevitable.
  14. don't shoot the messenger this is your statement, you say you cut back to branches1/3 diameter:wave:
  15. I don't wish to stir the sh1t,but many of the cuts on this tree are back to growth points that are much less than 1 third the size of the one removed and water shoots are inevitable.
  16. You got to get them to keep it! you can't nip down the garden center and get another! And if you do upset the tree pixies they may come and find you!
  17. With sheep you age them by looking at there teeth?
  18. Should still be 50:1 the reason we use less oil now, used to be 25:1, is that the new oil is better.
  19. Fell Them!fell Them All! only kidding! I would remove the ash and plant something smaller and pollard the willow.
  20. I work mostly with one none saw using groundie,so rope down very little.I cut ever thing in the tree there is no more sawdust overall as it will need cutting at some stage and sometimes if the dust distributed further you can nip round with the blower and blow of paths, sheds ect, there can be less work. I think we all have our own style and should do what suits us best, there are many way of doing something right:cheers:
