  1. granny used to put vinager on mine! oh and use milk for a bee sting, something to do with the ph of the venom
  2. mini spoon and spalted beech bowl thing:001_smile:
  3. i do a written quote with a section at the bottom that i sign and my client signs with the agreed price in black and white, i also have another section for additional work which again i get them to sign of on before i lift a saw. got shafted myself a few times and i found this system works well and keeps everyone happy
  4. if he had c4 for brains he couldnt blow his nose
  5. just another thing you could mention to the neighbour is just how much water a long established oak like that takes up! the removal could result in ground heave or even flooding. i know this is more likely in clay soil but you could leave that bit out, or i could be completly wrong
  6. found out at chrimbo that my mate is the rep for dmm over here. he just moved into a house which is heated by a big wood burner so was wondering if i could give him logs for shiny things. i think i will be able to help
  7. use them all the time where practical. if you can get them near a tree its save a lot of huffing and puffing and usually gets you up to a position were you have foot holds and get to your anchor quicker and fresher. most of my work is domestic so handy for hedges too
  8. heading out on one with the national trust on the 20th feb, really looking forward to it. check thier website might have something going on in your neck of the woods (pardon the pun0
  9. the big firm i used to work for has the electric board contract and the housing excutive contract. he undercut everyone to get them and now makes a loss every time he sends a squad out to the electric work. the HE work is just paying and as he only has 3 climbers out of 16 guys they are tied up in the contract work so the hatchet men get sent to the domestic work ( i have had 4 of his old clients on the phone looking me to come round and sort out bad work). i think he will have to downsize soon or go under
  10. never worked on those before but did a few Araucaria araucana. are those ones as sore and sticky to work on?
  11. give M Large a buzz. he has all the nice toys over here and might be able to sort you out or at least point you in the right direction. what town you in? might need to get rid of a load of logs some day and the more contacts the better
  12. lost four nice jobs in a row to a new local firm who own thier own chipper! i have to add 150 to a job to cover the hire and running of a chipper. i am on the hunt for my own chipper now so i can try and compete
  13. think it depends on what clip you have on it, it has to be three way opening to be used as second system. my flip line has only a two way clip on it and was told by a loler chap that i can only use it for take downs backed up with my climbing line
  14. sounds like goldschlager!! good stuff if it is had many a good night on it. form of schnapps i think
  15. yep! feels funny but you will get used to it. near threw up once after a windy day doing lots of skinny birch
  16. too true andy! most of the time the 90 is on the road and as you say the tread just wont go down. great set of boots
  17. good point! girlfriend is 40 and can still climb like a 20 year old... got the body of a 20 year old to prove it ha ha. jack from merrist wood is no spring chicken either and he can make a young fit man look stupid in a tree, even with his dodgy leg and slightly of centre hat
  18. really off topic but just told the girlfriend your user name hamadryad. thats what she named her guitar about three years ago...... anything you would like to tell me ha ha little tree spirit
  19. i work for myself now, after years of seeing how not to do it in both the tree welfare standard not to mention the HS standards i had to work to, but now i have no funding for further education. it feels like i am now stuck in a world of self learned knowlage that i think is right but at the end of the day in some cases could mean life and death for clients. In some cases i just remove the tree as that is the final action my knowlage allows me to do but with further education the tree may have been preserved. its a pain in the butt that you can get funding for a degree in football but for inportant things there is no help
  20. think this is a hoot! busted at the moment with torn knee tendons acording to the doc after a near swing only stopped by foot trapped in tight fork, or i would be butt naked doing the lunge!!! i think it was said earlier that a calander would be class! if a load of house wives with big buns can do it why not a load of arbs with strong scaffold and large roots do the same!! all proceds go to help the hero's. even the girlfriend is into it
  21. i shall look into the online thing but as you say it will be hard getting motivated when you kick the boots and tousers of after another rainy day. anothre prob i have is being based in northern ireland any finals or things like that are usualy based across the pond which is the most expensive stretch of water in the world, when i was at merrist wood it cost me 250 quid to fly home for christmas!!!! Have you done the isa cert arb? studying for it now but seem to think its a bit simple and too american based
  22. have to agree with you mate! big tree take downs are becoming a thing of the past! i spend most of my time now trying to convince clients to preserve the big old boys. love the idea of the degree you have how are you going about it as i probably only have 10 years left in me
  23. i think that as pro climbers we all love the big trees, its what sets us apart from the gardener with a chainsaw in his van who can knock a tree over and hope it goes where he wants it ( no offence to legit gardeners who are as specialised as us arbs at thier own thing ) on the other hand i do love planting, small tree work, stump grinding and all other arb related stuff as its my chosen profession. you have to take the rough with the smooth in this job and be glad you aint stuck in an office with all that heat, free tea and sexy chicks in office skirts. on a serious note though! i do know some guys who i sub in that only like big tree work and as a result i only get in for big tree work. the other guys i get in love it all and as a result get far more work from me. Big climbs are still the best though
  24. any one else tried the falkan AT 235/85/16s? i have them on my 90 and after 4 years they have still over 60% tread left on them. they are pretty smart off road for an AT too, used the 90 plenty of times to pull the 130 out of trouble and its got BFG MTs. good all round tyre in my opinion
