  1. early forties i think, far too young!
  2. A local tree surgeon was killed last night along with one of his crew and thier girlfriend. His name was Robert Newell and ran a good business called County Down Tree Services. Was at his workmates house when they decided to go out for a carry out meal but were involved in a horrible car smash and died instantly by all accounts. He was well respected over here and leaves two kids and a wife. RIP Rab
  3. girlfriend climbs in one and thinks its comfy but has a problem with the leg loops becoming loose and no where to put a clip for hooking up her 192. apart from these few niggles she thinks it great.
  4. love to see a similar aged jap truck do that amount of graft all day! great pics looking for one of those myself to add to the growing collection love the old ones
  5. sorry no pics at the moment. i cut it about three foot of the ground as it has nice flutes which i sort of thought were the valuable bits. i think its juglans nigra its not the common one anyway. got hold of a local saw mill who seem intersted but am still waiting for the call back. cheers anyway guys
  6. had to drop a lovely old walnut the other day as it was starting to fail and there was a house under it so i could think of no way to save it. was just wondering if any one had an idea of the value of the timber? there is one straight length of stem that is 25" diameter tapering to about 20" and 15ft in length. would hate to see it going to fire wood
  7. the stumper worked well!used them for years but they are heavy lumps to move about. funny thing you mention father ted, the house is a rectory
  8. cheers guys! not getting any of the timber unfortunatly as the client is keeping it all. not sure of the make of the grinder, its american an i think it says stumper on it. it the only ones you can hire over here at least near where i work
  9. few pics of the stumps i had to do this morning:001_smile: bit sore in the shoulder department this evening good excuse to open the beers though
  10. thanks for the input guys. i will keep you posted on what the church council decide. i am going to try and get the fenced of area passed. this could be planted out with the replacement trees too and left to develop into a lovely natural woodland. i did a full inspection of the trees before i removed them and the only hollows or cracks where bats could have been were very wet and waterlogged so i was pretty cofident they were clear. hated taking out the beeches but unfortunately people come before trees in this unfair world
  11. we have been working on a great job in the rectory of a local church this week, removing two large diseased beeches and reducing another plus are ment to be reducing this large oak ( pic 1 ). problem is on doing an arieal inspection of the big old girl we found massive cracks and rot on all the major scaffold beams ( rest of pics ). A light reduction i dont think will prevent failure and there is power lines under one of the beams. we thought that if we removed the beam over the lines and then got this generaly unused part of the garden fenced of and let the tree sort its self out would be an intresting and more environmental option than removal. cost is another factor as the church council have to fork up the money. any opinions?
  12. my girlfriend is my business partner and a climber so we dont need el just yet, gettin swamped with big trees at the mo so another climber/groundy would be handy
  13. i got kit and pl with trust for 1600, might have to take on a 2nd climber and they could do employe insurance for another 600. been with them 3 years and no complaints
  14. did electric board work all last year and 90% of the work was thorn hedge reductions. i bought a pair of youngstown anti-vibe xt gloves and they worked a treat. good quality lasted most of the year and would still be going strong if one had not got pulled through the chipper
  15. was thinking that sean. will try making tinder with it tomorrow, ray mears style
  16. not sure what this is. looks like it could be G pfeifferi second pic is of brackets on the other side of this mature beech
  17. swimming goggles. you do look a bit funny but they do the trick and they are light and easy to stash in your pocket
  18. i stayed in the halls and it was a nightmare with all the stupid golfer kids. can face a stern telling off for having a beer in your room too. no booze in the halls.you are pretty cut of out there without a car but there is a bus service a five minute walk from the main gate that will take you to the shops. there are a few good pubs about too, the worplestone hotel is pretty close and good for a feed but can be expensive the cricketers is good for cheap pub grub and friendly too. its a great course, if Jack is still there you will learn a lot from him and the rest of the guys. good luck
  19. hi chaps, can anyone help me id these caps? they are spread over the root plate of a large beech with extensive heartwood decay. they are the only fruiting bodies present on the site and i want to know if they pose a threat to two other mature trees on the same site. there is no crown die back on the beech or sap exudation on the stem. any help would be appreciated
