  1. NEV..out of interest are the Nev that worked for Rylands with Pony tail Dave?
  2. Tony.. It's not the councils I have a problem with, it's usually the staff they employ and the double standards that they allow. With regards to how many trees would fail, 1 would be to many in that location. Would you leave that tree next to a highway? There,s a link to a recent case on another thread on here, which Delga tried to defend and lost. Judges don't like any forseen risk. We agree that the tree could in the long term deal with the decking. Your reference to topping has no bearing, but I would suggest monitoring. using ref to the many trees that have survived the onslaught of tarmac or concrete in many cases installed by a council or utility contractor. If planning was required and the chap did not apply, then he deserves what he gets.A simple phone call could have saved him time and money. Like you say, evidence prior to construction is/was the key.
  3. Back to the days of the FTC (forestry traing council) so here goes. There should be 3 Screws,T,H and L.The first thing to do is turn in the T screw (tick over). Then turn both the other screws fully in. Turn both the L & H screws out 1 turn. That should start any saw that has fuel and a spark. On tick over turn out the L screw until the engine peaks, then turn back 1/4 turn. Rev the saw to full belt and turn out the H screw. When the engine peaks turn back 1/4 turn. All you need to do now is set the T screw to idle speed,IE the saw runs but the chain does not move. You may need to tighten the chain. GOOD LUCK
  4. Firstly I would say the Sycamore does not look worthy of a TPO and its condition warrants removal,so DDD given the risks eg in a back garden. If it is to be retained, then the decking should allow water to leach so I can't see any problems on that side. Just refer the council to street trees that have block paving around or tarmac. The construction method may raise a few ???., but what would the SULE, (safe useful life expectancy)of been had the decking not been installed, not long IMHO. I would do the report. No need to be bias looking at the pics.
  5. Spot on with a doctor. A GP makes very good £££'s. I bought an Echo top handle 7-8 years ago (it's all that was in the shop and I needed something quick). I was going to get a Stihl when it knacked up and I'm still waiting. Been a good saw,not as much power but it does the job and half the price. As for your girl been HOT...I think a pic on arbbirds thread is needed so we can decide....LOL
  6. I have two kids.Girl 14 and son 10. They both know everything about the birds and the bees. Daughter does not want anything to do with boys that involves sex (yet) and my son just wants to go out with the blonde from girls aloud. I could not believe how early they covered the subject at primary school. Having said that it's not a taboo subject now in our house and it's quite nice to know the kids have a very good understanding. It's suprising what the kids learn,by just been around when lads turn up for work and discuss their weekend bender.
  7. Advice does not have to be paid for nor written. Contractors and their staff can give advice without even knowing it. As you say you are a "specialist" so anything you say would be taken in the context that you are more qualified than, a Prudent citizen. Courts will take the view of a prudent citizen and would assume therefore that when,Mrs Smith says "so that tree is now safe" and gets the reply "it should be for a couple of year's, Thats advice.
  8. I have a min charge of £145, thats for the very basics and single tree. No more than 2 hrs inc site visit within 10 miles. Any more is £65 hr and 45p mile travelling. TPO bits we do as part of the overall job. A lot can depend on if you have the contract work as well as the report.

    4x4 insurance?

Been with NFU for years,Mog and trailer only £235. Just sent me my renewal for the Toyota Hi lux double cab 01. £495 with 8 yrs no claims. Tried compare. com cheapest for same cover but with £150 excess instead of £100 was £244. I'm changing I can insure the mog for free with the saving...Crazy,so much for been a loyal customer.
  10. Just weld a cpl of old wheels to container and it's classed as a mobile no planning or if there for 5 yrs, hard luck planners
  11. Won't be binning the 88 on dealers word, will be putting new guts in
  12. 3 saws up and running,£100 so far,not to bad but it's only the smaller ones. Not looking to good with the 088.Think I'll have to buy some new. Got some prices for replacements but trying to work out which way to go. Looks like a new Ms 460 with 25" bar @ £660 inc vat and a Ms 230 with 14" @ £265 inc. Did consider MS 390 with 20" @ £450 but won't do the bigger stuff.
  13. It would be interesting to get some input from stihl as to what or what not to use.
  14. I would be the one to bring in the council especially if the work is pants. Just suppose you do this new work and you manage to comply with all the TPO regs and Bs5837 and the tree shows signs of stress or dying. You could still get tarred with the same brush. It might not be the best time to start playing about in the root zone just after the tree as had works to the crown.
  15. Don't use the premium ones like ulitima, just the bog standard but make sure it's from a good co ,like BP,shell etc
  16. here's my 10 yr old. operators mini 360, drives mog around field. Feck me when I was a kid we only had Tonka toys
  17. Had a problem with saws not starting after re fuelling. Been to local stihl dealer,he's had another 10 machines in the last cpl of days with same problem. He's also had a letter of Honda about same problem and warranty. It would seem that cheap petrol has some chemical that ain't to good for two stokes. says to stick with BP/shell etc not the big boyes to save 3p a ltr. Just wondered if any one else was having probs or if it was just local. Best way to deal with said saws,is to take plug out, pull like crazy and then stick some WD40 in plug hole and then try and start. between me and a mate we have 7 saws inc Stihl 088 (ouch) in with him.Our fuel came from a supermarket.
  18. Arbtalk.....we do what it says on the shirt
  19. Try duggie at Tavistock chain saws. He got some for my 10 yr old and a bargain at £25
  20. 2nd show of hands....I'll give them your tel no steve.lol
  21. Hi all, Just reading about the possible goverment bailout of the car ind and decided to make a comment on the BBC website. Usual stuff, unions don't moan when their going after big pay rise etc,Why help Bank and car,why not Wollies, their jobs more important etc. Within 2 min of sending some researcher is on the phone wanting to know more about our industry. How we are finding the work situation, do we get any help, do we need any help. When I mentioned us all talking on the web,she was very interested because it's not the type of job that ever gets a mention in the media and our views would cover the whole of the UK with a few from further afield. They now want to do an interview on main BBC and or radio. So if you have any PERSONAL views or anyone up for the interview, get on your soap box and start posting.Have not metioned this site Yet and will not until confirmed OK by Steve
  22. Would give Buzzlight chip a call

Hi. Read the post you put up.Yorkshireman seems to have covered the obvious. There all basically the same,Check oil, filters, pump,Hyd motor and at the end the keyway. Admit that the 135 is well underpowered at 27hp, which is why they stopped producing it.

  24. I've used a 7 ton electric for god knows how long.Splits everything we bring back.Works vertiacl, horizontal or at 45%. Women can use it easy, like a washine machine.Push button and off you go,No smelly petrol or where's the choke.forget it,it wont start. Like wise we get quiet a few jobs where the wood stays and the customer hires the splitter off us for the wkend. Came from Richard at fuelwood and I got a dealer rate so paid less than £500.
  25. "In this sense I think the thermal imaging is better describes as a survey tool rather than 'decay detection'" Tks Mister, Use it during your survey, id ones with faults, get out the invasive bits and pieces find the cavity.....and then spend two minutes with the tree officer and an hammer.......lol only joking If it as good as people are reporting then it could be a fantastic piece of kit that may as Bundle says allow us to keep trees within given risk paramiter. One thing that is great is that through Arbtalk we can all get to discuss new advances on a daily basis. We don't just have to wait till the annual show or take the word of some magazine ad or sales guy (no offence Marcus)
