  1. swap from a pro-lite as they cant deal with high chain speeds, swapped my bars on my saws to power match bars as I was getting through a pro-lite every 4days felling
  2. its about time, the industry have been asking for this for the last 12months+ especially with the expected increase in demand for chesnut in planting schemes now ash cant be used. I think its going to be in very high demand this winter as species choice becomes more limited.
  3. yep no problems, as mentioned keep the chain a bit slacker, good set of waterproofs and a bar a good bit longer than you think you need as its nearly impossible to stand where you want to in the river (unless its nice and shallow). I always wore chest waders (non ppe ones) with my chainsaw trousers underneath. Dont wear chainsaw gloves as they are a bigger risk than benefit, grippy gloves if you must but i never wore gloves when cutting in the river. Decent waterproof top and a set of safety glasses under your visor as the spray isnt great to get in your eyes when cutting with a bigger saw. Afterwards put the saw somewhere warm to dry out over night and take the chain, bar and side cover off and give everything a good dose of wd40 even the side of the saw.
  4. I'm not going to get started on the machine. Yes I probably should have had band tracks on but over a long (400mtr+) extraction they make it very slow going considering most of the ride surface is pretty good. I should say a big to Eddie for the assist really as it was properly bogged and I thought it was going to go over sideways at one point had to use the crane to counterbalance it to stop it rolling
  5. Hmmm only just logged on and thought I would have a look at this thread, Eddie
  6. When we have wanted any quantity we have either had to bring it in from further afield, either the South East or got it from Toby Allen in Herefordshire Say It With Wood: Herefordshire Chestnut Fencing

    Echo CS280

I run the older 270 and had also been told by a couple of echo dealers that a 1/4" sprocket wasnt available, You definatly have a 1/4" and thats not the source of the vibration/white finger?
  8. many thanks for all the responses and the PM's I will get round to ringing everyone in the next couple of days, but thanks for all the info and contacts Charlie
  9. Im looking for a long term tracked chipper hire in the North Midlands area, any suggestions where would be best to consider (dont want to be fleeced). Probably looking at 3months hire but only have use 3days a week, If anyone knows of a decent 2nd hand unit such as a GM safetrack I would also consider this if the 2costs are going to be closely matched Cheers
  10. Hi, Just trying to get a contact for a mobile mill near Coventry if anyone has one or knows of one locally. Ideally a bandsaw type (eg woodmizer) or potentially a lucas type if we cant find a local woodmizer. Please drop me a PM with contact info and I will ring you back. many thanks Charlie
  11. Ring your FC woodland area officer is the best way, there have been prosecutions for farmers who have been restoring hedges (under stewardship schemes) charged with illegal felling (where they have exceded the 5cu/mtr limit). I would suggest normally in a small domestic situation you would be excempt, but give the details of size of the woodland area it would be worth asking the question to them. Unless you are going to remove under 5cu/mtrs per calendar quater
  12. try hotels about an hours drive from the show if your in a group or ring the elmia show helpline as they will put you in touch with hotels which still have spaces, bearing in mind a lot of the local hotels book up over 2years in advance of the show, if your on your own I believe there is camping locally but again ringing the show helping would confirm this as they are helpful
  13. I have recently been out to a few woodlands that actually have some decent hardwoods in them, and was wondering if any mills in the midlands are buying hardwood saw logs primarily Ash but also oak and cherry. I am aware of the adverts in FJ Also what are the current specs for cutting to, are 3.7's and 4's going to be acceptable, any help greatly appreciated Cheers Charlie
  14. You can get grants without the management plan until 2014 then it will be a requirement of all Woodland improvement grant applications. There are still pots of money in some regions but all have different targets so if could indicate you location there are people out there that can help give you guidance, but its very much a regional thing so whats goes in terms of funing in West Midlands may not in East Midlands FC region etc. the paperwork is pretty straight forward for EWGS1. Just ensure you have the land registered as mentioned and request the correct maps (this may take several attempts ) and then make sure you follow the guidance for colour the woodland boundaries in. Above all ask your FC woodland officer, as they should tell you what is and isnt available in your area and what the require from you.
  15. Is this on the restocking requirements of the felling license as I didnt think larch monoculture plant was being permitted Re the costing, the biggest scare is going to be gaurding and on an area that size, very expensive for guards and not really ecomonic to fence, could you not use the post harvesting brash to create a dead hedge round the site so that once that rots down the trees will be above deer height in terms of terminal bud damage
  16. Have a go through a load of these, and one you have fully digested them then think about what your going to do, think about getting an FC approved management plan (grants available for doing this, or use the FC template and do your own plan so you know what your trying to acheive) I would say if you have just got the woodland dont do anything for the first year other than walk around it a lot as your view on things will change over the course of a year interms of the management.
  17. Tidy saw that, nearly had a go ourselves, It also made a good bit less than the one that was up in December that was identical
  18. bomb proof bikes, but i would say they are towards the upper value at the starting price already. I bought my first two atvs from farm sales and paid £200 and £250 for them and they only needed an hour or two of fiddling with and a few quids worth of parts to get them running. If i was after a cheap 2wd bike a klf300 would be one of my first choices
  19. Technically you cant touch them
  20. 3 example management plans on the FC website Forestry Commission - Woodland Planning Grant, along with guidance for completing them, if these arent sufficent i have a couple i could forward but i would have to delete all the site details out and tbh it would probably not make a lot of sense once this has happened
  21. I under no circumstances would recommend anyone on the forum go down this route if you want to get forestry training or qualifications, Im not going to get into an open slagging match on this, and have deleted the first response I had put when i saw these posts. If people want more info I will discuss it on a private message. Big J round here most trainers cover hard and softwood felling. The bigger issue on the 30/31 is getting people trained in using the correct equipment such as a timber tape, tongs etc and spend more time focusing on this as this is what really lacks in most newly qualified people i come across, they have never used a tape or tongs. I think most people after the first week should have an idea on tree selection for thinning, if after 5days they havent then maybe they arent cut out for thinning work.
  22. odd, I had run a lot of prolites in the past on nearly all my saws, in the last 8months I havent been at all impressed, I had an old one on a 340husky thats years old and done a lot of work and like you say paint barely off it, but the more recent ones have been naff really rapid wear on rails, nose sprockets seem to have been a really weak point. So i have switch all to powermatch bars now and they are holding up fine. Maybe they had a bad bunch but the last few i had the writing was off the bar after the first couple of trees and then it went down hill from there. It starts getting expensive when your replacing a bar every few days
  23. Dont both with prolites they won't stand upto the speed of the saw. Powermatch all the way, or sugihara. My 560 was going through a prolite every few days in conifer thinning, newer ones seem rubbish compared to how they used to last
