  2. yes it is, and very warm and comfortable it is too
  3. right so its a hybrid black poplar, just bare my original dimensions in mind the bark is really deep and this is the better side of the crack, and sorry i didnt take the photos
  4. one of today's jobs, taking cuttings of a lot of very old and dying bay willows and replanting along the river bank to regrow and help stabilize some rapidly eroding banks
  5. just got a 2nd laptop to stop the arguments about me tying up the computer
  6. is that a car in the bottom left under one of the tops?
  7. i think i saw the pics on here of that, its just the one tree but i suspect its way way more than any of the climbers i know would be capable of,
  8. whats that, your saw is so fast, your back in the truck and off before it hits the deck!
  9. i would prefer for it to be 6 cuts, no notch no direction
  10. i don't know i couldn't reach any of the branches! pics will follow, my colleagues seemed to be fairly confident it was a black from pics etc that were taken last summer,
  11. First off, does anyone know how black pops respond to pollarding especially big veterans? the reason i ask is i have looked at one today (pics to follow) its a beast, at chest height its about 4ft by 7ft, at about 9ft up it splits into two trunks and these have started to split apart with a split running down to about 3ft above the ground , basically there is the possibility of funding to pollard it, its not a safety risk as its well away from any targets, but it would seem a shame to let it fall over, the site has no access except for on foot so a mewp isn't an option, the height was hard to judge but 100ft plus and the two trunks are probably about 3ft dbh just above the main base. oh and just for good measure there are a few cavities in the base so bat survey will be required, but its solid timber not like its going to fall over imminently. basically anyone that fancies a challenge and has nuts the size of watermelons pm me don't worry i think the timber can stay on site! its near Ashbourne in Derbyshire there is space at the site to just drop the tops although im not convinced this would prevent further damage to the base. I will hopefully post pics tomorrow or saturday Charlie
  12. anchor to the tow hitch on your truck that way when your tired your groundy can just back up and lower you
  13. I prefer to see both
  14. thats good reading, cheers for that!
  15. well done for being well set up, i have been ridiculed in the past for filling in all the details on the risk assesments, but i am aware of the risks, about 5yrs ago my brother in law was felling a crack willow, it split up the trunk and hit him, fractured two vertibrates in his neck, air ambulance straight to the local hospital and he has made a full recovery was back out of hospital in under 3wks, also when we have had other incidents on the farm the first responders (we have three within the surrounding 5miles) are generally with you within 5mins last one i hadnt managed to get to the bottom of the farm drive before they were there! well worth a tenner in their pot once a year, especially with our work. keep safe!
  16. just showed my wife this, after she'd finished laughing she said if we ever get divorced it will be because of this site,
  17. is that the same stuff as the aspen guys sell? if not it might be worth speaking to anglo american oils i seem to remember them saying they did bio oil at the APF i did have a leaflet on their products but cant find them anyway their website is http://www.aaoil.co.uk FTR i use stihl bio oils and buy 20ltrs at a time but its still not cheap
  18. that would be great, i havent decided if i want to do the commerial thing yet, as i dont know where i will be in 3years time! but any info is definatly appreciated, it does seem like something i could set up now and reap the rewards in a few years time, even better if its just some pocket money cash from local pubs
  19. pdf is on the other comp will post a link tomorrow, after i have confirmed prices with them, make sure its not a 10year old price list
  20. found a company that does packs of either 1000 (£50) or 5000 plugs, recon with those and one of my colleagues new stihl wood auger we could have some fun then John? its just quite a lead in time isn't it considering some species wont fruit for upto 3yrs but i recon its worth doing on a larger scale, can see the point doing one log and waiting 3yrs! Cheers for the other contacts may well give them a ring for prices, my brother in law sells veg to the local farm shops and pubs so i suspect i wouldnt have a problem off loading any excess produced
  21. Anyone one on here grow their own mushrooms? im considering getting some of the plugs that you drill into lengths of timber to leave out in the woods, Has anyone else done this if so any tips? especially on species to grow, although its looking like being chicken of the woods, oyster and shiitake does anyone know of any decent wholesalers for this as the kits i can find are aimed at a domestic market and will cost about £13 per log which i think is a bit steep really, unless i by the liquid spores, which for the first time out i think is a bit tricky Cheers Charlie
  22. my defender 130 is insured with adrian flux as they were £100 cheaper than NFU, on a commertial policy, as its registered as a commertial not all high street insurers will give me cover
  23. looks to have been quite nasty several people killed by falling trees/branches I didnt hear about this till today, i notice that in one of the pics its the fire service messing about by one of the trees, so i was wondering in other Euro countries do the emergancy services carry out emergancy tree work? or in the UK for than matter, if a big tree comes over on a car (and i can appreciate that speed is essential for them!) do they have a trained operator or do they have to wait for one to get to site? some pics: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/in_pictures/7848913.stm#
  24. i just use paint, click image on the top of the screen then resize/skew then enter about about 50% normally in the first two boxes
  25. just done mine, must try and run up more expenses over the next three months to try and cut the tax down a bit, no rebate had to pay £200
