  1. This could be a good job for someone just leaving school either gcse's or a-levels, i would think there is a good potential to get involved in the veteran trees on the site, One of my relatives used to work on Dunham Massey and the site is incredible, i know its not directly arb related but there is the potential to get training paid for within the job and you do an NVQ along side the job Careership Warden - £12,000 per annum - National Trust
  2. Wiley X | Tactical Changeable - Xl-1 I wear these, the XL-1s as the can be switched from glasses to goggles and i have about 5 sets of lenses for them, they also fit with an outer seal close to your face so you dont get dust getting into your eyes, oakleys they arent but they are good, the poly lenses seem pretty robust as well, i havent scratch mine yet, I mostly use the light adjusting lenses as you dont have to worry about the sun coming in and out they just darken as required,

    first car

i always had peugeots 205's and 106's they are nice and simple easy to work on yourself and relatively bomb proof, i used to have a m reg 106xs it was an awesome car looking at getting another one, was faster accelerating than my golf gti i had, ran great would sit at 90 on the motorways quite happily and was possibly the most go-cart like car i have ever owned, i miss it sorely and wish i have never parted with it
  4. cant find it so i assume its been pulled?
  5. got me right first 5 times but number 6 was wrong! quite freaky though
  6. keep the pile structure random, avoid laying logs one on top of another, basically you want to try and keep it free from draughts so a random structure is good, if air can pass straight through it will dry out internally and this is no good for most inverts and amphibians, if its close to a stream or river had you considered doing a log pile otter holt, which is good fun if you want to get the kids involved as they can help do it (as long as you saw the logs to size first) reguarding the invert pile, its probably worth digging it about 6inchs into the soil to help keep moisture lower down Charlie
  7. I have life time campus bans from 2 universities one for unruly behaviour the other for nicking a cctv camera, which would have worked had i not drunk a lot of aftershock and looked into the camera before having it away police said the footage was very funny as the followed me on the other cameras running away with it wedged down my jumper
  8. i quite often wear googles under my visor, especially if im doing any milling, hence why my visor is up in my avitar picture, the ones i use are uvex ultrasonics, you can get them cheap on fleabay Uvex > Products > Safety Eyewear > Safety Goggles > ultrasonic you may notice they look uncannily like the googles stihl now sell
  9. why do you get lost often
  10. yep it made £255 which is less than the parts would have cost to make one there was a second home made one finished last night, but wasnt very well thought out and would have transfered most the weight onto the atv, there is a cool video on youtube of a home made one, with a hydraulic adjustable axle so you can balance to load correctly, will post a vid later
  11. there was one on ebay today home made that was really well made, but unfortunatly my comp crashed at the vital moment, going to build my own, got to source the bits which are going to come to a couple of hundred quid and get a mate to weld it all together
  12. yes but bearing in mind its a conservation post, which are generally poorly paid and also its assisting the woodlands officer so i would assume a reduced responsibility but it would be an awesome job, just a shame my wife wont move, I assume this person would sit within the ecology department so this represents a reasonable salary for that area of work,

  14. bad as this is, i would say if someone the size of fieldens got done over and thats all they got away with then they were very lucky! they will no doubt appear on ebay in about 12months
  15. Hi, I think you may struggle to get a crane mounted on a ifor type trailer any better than the botex one you describe, mainly due to the extra reinforcing required on the trailer and not exceeding the permited nose weights on the trailer, there have been a few discusions on here over the last 18months about such trailers, but basically i dont think what your after exists, might be worth contacting Chris Shepherd on here (from Riko) and having a chat with him about it, as they do some fast tow forwarding trailers Charlie
  16. random question but the limb is pretty low and has had fracture pruning carried out on it, whats the deal with health and safety on that, is there not a risk that some one could harm themselves on the sharp points? or now that the tree is likely to shed limbs are people being excluded from the area around the tree?
  17. Sorry to bump an old thread, but incase anyone is considering running an ATV for work purposes get insurance quotes first, the insurance premium for my replacement ATV is crazy (with a £500 excess despite being datatagged and ground anchored in a locked building) its more than my business, PL insurance and house insurance combined, and over double my Landy insurance, but then again, its a awesome bit of kit
  18. just be aware that if purchasing something like ArcGIS or MapInfo that you will need to buy your OS maps above and beyond the GIS package, costs Mapinfo as used by Natural England, National Parks, Wildlife Trusts etc is about £1400 per single user, and this wont do 3d maps without additional software, ArcGIS as used by FC, Environment Agency (arcview was phased out in 2004) will cost you 2-3times as much as MapInfo and does have better spatial analysis tools built it, in terms of usability, MapInfo has the edge over Arc, as its more similar to microsofts packages, BUT: the wildcard dont forget if looking at these packages, you can buy a stand alone GIS systems with a mobile ruggised field unit, for little more than MapInfo and that will handle Arc MapInfo CAD and a whole range of file types and can be customised for field surveys of trees (see below picture thats me in it) I have used this package for moorland restoration and tree surveys and its a handy little package (It has also been supplied to National Trust and Fountains for tree survey work)
  19. only ever used .177's for pest control, only .22 i have is an airpistol for dispatching things in cage traps,
  20. when its starting up press F8 (before it starts running windows) and select safe mode, then run your virus scanner and back up any data you need
  21. :crying: dam stag weekends, got three on the trot then 4 weddings on consecutive weekends including the weekend of the AA show, so i probably wont get down to that either, not that i would be able to afford anything by then after buying loads of wedding presents
  22. i would have loved to have come down, but i have a stag do in hampshire maybe next year
  23. if you just want 3d pics over aerial photos then use google earth, but for os data as well then anquet is pretty good, several guys i worked with used it as it was cheap and easy compared to the dedicated computer mapping packages
  24. I would have grabbed that and got it to the local lepidopterist group ASAP, or the NHM it looks potentially like a sphinx moth (not present in the Uk to my knowledge) from the first two pics but the third pic does look more beetle like, certainly not like anything i have come across before, do you carry any tubes for collecting inverts Monkeyd?
  25. logun s16 is a pretty handy tool, lots used in pest control, dont know about the FT use of them, but if they are about £600 which would leave you a couple of hundred for a scope, bipod and pump, but i love my theobens i currently have an older model break barrel and its just so well made and accurate, you could always try the theoben rapids, which have been around for ages like a rapid mfr which would do both rolls well. there is a used logun mkII professional with thumb hole stock on gun trader at the moment, with a moderator and AGS scope for £625
