  1. Do you actually mean Typha as opposed to true bulrush? best bet is a long reach 360 with a rake on it, with a careful operator, glyphosate would be do-able if you have the correct Environment Agency consent and PA6AW qualification (which you would need to get the consent!) you would have to be careful not to spray non target species. You would also need to consider if you have breeding great crested newts in the pond for the timing of any works (including spraying). whats the pond lined with if its clay a decent operator shouldnt find this to much of a problem
  2. depending where you are give chains direct in Burton a ring, they would have all the required in stock, however i would question whether its worth buying measuring calipers for measuring the legth of the cutters.
  3. It was a fantastic event, and very well organised with very knowledgable speakers, well worth the day out
  4. nope its about 8miles east of Stafford, and there is also a site near leek that has the potential to produce some nice oak for this as well. Its always useful to know people who are interested in timber where there can be value added other than just firewood markets.
  5. Is there anyone on here in Staffordshire (or local to Staffs) that may be interested if some timber came on the market for this, there is a block of pure oak woodland that is likily to get thinned in the not to distant future and it would be a shame to see it all go for firewood, so I would like to put to owners in touch with anyone that may be interested. Cheers Charlie
  6. behind his disco, cant have the posts on the trailer as well though, its a hell of a set up having seen what he can do in a day even if hes on his own! here is the finished job 2days later (this stretch is just over 100meters)
  7. this is what the guy who does a bit for me uses, not much use in Mrs Miggins back yard though his fencing is some of the best i have seen
  8. in my experience round here the cheaper fencing contractors are actually the better ones who have invested in proper equipment and are able to do a better job more quickly and efficently so can charge less per meter. (this is agri fencing though not domestic)
  9. no it will be forest craftsperson L10 in the labour section, you may find that if grant funding is being paid the owners will still try and get it for £120/day as this is essentially the 80% of the £150 that is actually paid out
  10. do it based on the FC standard operating costs as a day rate, that way you can prove that your not making it up, also if they have a woodland improvement grant of FC they will be claiming the money for it at a rate of 80% http://www.forestry.gov.uk/pdf/ewgs-on009-standard-costs.pdf/$file/ewgs-on009-standard-costs.pdf
  11. I have a mantec with a flexi pipe as my roof rack has the additional supports down the front of my windscreen so this type is the only one that will fit , They are really well made and easy to fit as it uses existing mounting holes other than the ones on the windscreen which need a pilot hole drilling
  12. did it occur that he may be refering to the rear handled version of the saw?????
  13. I know but the 3 this morning is getting a bit much
  14. yep will be there, you getting a lot of emails from them about it?
  15. Sorry not to meet you guys, I did see you talking at lunch time as i was only a few feet away talking to some people and then I couldnt find you again,
  16.:lol:seriously 5K and the rest those look like 650's on the back end
  17. They are 135hp Jon I love 6910's probably the best deere they ever made, what gearbox is in it? powerquad? I have spent 1000's of hours using them and would love to pick up a tidy one but they all seem to be getting a bit tired now, your one looks in very nice condition though.
  18. you will need a felling license, you will need to contact FC for this, NE will be next to useless as they have been giving duff info on felling for HLS/CSS for ages that has got a few people in legal trouble. HLS doesnt superesed a felling license, if you mention the HLS in the felling license app then FC will contact NE about it. Also dont forget that if its for HLS you shouldnt be felling in bird breeding season and if its selective felling rather than a thinning operation it will need to go on the public register for a month.
  19. I'll be there with one of my colleagues, hopefully its a good day, either that or i will be catching up on some kip
  20. just as a heads up there was one on ebay a while back (feb time) that was ireland, I was highest bidder but reserve wasnt met anyway ebay contacted me saying no to deal with the seller as it was dodgy, a month later same add appeared listed in cornwall. Seem to be a lot cheaper if you buy in Sweden, and a lot more choice
  21. yes and no so technically if your operating the crane stood by the side of the trailer, then yes it should have a detailed inspection. Bascially they come under loler as they lift, however you dont need to get a 12month inspection on dedicated machines (its 12monthly as its not life support such as the 6monthly one on climbing kit), ag conversions could be iffy if you dont have fops and rops (eg alpine tractor etc), you do however need to take into acount points such as the one below purely for backside covering other points to note are The reports and defect one is important where you have multiple operators, we have a booklet that stays with the machines and any servicing and issues are noted and signed off once fixed.
  22. Mike was he from a certain Gloustershire Ag college? sounds like the sort. If he is im sure you have plenty of taunts to use at him
  23. I think your going to be in for a shock if its north west Scotland
  24. hire in a softrac with a jf forager on the front and tipping hopper on the back, or dumpy bag holder so the heather cuttings can be sold for moorland restoration like this I should add this is what the NT and NPA up here run for this purpose, part funded by NE special projects element of a stewardship agreement, on SSSI's
  25. BBC iPlayer - Nature: Series 6: Wood and Water This is a program on woody debris working being done on rivers across the UK, whilst its not to everyones tastes as many people think rivers should be nice and clear of debris and straight etc to prevent flooding. Its a technique thats gaining a lot of interest now in the UK, having being used in the US and Canada for about the last 15years. I have been involved in woody debris work over the last 5years, as Staffordshire and Derbyshire Wildlife Trusts and the wild trout trust have been instrumental in promoting and experimenting with this technique in the UK and i have been fortunate enough to be involved on a lot of these projects and they really are great for a whole range of wildlife. Here is a link to the document they refer to about woody river restoration http://www.fishactive.com/pdfs/Lge_Woody_Debris_and_Rivers_2011.pdf
