  1. This is true to a point but also your average working LR is often pretty old and also get used in challenging conditions. Stuff wears out.. The beauty of the LR is that it is normally repairable failure.
  2. Do you do mainly tree work. I don't think I have ever had 10 weeks lead time. Half my customers baulk when I say 3-4 weeks..
  3. We brought one a few months back, ironically we got it as we process mostly larger rings (we have 10 inch chippers) and found the sawing was costly in time and chains. Not used it much as yet, but runs off the tractor at the same time as the log splitter. We load up the tipper trailer and the logs can be sorted depending on size either to splitter on saw bench. Big stuff can be split into billets then sawn to size. Initial trials seem promising, but it is noisy...

  5. OK how do I make bowl blanks? Are they not milled? Should I leave it to season, should I paint the ends? Then what?

  7. We had one for our tractor but the extra weight restricted what you could lift so never bothered with it.

  10. We have a timberwolf 250 (precursor to the 350) and vermeer 230xl. We tried the TW 350 and the bandit. Liked the TW350 but was lots more £..   11. Did you tick the box that the tree was causing damage or dangerous? Un-tick those and you should be OK (unless it has changed very recently).

  13. I have never had much use out of chainsaw milled timber, I have used a few oak beams I cut to make a climbing wall for the kids, and a sign for our community orchard. I have a bunch of pine boards we cut for a client who seems to have forgotten about them.. and a gun stock sized piece of walnut.. But never found (or looked) a market for any of it. Brought back two lumps of sycamore, the one pictured should have an interesting grain the other similar length (6ft ish) is a clear stem . Is it worth milling, or anything other then firewood? What would you do with it?

  15. If you are an employer happily treating guys as subbies and you get a letter from the hmrc to pay back years of ni contributiona tax etc. Or you have a guy take you to an employment tribunal claiming unpaid holiday pay or even unfair dismissal. you might..

  18. Good post and I agree with what your saying but most freelance/subbie groundies and climbers are not going to pass those tests.. A Climber might get away with it. If they have own kit. But a free lance goundie...? Not sure I would be happy if I had booked fred and he sent his mate, I can't see that happening The OP has been offered to contract "for a while.." Presumably he will be expected to turn up. Don't get me wrong as an employee if your happy with the situation your paying your tax etc, then you nothing to worry about. It's the employer who will get shafted..
  19. Not so. You can be employed to one company and self employed as well. If the HMRC believe you are employed then having a few invoices ain't going to matter. Use their handy tool and it will tell you if it believes you are an employee or not. There are plenty of folk out there with jobs being paid PAYE and self employed at weekends. It is unlikely to make a difference to the employee, the employer should be aware however. Because as I understand it, the employer is the one who will get chased to pay any unpaid taxes etc.. Also an employee could presumably make a fuss and claim employee rights that the employer hasn't been giving the employee, due to the fact they incorrectly thought they were a sub contractor.. and therefore not entitled to them.

  21. It's b*%*cks.. whatever it is. Go to the HMRC site... and stop repeating numbers that some bloke down the pub/on an internet forum told you...
  22. It's only 300 miles.. Land Rovers have been a favoured vehicle for expeditions for about 40 years.. You just plod along, if your off the beaten track it's not even much slower then a more modern vehicle. Although breakdown cover might be a wise investment. Check it is valid however as sometimes you have to have had cover for a certain length of time before it works. So you can't use it to pick up a non runner..
  23. There is no set rule, this 75% of your time is nonsense. As a freelancer I wouldn't worry about it. Your employer has to be concerned as they are the ones who are in the "wrong," (even though you both might like the arrangement) and going to be stung by HMRC if they get checked. Put your details in this as see what it says. https://www.gov.uk/employment-status-indicator We have offered fixed term contracts to our guys who previously would have been kept on as freelancers. Means I pay them less as a daily rate but pay NI and Holiday pay etc..
