  1. Get a 2 ton chipper and you soon learn..
  2. Not sure about the payloads but we have a 6 ton iveco and 3.5 ton Isuzu. Both are decent trucks. It is worth considering the max train weight you are allowed to tow, as if you are on a pre 97 licence the 107 code limits you to a max train weight of 8,250 kilograms.
  3. LR's are WAY more expensive, uncomfortable, less reliable (allegedly) and smaller then other 3.5ton tippers. But they can go off road like little else and will last for ever as you can replace every component and they look great! I would not have one for my main vehicle, but it is invaluable as part of our fleet.
  4. I think they would be to big for that harvester.. It's a pretty straightforward job with the right kit. The site needs to be cleared to allow access for wagons, lorries and tankers. They are an established client so would like to sort it for them..
  5. I have been asked to quote to fell and grind the stumps of 198 poplars in Coalville. They have approx 35-45 DBH and probably 18-20m tall, close grown Flatish ground access OK. Needs doing in the next couple of months. We are booked up and this is forestry rather them arb which is what we do. Any one interested. Drop me an email. [email protected]
  6. Full time post available..
  7. I can't face trawling the 45 pages of the arb digger thread... What is the optimum size digger for aiding the chipping of a load of big trees. We have a loader tractor and 10 inch chippers. I am thinking a 3 ton machine. I don't want it to be too unwieldy and smash up the chippers. Advice please..
  8. One of my lads car wouldn't start this morning.. He normally picks up another of the lads.... I am therefore in a position of having a tractor driver and groundie with no climber.. and the other team of 4 guys having to wait for their groundie to turn up as he is now late. He then is off with me for being short with him on the phone..
  9. We have a large quantity of willow and poplar (20 big trees) being removed. Last time we did a big job like this we brought in a whole tree chipper, forwarder and digger with shears. This time we have our own 10 inch chipper so going to chip up to 10 inches ourselves. This means we will have a lot of timber. I believe Heartwood took out some big poplars and sold the timber anyone know to who? Thanks..
  10. We have at least three weeks of work with LOTS of chipping. I have never used a digger with grab but would be interested to try one with an operator or without.. for feeding our 10 inch chippers.. I am guessing a 2-3 ton machine would be ideal.. ? If you have one or know of one in the Nottingham, Derby Loughborough area let me know.. [email protected]
  11. Where do folk look for arb jobs? I am not having the number of replies expected from arbtalk.. Considering the apparent quantities being turned out by colleges.. arbjobs.com earborist.com I imagine answers on this forum will obviously be rather biased, but I guess not all arbs are on here... so where is the best place to find them...
  12. FULL TIME POST AVAILABLE - We are looking for a climber/team leader to join our team full time. Immediate start! Tickets required. Either an older (Pre97 licence advantage), climber willing to bring our young climbers on. or an experienced climber, wanting to join a high quality firm. Apologies to those I have not replied to in the past but I went away. I intend to reply to all but drop me another line if you have not heard from me. [email protected] 01332 875 869
  13. Not sure if it shows the change in economy as many lots of other factors, advertising, repeat customers etc.. What would be more interesting is then comparing conversion rates and advertising spend.. I have checked mine.. (not including council work) and not sure I have the time to look up my advertising spend. I might if others do to compare against.. My conversion rates seem pretty stable dropping a bit in 2010 2011? Pretty similar.. Year - Quotes - conversion rate 2014 - 500 - 0.6 2013 - 573 - 0.69 2012 - 501 - 0.64 2011 - 421 - 0.55 2010 - 458 - 0.57 2009 - 370 - 0.59 2008 - 298 - 0.63 2007 - 333 - 0.68 2006 - 278 - 0.67 2005 - 148 - 0.62 2004 - 95 - 0.64
  14. If you are doing 1000 quotes a year shouldn't you be writing up your 10,000th quote?
  15. Volume 2 of biddles Tree root damage to buildings rates as the most unreadable book I have ever had the misfortune to try and read...
  16. Berlingo, Partner, Kangoo or VW Caddy
  17. This was the beech that nearly dropped a limb of one of my guys while hedge cutting earlier in the week. The limb that failed obviously had issues, however the concern is now the for the 12inch horizontal limb that reaches over the play area (they have 240 kids there on Tuesday..). The limb has no obvious defects but the tree now has history.. Option 1. do nothing Option 2. remove limb Option 3. reduce/end weight limb Option 4. install cable brace to catch limb in the unlikely event of it failing..
  18. Not sure if I agree with this. I guess it depends what you mean by "good." Better to find a different trade if you want to get rich.. If you want a lifestyle job, stick with arb.
  19. The willow nothing of note, 6 inch diameter limb 7m long snapped about 3m along fairly horizontal branch. It had lost a similar limb about 2 weeks back. Neighbours reported a loud crack like a fire work. The beech I did not see myself but the lads have got some photo's. Pics of the HC, neither huge limbs but strange as they were so close, I thought at first someone had cut the branches from one and dragged it under the other. There is obvious dysfunction in the bigger one but nothing on the smaller one.
  20. I looked at 4 cases of presumed SLD today, one willow dropped a limb in the night, two horse chestnuts within 20ft of each other and a beech that dropped while my lads were trimming a hedge nearby..!
  21. Do you think this the likely cause of this? 20 or so big pops pretty defoliated..
  22. Thanks, always nice to have a second opinion that agrees with you.
  23. Can I get a second opinion from you fungi lovers.. Found at the base of a healthy poplar. Corpinus micaceus or Glistening Ink-cap? If it isn't in POTHAM I have no idea..
  24. I disagree. The diesel does over 50 mpg can tow a 1200kg braked trailer. It wouldn't be a main truck, but as a quote vehicle or a freelance climber a great little truck. I couldn't find any van/pick up 4x4's on the market that are comparable. (I do now have a caddy van that I am happy with however:001_smile:)
