  1. Our old TD5 is starting to rot.. There are holes starting to appear in the chassis. Do people think it is worth a chassis swap.. Its a low mileage under 100K and we only use it as a back up or when 4x4 is required.. Is it worth spending £1850 on a galvanised chassis, and another £2000 to fit it..? or should we sell it and let some other mug do it..? It is a 16 year old vehicle.. That lets face it was never very refined... But it is forever repairable.. Can you get a non galvanised replacement chassis? I could not find any on a quick web search.. If so are they cheaper? I know a galvanised would last for longer but the standard one has lasted 16 years and I reckon that would be plenty long enough for me.. Opinions ..
  2. Its not the value that caused me and I would guess the others, who replied comments.. It's the thought that someone thinks its a days wage.
  3. It might, but I don't see a big issue of a trailer.. Unless you need to tow something else..
  4. Having a 4x4 on the fleet is often usefull. But always they are also a bit of a compromise. We used to have a land cruiser van that was used for towing and quoting duties. I loved it but worked out it was costing about £1000 a year more in fuel then a small van would.. We currently have a vw caddy which works ok to tow the hb20 and small chipper if needed.. but We have a 130 tipper so have the 4x4 covered. We also have taillifts on a couple of our tippers so you can on small jobs load it on the back that way. Vehicles are always a compromise and the best option one day might not be the next...
  5. Canopy Tree Services need some temporary tree workers, possibly leading to permanent ground or climbing staff, full, part time or free lance positions available. We are an AAAC based in Draycott DE72 3NX - bus routes from Derby and Nottingham.. Send me a CV: [email protected] 0797 032 5361
  6. I am fairly sure I quoted to pollard that tree
  7. The flat rate works really well, we have had to move to the full rate and it is a PITA.
  8. Same with birds, you can shoot pigeons, but don't disturb their nest..
  9. We have a school site with a strip of land consisting of a neglected hedge and over grown area, The residents and school want to reduce the hedge and cut back the brambles. There is however a badger sett in the area, I have yet to see the ecologists report but apparently it says works can be undertaken up June until December. Anyone had experience working around badgers.. ?
  10. Last time I was struggling to get low skilled staff to get hedges trimmed for a contract I used Indeed.co.uk I put a free add for 2 weeks temporary employment and got loads of replies. Some better than others.. Some foreign but most not.
  11. I remember (I think from on here) someone had a document they had produced to do with tree surveys for scout camps. I can't find it.. but have been asked to do a hazard survey at a scout camp and thought it might be useful. Can any one remember the document and point me in the right direction? Cheers
  12. I think there was a lot of pain after the subsidies were cut, with lots of farms going under. Not necessarily a bad thing in the long run however.
  13. It is stable but if you try to lift something too heavy it lifts the tractor..
  14. We have one that we attach to a tractor.. at full reach 5.1m it can lift the tractors wheels off the ground if you are not careful.
  15. i am in the same situation, and did a search on here and someone recommended Joist. It seems OK, it is free.. To be honest I have done a few quotes with it and gone back to using word..
  16. I don't think it is semantics, the procedure may be the same in that you use the planning portal, but the outcome is different.. Clients have had letters from TO's saying things like, "they can't fell but can reduce" and even "we have not had time to make a decision you can complain etc etc..." The tree is NOT TPO'd, so it's nonsense... A 211 is a notification.. Give them 6 weeks if the TO does not TPO then crack on... You don't need permission if they have not replied, crack on..
  17. NO! You do NOT need permission but you do need to give a 211 notice... The number of TO's who tell folk they need permission, even sending letters giving them permission:biggrin: to do this or that... It winds me up ..
  18. You do NOT need permission but you DO need to notify the council with a 211 notice if it is above the 75mm DBH Exceptions relating to section 211 notices | Planning Practice Guidance

Cost would NOT be an issue, if we all had to do it, we would just pass that on to the customer... As billy said, it is a 12 week inspection, not a bad thing and ensures your truck is in good condition.. We to run 3.5 ton trucks and normally send multiple trucks to big jobs..

We have been having this discussion on this forum for over 10 years. 3.5 ton trucks are not suitable for (most) tree work. (I have 4 including the LR and a 6 toner). But still most outfits run them and it is rare for people to get done. If the police/VOSA were more proactive we would all have to use 6 ton trucks. I am not sure that wouldn't be a bad thing. They are more suitable, and you wouldn't have this bizarre system we have at the moment where trucks are made that shouldn't legally be used. The o licence is not a major effort.. Getting a C1+E licence does not look that difficult and if everyone needed one it would become the norm. What would be a worse offence driving overloaded or not having an operators licence? I know which is more dangerous..

Interesting what you say about auto gearbox as we have 2 older 3.5 ton Ivecos, the crewcab does not like towing our 2.2ton chipper and has gone though a couple of clutches.. I think you might be surprised what your legal payload isn't..
  23. Yes it is Amber Valley. I could post it, but it's just another thing to do. I am probably doing 2 or 3 TPO/conservation area notices a week, most are pointless wastes of time anyway as I will normally specifying works the TO will agree with. In this case the TO has been out onsite and told the client what he should apply to do... I have also been getting the completion certificates.... Which I also forget to send.
