  1. It's putting them back up when they are most useful...
  2. £700 for a 2 man team in Norfolk I imagine would be a great figure..
  3. Does anyone else think bats are over protected. Don't get me wrong, I am a big bat fan, have been a member of a local bat group, mist netted for them, one of my modules at university was on bats, I own a bat detector and did the bat awareness course years ago.. But I can take the dog for a walk on a summer evening and stand around and spot numerous bats. Regularly see them in the back garden. My brothers house has a roost in his roof and my Mum gets them in her garden in London.. Pipistrelles are very common.... But they are afforded the same level of protection as much rarer species..?
  4. I was told the cost to clean them to prevent MRSA is more then the cost of a new pair.
  5. Surely we would have had to have a period of sun.. Did we have a summer last year? It was reduced in May 14, good regrowth in 2015, small amount of DW removed in Dec 15. I have not had a look close up at the trunk yet.
  6. We did a "fairly" sympathetic reduction to a big sycamore in 2014, it had become exposed after a neighbouring beech tree had fallen down and a neighbour who lives under it was complaining allot. We were called back to take some DW out earlier in the year but since then it has rapidly declined. I have no evidence but it was in good health and a whiny neighbour was making lots of noise. Is there anyway to indicate it might be poisoning or has the tree just not responded to the reduction..?
  7. Do you do much domestic? Many of my domestic clients baulk at a 2 week wait.. The commercial guys want everything done yesterday.. I start to panic if i have more than 5 weeks in the diary... or less then 2..
  8. I reckon 3 is a good number for most jobs, especially if you have 2 trucks. Employees can be a right pain.. but a necessity.. Especially if you don't want to be on the tools in your later years.. One thing to be aware of is that they are never as efficient as you, never look after kit as well and it's never their fault .. Many will just get really useful and then quit and start up as competition.. Another thing to remember is that if you are doing more jobs, there is more paperwork, which means you spend less time doing the stuff you probably got into tree work for and more at a computer. Efficiency also drops off massively when you are no longer on site.. Free lancers can be great but expensive. I have lots I can call on, but you have book them in advance as the good ones are often busy. You are not committed to them when it goes quiet. With lots of employees it can get stress full if you have a big wage bill and no work or a big job that doesn't pay for months.. I recently put an add for temporary ground workers on indeed.co.uk to help get through hedge cutting and epicormic for the council, the regular guys hate it and it can drag on and on... I must have had 20 or 30 applicants.. I employed 4 guys for 2 weeks and have knocked most of it out now.. Mind you one did manage to cut his arm with a hedge cutter and get 9 stitches...
  9. It is a hedge/group of trees I am dealing with, protected by a TPO. I started the thread for discussion as it made me think.. The client called it a hedge and some others would call it a hedge and so should they have been TPO'd? The outcome of the discussion makes no difference to my actions but makes an interesting discussion.
  10. Sorry, Is my recollection correct? you can't TPO a hedge? If so then the thread is valid and we can discuss at to if it is a hedge or a linear tree feature and when one becomes another?
  11. If I recall correctly hedges cannot be protected by a tpo. These have been. If Kevin is correct and hedges can be subject to a tpo then the thread has corrected my assumption. If my assumption that hedges can't be tpod is correct then it is a point to discuss. Or not if your not interested.
  12. Some info on this thread. My client was very pleased with what we did with the walk behind Ferrari... We did have to explain it to the accountant mind you.. http://arbtalk.co.uk/forum/forestry-woodland-management/99644-clearing-ground-layer-understory-small-wood.html
  13. Is this a hedge? If you answer yes should they be covered by a TPO?
  14. We are about 40 miles away but have lots going for free if you can load or willing to pay for loading.. and take it away.. DE72 3NX Call Steve 0778 691 6103
  15. Tree Roots in the built environment p387 mentions leaving a void, or back filling with gravel and/or foam or sand to provide expansion space.. Any one done this?
  16. I am sure I have seen a product that produces a void and allows roots to expand.. But I cant remember what is was called...? I might be thinking about a biodegradable void former.. Used when building on piles.. http://www.barrelltreecare.co.uk/case-studies/BuildingsNearTrees.pdf
  17. I have been using DMM Alpine harnesses for years with mine. http://arbtalk.co.uk/forum/general-chat/27989-getting-cheaper-contract-climber-rates.html
  18. The client doesn't want gravel. They want the block paving put back flat...
  19. I've had 2 plates put in my shoulder and one taken out.. I Think the aesthetic was the worst part. Made me feel ill for a week or so after.. Although going to Alton towers a few days after one of the ops probably wasn't a good idea.
  20. I really would NOT want to risk destabilising the trees... This is the view from the other side of the wall. Felling is NOT an option...
  21. The other side of the wall is a road, I would not want to prune/damage any roots this side.
  22. I have a client with a block paving drive. The TPO'd trees are disrupting their block paving. What is the best way to redo the drive and prevent it happening again? My initial thoughts were to use a cellular confinement system, such as cell web that should create a void?.. Any thoughts..?
  23. We often take both our stump grinders on the tipper trailer. I am sure there would be room for a chipper and the HB20.
