  1. Anyone else going to Chris Cardell's event in Manchester tomorrow? Chris Cardell | Spend One Day with Chris Cardell
  2. Ha. I agree. In my experience the more paperwork a commercial client needs the slower they are to pay. Private customers are defo the way to go!
  3. Al, it doesn't make any difference to you, but it would to the main contractor. If the main contractor is on flat rate he can't claim back the vat you're charging him. So a £150 a day subbie becomes a £180 cost to the main contractor if the main contractor is on flat rate.
  4. No way round it. Make sure the companies using you are not on the vat flat rate scheme. If they are you will cost them more, in the same way as if they weren't vat registered. If they are vat reg, and not on the flat rate scheme, you should go on it.
  5. arbogrunt, if you want some web traffic straight away go for google adwords. you can get your website to the top of the page within 10 mins of setting it up. also, facebook ads on the right hand side are great for targeting people who live exactly where you want to work and are of an age where they could own a tree. i.e. not 25 or younger. If it needs to be free, go for Google Maps with a shed load of reviews.
  6. I used to get this happen a lot. For the last few years though we've had a selection of before and after pictures of our reductions on the website and in the booklets we hand out. If a tree owner contacts us now, they know what to expect, so only people who appreciate a nice reduction ever contact us. Hatchet types don't bother calling because they can see we don't offer that as an option. This method may help you avoid a similar situation in the future?
  7. Can't talk for anyone else but I'm talking about two guys who know what they're doing and are on proper money so they are motivated to work effeciently.
  8. 2 man team with a trailer, let alone a chipper, should be doing 600 inc vat a day.
  9. Rainer has it sorted on that site. I put a load in the car boot after work each day.
  10. I think he's right. Reciprocal links are best avoided. Clicks to your site can also do more harm than good if it's a very short one-page visit.
  11. Quite a few posters are saying that they run a real effecient crew so they can be more expensive by the hour but cheaper for the whole job. And that's great. But it is possible to win jobs when you are plain and simple, outright dearer than other firms on every job. Time after time. Might sound unlikely - I remember when I didn't believe it - but honestly it is doable. If you run an effecient crew, on top of charging the most, well your life is going to be so much easier.
  12. Maybe someone mentions this earlier in the thread but there is another way of increasing turnover without having to run around organising two teams. I just have one 7.5 ton truck and one 12 inch chipper. Two other climbers, and two groundies. (All subbies with their own transport.) We all go to each job but two or three guys will set off to the next job at raking / blowing / collecting cheque time. By the time I get there in the truck any cars that were in the way have been moved, someone is already up a tree working away and it all rolls on to the next job.
  13. I traded in our Vermeer 1000xl earlier this year. I got the same again for the third time. It's obviously a great chipper for big all-day jobs, but even for little £250 jobs it saves time. I think the safety re-start buttons are slightly out of reach so you don't accidentally knock them back on if you were to get dragged into the chipper. And the curtains stop the odd lump of chip from flying back out at you.. or any passers by.
  14. Our site is Tree Surgeon Stockport If you have Google Analytics this may be of interest: 9 April to 9 May, 366 visits (305 unique visits) 3.78 pages per visit Average visit duration 1min 44secs
  15. I like Stephen's idea of getting paid upfront. Forget deposits. Full amount. If someone books us in for tree pruning on Monday afternoon that's the point at which the money should be paid I reckon. They just bought us for Monday afternoon. I'm not sure how to ask yet but I'm sure it could be done.
  16. £400 including vat is well under £500. For that, it would look terrific and everything tidied up. You wouldn't get that price walking in off the street but if they've seen pictures of your work or you've been personally referred by a friend then that price is easily winnable. Customers are willing to pay more for the reassurance that their tree project won't lead to a load of hassle, damage or bad feeling. I doubt anyone who owns a house like that always just buys the cheapest stuff.
  17. I'd say 25% reduction. £400 including vat.
  18. If we can get that in Manchester you must be able to get that in west sussex!
  19. 30% reduction. It'll look great. 3 hours tops. Do it again in 5 years. Everything taken away and left super-tidy. £400 including vat.
  20. Conkers, if you're more into domestic tree work maybe have a look at Checkatrade.com. £490 a year. Takes about 20 mins to do the paperwork if you have all the basic stuff. Very effective for turning quotes into work. Nick Bailey Tree Services Ltd Customer Reviews. Working in Manchester, Stockport, Sale, Cheadle, Altrincham, Cheshire, Lancashire
  21. That's the best way I reckon. Nothing in writing. No terms and conditions. Open ended quotes. Pay when you want. Everything built on trust and respect. If you can get it like that its a dream. Regards pricing, in my experience people stop messing you about as soon as you stop trying to be cheap.
  22. I would hate to be in a position where any gift was needed to keep a customer. It's risky to rely on work from a small number of customers. Relying on one or two customers or contracts must be stressful I would have thought.
