  5. NickB, I appreciate your point about journalists not being that interested unless its negative, but I think if the Arb Assoc wants to get good tree work on TV it needs to deliver its own interesting stories. Journalists and TV producers will usually show anything if all the work`s been done for them.
  6. Wouldn`t the Arb Assoc be better off getting good tree work shown on TV, rather than involving itself in some kind of rogue trader witch-hunt?
  7. Really good. Look after it and it will serve you well. I thought you couldn`t buy 935s anymore. Is it a used one? You`ll love it, and vermeer uk are suberb for any after sales back-up. You made a good choice 18 Stoner, but get saving for a 1000!
  8. Me too! I`ve got a 1000xl. Its the second one I`ve had. 935 before that. I wouldn`t consider any other make of chipper.
  9. BT told me that they are supposed to come and take lines down for tree work or similar and then put them back up. This is too expensive so they only fix what actually gets broke. Because of this, they don`t bother chasing payment.
  10. I don`t want to get into root pruning! Forget about foundations then, what about a shed or a fence?
  11. Thanks guys, that`s helpful. Based on that article the current thinking seems to be that reductions won`t make any difference after the first year of pruning. The tree won`t kill off its own roots because it`ll need them again to start growing faster, and with bigger leaves, and with more stomata. Thus, the transpiration rate / taking-up of water out of the shrinkable clays will soon be no different than if the tree had been left alone. Only option is to fell it. But not to worry because there`s loads of trees. What would you think to this statement: `Providing the tree reduction is not too drastic, say 25% maximum, if you prune a tree to keep it at a certain size, the roots will generally be kept in check. Imagine a bonsai tree - it does not matter how old the tree is, as long as the tree is kept trimmed to a certain size, the roots will remain in its dish. They will not carry on growing down under the foundations of your house!`
  12. `If you prune a tree back to a certain size the roots will die back accordingly.` Is that more or less true?
  13. I just seen the first 10 seconds. Did he really lift the gob piece off the bar with his fingers with no chain brake on. Maybe just tilt the bar back and let it slide off.
  14. Strange? It doesn`t even come close.
  15. Dave, this is the starter kit for beginners: LiveLeak.com - crane riding dare devil
  16. This crane vid is also on that website: LiveLeak.com - The Crane Swing
  17. This is how HMRC probably see it: Arb, trees. Forestry, trees. Forestry it is. And it`s 1% lower than `Other`.
  18. A customer said to us, `Don`t let all that mess bother you, he only eats chicken and vegetables.` I did a quote once and picked up a load while out in the back garden. On the way back through the house I`d managed to lose most of it along the hallway carpet.
  19. Cousin jack, go to Home page. User cp. Edit signature.
  20. Tim trained me for my NPTC units when I started out. Top man and a very good teacher.
  21. Good work, tommer9. Great post.
  22. I`m joking. ok.
  23. Its nearly all cash, so I can forget about paying the vat and my accountant tells me my tax bill will be lower.
  24. Stevie, I admire your decision to make big changes in the way you work your business and it is clear you`re having a blast. I was cornered into making drastic changes myself about this time last year and it has worked out better than I thought possible. My point is, if anyone`s business isn`t working out like they imagined, don`t just trudge along, make the changes you know you need to make.
  25. Stevie, I wasn`t suggesting you didn`t know what profits were, I just wanted to be clear. Keeping profits to a minimum to pay less tax is one way to run a business but I get the impression from other posters that profit was important. This is not referring to you in any way, but for some people its a lifestyle thing. Therefore, profits are not top priority.
