  1. Think I read a mention of this in another thread...Anyone from here involved/attending.. Really looking forward to an interesting and informative day..
  2. Ahh the old "classic"...Buncefield reduction... Except perhaps not quite as heroic.. Sorry mate, I know you had your reasons...Could turn into a sweet pollard or maybe you could just try killing it for habitat..
  3. Really enjoyed watching the way they worked the wood ....and I felt his pain as it hung up...but quality use of expletives and technique seemed to get it down without too much stress
  4. A bigger cock up might have been turning up to this site on Wednesday to find a cut down stump and some fairly recent sawdust ...but I wouldn't know anything about that ...
  5. PS got me too...was thinking you had some real neat curve cutting skills there ...mm perfect - Glad I don't now have to attempt to replicate that standard of neatness....Thought it was a MEWP and hedge cutter job On topic though I agree with Lee's primary approach of mulching and a little tlc....think the "sanitised" environment is the main cause of lowered resistance. I don't think reduction is necessary until the tips start to become affected and dieback or reduced annual increments are noted. It looks like it is still in pretty good nick apart from fb's evident. We do some work on similar estates populated with mature oaks but not seen much in the way of funghi yet...still early days for me though
  6. Guilty!! Looks like you've seen some action John ...for me its VW's but I would love a Caterham too for pure unadulterated driving ..
  7. Spent today felling the stumps on a row of coppiced sycamores completed with included metal fence, barb wire, decades of metallic rubbish dumped by the neighbours - light fitting, mattresses, asorted odd metal bars. Also on site was ivy everywhere and some lovely strangly hollies that were to be retained Throttle trigger snapped off the 26....tentatively attempted to continue with 020 but gave up as the chain jammed on the second stump... Decided to call it a day - packed up loaded van etc before it got stuck on clients lawn and needed a tow out before mashing the lawn anymore!! Hope that makes you feel a bit better mate - think it was a bad day for it today... Still its alright now and hopefully tomorrow willl just be much better all round
  8. Just 15 minutes down the road from me....In the village where my Grandad was cremated last Christmas...before I decided to up sticks and come down here... Greatest sympathy for all who knew him. I will endeavour to find out some facts about this tragedy and offer respects where appropriate. Very saddened by this news..
  9. Come and have a go if you think you're Arb enough!! ... Maybe on the back ?? Might get some unwanted attention to but thought I would share ... Another: F*ck Politics lets Arbtalk Philosophicle: Where Trees Are Life ..
  10. Draw was fun...and chat was a laugh... Thanks to all who contributed and worked to make the raffle happen again this year ....Just got to keep my fingers crossed until next year now
  11. Could be James was his name (I think) and he was completing his ND the same time as me last year - Let me know if I can help with further details
  12. I met a guy who had benefitted from this charitable organisation and used to speak on their behalf at fund raising events. All I can say is that to see what this guy has gone onto achieve with their help is amazing - and the sincerity with which he speaks on their behalf is enough to convince me that this one very worthy organisation!! I am very glad to help
  13. Agreed Ed - nicely put!! Bad predicament Dean - maybe ask Mr Oddie ?? Could be some positive PR for the Brewery and maybe the neighbours would like to star on TV, with one of the Countries premier twitchers ??
  14. Yup! They have but from their point of view - unseen what else could they reasonably offer?? Larry, if you want to, and you CAN, then you will - having said this not everyone has your progression at heart so proper development is generally self driven. Allow yourself to develop at your own pace and do not underestimate the importance of doing the relatively mundane tasks properly. A said eyes and ears!! As ex-services though I am sure this is integral to your approach anyway, best of luck and remember trees have feelings
  15. Nice sounds as the stem lands...

Good saws - depends really what you want it for ?? Firewood = ok, As a saw to get started on then also ok .. I would guess at paying about £200 - 250 for a decent one

  24. 088 with 36 " bar is indeed sweet and a bigger bar is useful for Larger stems
