  1. Good post. Maybe we should have a timber thread in the forestry forum?
  2. Mine too, although he gets a kick up the arse when I catch him at it...
  3. Yes, drill the stems and install 10mm stainless bolts. The 2 tiny holes will be far less invasive / damaging than resting the limbs on padding.
  4. NO! Fabric straps will cause mucho cambium damage... I had to install many of svensk tradvards padded cable braces in the '90's, and do checks on old ones. the amount of cambium damage from the fabric was horrendous. Far better to cross bolt than have any kind of padding pressing on the cambium.
  5. Use oak or sweet chestnut, and have steel yokes made. then cross bolt the props into place using stainless bolts.
  6. Saw Lloyd cole at our local venue a few years ago, excellent gig. My favourite - [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jA5QpigkT0E[/ame]
  7. We cut a block of sycamore 2 years ago, and the whole lot went for firewood. I was disgusted, as a lot of it was nice quality.
  8. I remember that Spear tune. wer'nt kurt and boy george discussing uganda? never been much of a levelers fan, but that is a cool tune.
  9. That was as low as it went.... Leon is 4 1/2 now. just getting to grips with handleing a 395...
  10. Bye-bye old sycamore! this one was sitting right atop Offa's dyke, and although sound at the base, was complete mush at about 15 ft up.
  11. I think what Yanks call a sycamore is what we call a London Plane. And they are truly wonderfull trees. Sycamore makes a great comerciall crop tree, apart from the problem that squirrels destroy the new growth. having said that, I wouldent particularly choose to plant them in my garden.
  12. Reg, great work as allways. I noticed the size of the lifts increased as the day went by - I often fnd I do the same thing, especially with big fluffy pops like that one. 90% of my crane jobs have been with a 35tonne. Ideal for tree work. Lee, we have always done a contract hire with the crane. Your talking about a contract lift, which is usually x4 more expensive, and uneconomic for treework.
  13. Not yet - the last communication had with Lasco, they promised to send me a price list. I'll email them again.

    Gaffs?

Whats wrong with climbing in stilettos? I learnt how to climb with long gaffs, and climbed on nothing else for years. I have been trying shorts, but still prefer long gaffs..
  16. He'll have handled the appeal case for the office of the Dpm, having the final say.
  17. Dht...?
  18. I usually take delight in dropping the top as big as possible... [ame] [/ame]
  19. DED hit us in the seventy's. wiped out about 3 million elm trees in the UK.
  20. cant let this thread die on such a stupid post. Heres some more recent pics of moving the timber. Bought a new toy...
  21. Sleep on tight Sleep on tight, til the sunlight Sleep on tight, til the sunlight burns you happy Til the sunlight burns you happy, till the sunlight burns a happy hole in Your heart
  22. Heaven forbid!
  23. Fwiw, Peter has built a very tidy chip box on the back of his transit using plywood. He's used the coated stuff they use for trailer beds.
  24. Sounds like a DIY instant pikey kit
  25. Some more thievery for Pete and Leon, featuring Emilia Torrini [ame] [/ame]
