  1. As for axle diff Nige, definately rear diff first. As said its usually the rear axle carrying most weight, therefore possibility of most traction if locked.

  4. As a follower of landys in general, they do have many down sides, BUT, everyone has different requirements, so choice is for the individual. Only a small point, but its a common misconception about the diff lock on a defender. The standard diff lock only locks the diff between the axles that enables constant 4WD, it does not lock the axles themselves. Technically, it is no more efficient than a Hi Lux etc when you engage 4WD.

  6. Main dealer could give you shock also John, worth asking for a quote though. Try and look for a land rover "specialist" when on your travels. These guys are usually landy enthusiasts anyway, will have worked on many many before and will be able to charge less than the main dealer. Will be great if you can find one like we have locally.
  7. Oh, and as for the tunnel damage John, it can happen as i think its a common thing to remove it for a gear box out, but as for not admitting to it, very naughty!

Only reason i ask was, sometimes a general garage can be great at general cars, they can obviously do work on land rovers, but what i have found is the guys who specialise in land rovers know their way around them a little better, therefore might not need to put in the labour time doing such as clutch jobs. Hope that makes sense!

If i could be bold enough to give my opinion(speaking from recent experience), the hastle connected to ag tax, and if you are happier for the quad to be MOT'd, for the £65(or so) per year road tax i think i would forget the ag road tax! That way you can go to the shops, the pub, even go for a sunday ride out on it, it wouldnt matter, and still use it for dragging timber and brash:thumbup1:

  18. Depending what the vehicle is named as on the log book will help, ie "tractor" "motorcycle" "land rover" A quad does not fall in the category of "tractor" because it is not solely designed for work on land. It therefore falls under category of limited use, therefore has the 1.6km limitation.
  19. Believe me Charlieh, I HAVE SEEN the relevant paperwork at VOSA, and IT IS 1.6km from one place of work or field, to another. Only exceptions are specialist vehicles such as combine harvesters, tractors, steam engines, and mowing machines.

  21. Ok, I know I will get shot down for this one, BUT, be very, very careful! I have recently looked into this, and the law has changed. YOU CAN ONLY TRAVEL UPTO 1.6km FROM ONE PLACE OF WORK TO ANOTHER WITH AGRI REGISTERED VEHICLES Shoot me down, slag me off, do what you like- i dont care- but i would seriously advise checking with DVLA first, I have, also with VOSA, same answer!

  24. Going back to Davids origional requirements, first comes staff and tools. My double cab can seat 6 legally, although i believe its now only 5 as the lap belt has been stopped for new vehicles. I believe if you are not travelling great distances with 4 or 5 burly blokes in, as i believe David wont be, i cant see the comfort thing being a big issue. As for tools, either 110 or 130 can be well kitted out with a variety of back boxes, roof racks, winches etc. As for a tipper, possibly in your case leave it to a trailer, it sounds like the back is more valuable as tool carrying. Trailer manufacturers, least depreciation Ifor, but there are many other good builders around now. Some good deals around at the moment too! I think the rest of your list seems to be previously well covered. The argument of for or against landys will go on forever, and i dare say they will continue to have a massive following. The land rover still seems to be the one of choice for all the utilities, getting them kitted out with all sorts and carrying crews. A thing that probably wont concern you much David, but worth saying is, they are probably the best 4x4 for depreciation.
