  1. We had a job once where they were present in a floodwall. Had to get various authorities involved and a couple of lads went on a newt handling course so they could move them out of the wall for the brickies to work on it. Not come across them in forestry though
  2. I was in arco the other day, they have Hi-viz goretex clothing now, designed for Road Gans it looked very good. they had trousers, bomber jackets and 3/4length coats all without liners. But all had the facility to zip a fleece into if you wished. Arco are nation wide, I'm going back soon to kit myself out!
  3. Not to mention if you have an accident and your overloaded the police will throw the book at you. Why delibrately set out to overload your vehicle arborist? In the long run it will do you no favours, the drive train is under extra strain and the tipping body will be strained and start to crack up the brakes arn't designed to stop the extra weight and the chassis is designed to a gross weight. Get a vehicle that is more suited to the job or go to the tip more often Sorry to have a pop but it really bugs me when people are hell bent on braking the law, when a lot of us are trying to show that this industry is profesional and we are all working within the law.

  5. 7 grand will get you a very nice 90, definetly a 300TDI with the milage you suggest. Your best bet would be to get hold of the latest LRO or LRM magazine and have a look through the classified ads. They also have buying guides in the back that give price estimations and also the bad bits to look for. Also it would be worth you visiting the http://forums.lr4x4.com/index.php? have a look around and stick a similar post on there as you have here. There are quite a few lads on that forum from your neck of the woods. They'll be able to point you in the best direction of local places. Were you put off a 110? Good luck
  6. Thanks for the replys guy's Glad to hear we are not the only on e that have trouble. Some are back at the dealers again so we'll see what happens. I'm so glad all my own saws are Stihl!
  7. I wouldn't call splitting logs forestry! The PTO will run at the same speed. Turning a hydraulic pump isn't as hard as spinning a flail. I used the tractor & Mower to cut 3 miles of paths every week, The first cut in low box took the grass from 3 feet to 4" tall. The park I sold mine to now use the tractor for forwarding/extraction work in winter the tractor is 7 years old now. I wouldn't have expected it to last that long originallly but it has. I was just giving on honest account of our ownership of one.
  8. I was supposed to take my friends little lad to look at the tractors, weather was that bad we stayed at home and got the train set out!
  9. Well I've owned one! I had it for 18 months I built it myself in about 10hrs, its cheap and cheerfull but served us well, I certainly made it pay for its self with a 5ft flail. I lost my mowing contract so sold the machine to the local country park, Its still going well I've been asked to look at some more mowing work and my well consider another in the future. Its like anything if you look after it, it will serve you well.

  11. At last years National forest woodfair, the chainsaw carvers were cheating by using these to neaten up thier sculptures

  15. yep NFU all the way I've only claimed once and it was so simple they sorted everything.
  16. I to used to work in heavy plant engineering repairing Indeco Hydraulic breakers. I had a lot of Snap on kit, but wasn't that impressed towards the end, in my oppinion Snap on tools are only as good as the local agent. We had one that was all to used to the local village garage. We used to have a hell of a job to get warranty claims out of him, he was allways trying to use the "you've exceeded its maximum torque rating"! not handy. Sods law also said something would break the afternoon after he visited and it would be a week before we'd see him again! A lot of used started buying Halfords Pro stuff as its got a good warranty and if anything did break we could pop in on our way home and have it swapped. We used to use a 3/4 drive 30mm impact socket a hell of a lot, probably for 3-4hrs a day, the snap on socket would last aout a week! wouldn't replace under warranty as it was wear and tear. We ended up using Qualsock sockets very very good would last a couple of months compared to snap on. Snap on has its place, and I feel its in the light/medium automotive industry, and a lot rides on the service of the agent. I'd never say Snap on was rubbish but I'm not at all convinced its the best for every scenario.

  18. Not great pics, But I'd forgotten about this little problem that occured during the summer floods. As the tree was large enough to block the river and the road the local Highways authority took charge. AS I say pics not great cos they haven't posted any pics before they started only halfway through the job.   20. Is that what weight can I carry or a standard 130 with tool box and chip body? There is quite a differance! I have a winch & bumper hydraulic tank and 45 litres of hyd oil on board as well as numeros other bolt on bits. all ofwhich subtract off my payload! I'm not to fussed though as I don't carry chip. my high sides are overkill to hold logs. I can still carry 980kg. The 130 grosses at 3500kg. I can't find an unladen weight of a chassis cab but would expect it to be about 1700kg then you'd need to add a body out of ally I'm not sure what they weigh but would think you'd be looking at about 1200kg payload. interestingly I had a mate with chip box and toolbox and he could only carry 1 ton legally and he hadn't got the 4x4 ability!

  22. we use husky two stroke oil. The 357's must spark as they start from cold, its only when warm they won't start again. With the problem on 6 saws over 5 gangs it seems hard to belive we're all flooding them. I'm begining to think a change of dealer is called for persuading the powers that be is another matter of course!
  23. I'm sure this post will enrage all the Huskey lovers out there but I just wanted to discuss this as I'm getting hacked off. At work we run a dozen or so 357xpg's all of them will start fine from cold and cut happily until you turn em off. When trying to restart, almost half of them won't have it they just refuse point blank to fire! If they are left for half an hour they will start and run fine again until warm and then won't restart. The second pain in the butt are the 372xpg's both the ones we have have similar faults to the above but take an age to warm up, they will tick over but won't rev up to cutting speed for 3-4 mins after starting. All the saws are less than a 2 years old. are used only Oct-March. they are all sent away for service regardless of cost in September before the season starts. but we still get problems. Has anyone else suffered similar? Got any tips. Its not just me as there are several, lads/lassies using the saws and we all moan about the problems. I'm begining to think they are tempremental saws with poor dealer back up as all have beenn back and not been rectified. My own personal saws are all stihls, The old 066 or 88 can sit under the bench for 12 months at a time I'll drag em out, fuel em up two pulls and they are away. the above is really putting me off replacing any of my own saws with a huskey. thoughts please folks
  24. Sorry Bob, depends on the type of organisation running the tractor and trailer. All the ones at work run on white diesel and are taxed as HGV's and have 'O' licences. We don't meet any of the exemptions so if it were not for the off road/multi tasking of the tractor we may as well run an Artic! Ben, This subject keeps cropping up on this forum some one posted some very enlightning info on a previous thread in the large equipment forum.
