  1. I read somewhere, (can't remember where) That Blowers are the worst for HAV's its all to do with the vibration frequency. Also Herad of one county council banning their lads from sharpening chains, they are just replaced with new when blunt. as Vibration levels can't be easily measured as everyone sharpens differently! Not sayingg I agree with any of it but it all made interesting reading!
  2. CAA were on the scene last night, Colin his 5 year old son and his 6year old pal are all confirmed dead. very sad indeed. I wasn't into football and all that when I was at school all I was interested in was rallying. Colin and Richard Burns were my heros.
  3. Ben, I really do recommend Stuart & Curly at DM they no what they are on with, they do sell saws but won't try and just sell you a new saw if they can fix yours they will! Good Luck Matt
  4. Ben, Did you try DM chainsaws in Loughborough? Matt
  5. well that dependson how they would run a new system, it may not need to be anywhere near 300hrs. however if we are talking about the training of new recruits to the industry, then why not have an nvq consisting of say cs 30,31,38,39,and chipper use, with the options of adding other units. so when the trainee is on site with their ganger/boss for say 40hrs a week they can break it down into the various units. so its not just 300hrs cutting wood! As you say it could be fixed quite easily as I'm sure it is in the construction industry, as to the "real Work" all the time the trainee is on site they can be doing real work as they are working with experianced operatives. New digger f drivers don't just sit digging a big hole in a field untill they have 300hrs! they are out on site earning money for the gaffers!
  6. Ok here's idea, if you want to drive any construction machinery these days you go and pass ya course then they give you a red card of competence, you then have to get 300hrs experiannce and complete an NVQ before the red card is replaced with a blue card which means you are qualified and competant. Can't something like this be brought into the arb industry? Obviously time scales and hrs could be changed.
  7. Im afraid I'm a stickler for it, but then I had just a minor accident and the young lad with me for the day hadn't got a clue what to do!. I saw a firm at APF, think they are called ABC response they taylor courses to outside, forestry/arb use.
  8. I think apprentaships should be avliable in the arb industry but that means us employers needto encourage young lads and lasses into the industry and be prepared for them to move on that said most of there training could be government funded then like most other aprentaships. One change I really would like to see is as part of CS30 is some chainsaw related first aid training. the amount of lads that just have a 1/2 or 1 day first aid ticket it is scary! I think there should be a few hrs of training in CS30 that would back up any previous training. I've done the 4 day course and the 1 day first aid at work course and to be honest the 1 day doesn't really do office work justice let alone arb!
  9. was self employed fencing contractor got offered a job as a park ranger got my felling tickets and loved the clear felling projects moved on to rights of way clearance work now back self employed doing fencing and as much treework on the ground I can get while I learn to climb!
  10. I saw the Arb trucks at the trade fair and also at the SED construction show, at the latter it was on the platform providers stand who openly admitted the vehicle was a bit of a balls up as if you fill the chip box with chip you had no where to fold the platform up into! as the box was designed to be the travel position of the basket!
  11. Jenson, we went to a large chipper demo last year which had many of the suppliers there, the jensen seemed to have the best build quality, We now have a 9" tracked Jensen and its awsome, easy to maintain eats timber like its going out a fashion and can track anywhere,
  12. That looks like a very good trailer for the price even more appealing as its on proper leaf springs. I've just picked up our shiney new trailer today from Ifor Williams and its not true that they make all parts in-house some are still bought in. In my oppinion quality has slipped over the years but I think thats a victim of their own success as they speed up manufacturing. Matt
  13. The only pic of mine at the moment 300TDI Land Rover 130 with Hydraulic winch and auxilary circuits for log splitter
  14. Matty, I fitted a hydraulic PTO to a land rover defender and built a good size splitter for about 800 quid, but I already had the Rover! I do all the ringing up on site so everything back at the yard is ready to hit the splitter Matt
  15. I use a trained employee, purly and simply cos I need to know I can trust them, I won't employ anyone without a 4 day first aid ticket either. Matt
  16. all the gear all the time! Been on the wrong end of a saw with full PPE on, It scares the hell out of me to think what might have been if I hadn't been wearing it!
