  1. I hate doing reductions, used to do them all the time as a subby, these days I get someone in to do them for me whenever possible. If it is a proper reduction and not a reshape, then all you need to do is cut the same length off every branch, so the crown is exactly the same shape but say 2 metres smaller all over. Start at the top and work your way down so you don't snap all the little growth points you carefully left in place throwing cut branches down. Lots of the reductions you see posted up here are really reshapes, which is a whole different ball game, you need to have a really good idea of what shape you want to end up with and how much to take off where to achieve it.
  2. I have one of these, that way I can make 2 cups worth at once and the second one is still hot when I'v drunk the first.
  3. The trouble with the cheaper espresso machines is they use a boiler rather than a pump to create pressure. Making coffee with steam rather than water means a bitter flavour, I prefer to buy espresso from someone with a very expensive machine that they know how to use, and make it at home in a plunger.
  4. There aren't any big trees left in this country.
  5. Pics or it didn't happen!
  6. 2 tied together with a little slack in the middle.
  7. At least you didnt have to handball all that timber! Having seen the site, I have to say its a lot tighter than it looks in the pics, and I think you've done a cracking job.
  8. Short and sweet. [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KyQL-5x8Qeo]Assisted Tree Felling - YouTube[/ame]
  9. I'm giving the lads a half day unpaid on the 25th.

    Dead welly

Nice, there is one of a gorilla squatting on some rocks, he carved the gorilla out of the red heartwood and the rocks out of the creamy sapwood, looked stunning but undoubtably lost some of the colours with weathering.

Yes it is, a lot of the big lumps were carved into life sized apes for Go Ape.
  12. I think LEZ will be the biggest issue for you, Euro II like mine it is possible to fit an particulate trap to bring it up to Euro IV, but costs around £7k. Euro III is a bit cheaper to bring up to IV, but will still cost approx £2k. Euro IV trucks are going for silly money, about £15k upwards for what you want. Euro IV came in in Sept 2008, so anything after that date is ok, and a few before it will also be ok, check and double check before you buy!
  13. You need a crane already piped for grab and rotator, very expensive to retrofit. AWD is not really worth it IMO in terms of value for money, get the timber forwarded to roadside and pick it up there.
  14. Dont bother with a 7.5 tonner, payload will be tiny. 18 tonner is ideal, you should get 9-10 tonne payload. Rear mount crane is better, get one with a brick grab and you can straight swap the rotator and grab for a timber rotator and grab. Shorter wheelbase is better for getting in tight spots, have a look at my lorry thread. Also if you use it inside the LEZ you will need a Euro 4 or better lorry.
  15. The white papery sheets are mycelium, the black bootlaces are rhizomorphs.
  16. Until and unless a case goes to court, there is nothing in law to prevent a suitably educated arborist from inspecting their own kit.
  17. SHB specialise in 4x4 hire.
  18. The 50 tonner I use would get in there, I think you'll find most mobile cranes are 8'6" wide.
  19. GT Trax in Royston would be fairly handy for you. I bought two from them for my crane lorry and they are pretty much bulletproof.
  20. Looks like a Bear Cat to me.
  21. I don't really have a problem with the touch screen test, it does the job of keeping anyone who is suicidally stupid off construction sites. There were a few things in the book I didn't know, specifically related to procedure on construction sites. The only advantage i can see to having something industry specific is preventing other trades/cscs card holders from doing tree work. With regard to npts not including general h&s stuff, I meant NPTCs plus touch screen test equal arborist category, not that you could skip doing it.
  22. Most of the cscs sites iv been on dont know or care about NPTC, as long as you have a cscs card your ok. IF and it's a big if, cscs could be persuaded to recognise NPTC/lantra as a prerequisite for arborists, and indeed add arb to the list of occupations, then we would be getting somewhere.
  23. Some, but not all. Most of the big specimen trees come from Italy or Holland. Some Japanese Maples come from New Zealand, although it takes them a year or two to adjust to the seasons.
  24. Is that why my saw smelt funny after you fixed it up?
