  1. If you are thinking about planting trees to supply future fire wood needs, then you could look into a coppice system. It would take a few years to get up and running, but it would produce nice straight even sized stems for firewood production, and it would be easy to harvest with minimal equipment.
  2. The quest for world domination continues!
  3. Get some piccies mate. Just tell the owner its galloping pine rot and it needs felling pronto.
  4. The original height varied between 40' and 80-90'. Over the whole contract, I have no idea, on the jobs we did, around 30-40 trees.
  5. It wasnt all that tempting, even from down here. The work was great, but the contract gave a lot of people a lot of sleepless nights and unpleasant conversations with bank managers ect. The companies that did best out of were the small subcontractors such as myself, the main players didnt end up with much change after paying all the bills!
  6. Ha, everyone knows about that job! We were on it almost exactly a year ago.
  7. No, AHS had the lot. The whole contract was for 2000 trees, most of them big gnarly old pops, and they chipped every stick for biomass. Our job was only a drop in the ocean really.
  8. Burnt in Belgium.
  9. Who, the RAF? Wasnt much time for fancypants eco arbery, at the price we did that job for the client counted it a bonus if the right trees had the right things done to them! The cleanup wasnt too bad, with a 14 tonne excavator and grapple, and a 300hp 30"x36" chipper.
  10. Slight optical illusion there, the foreshortening effect makes it seem that way.
  11. Cheers. One of those pics is actually Ed climbing, we had a bit of a contest going to see who could knock off the biggest chunk, which ended up with us spiking up 4 metres and felling whole trees. Great fun!
  12. Heres a little taster...
  13. I"ll do it for you Charlie, Mr Ed an I pollarded and felled over a hundred manchester pops last year. I'm sure he'll get some pics up for you. The trees we pollarded at 4 metres were basically standing deadwood, there was little expectation of them ever regrowing, although they all had a bacterial leaf disease.
  14. Can I borrow that sometime Matt, I could do with learning something useful for a change!
  15. Actually, its not that wide or impressive looking, just very tall and perfectly in proportion. Its in Dorset, and its the tallest broadleaf in the uk. Stealth climbing only....

  18. Seems to be an option missing in your poll Steve.......
  19. Actually it was a glorious day, up near Blackburn, once the mist had gone. Driving back into Manchester was like going into low cloud though, grey and gloomy!
  20. Todays wee gem. Heavily decayed beech on steep slope over river. Everything roped down onto the path on the left.
  21. I can only imagine that he is referring to Jeremy Barrell, the eminent arb consultant, since that is the occasion I can think of where that spelling is used. Still doesnt make any sense though!

More of a minimix than a mashup really [ame=http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=nYKKmI9q--A&feature=related]http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=nYKKmI9q--A&feature=related[/ame]
  23. A low profile stealthy ninja style night climb? Sounds interesting!
