  1. Peter

    My new toy.

And thats why yours is for sale?
  2. I hate programmes that show you the same 1 minute clip over and over again, cut into 5 second slivers and played in different orders to deceive those you arnt really watching...
  3. Mine aren't, they are looking distinctly grumpy today. Mind you they are two and half years old, cant wait to get moved house and get some young blood in the flock!
  4. ceased=seized?
  5. Chain too slack, or revs too high at tickover.
  6. I'd put the signs and cones on there and all. Save no end of time setting up!
  7. I'm sure they would
  8. Quite right Dean, you should also have had a man walking in front of the vehicle with a red flag, and observed a 5mph speed limit during your uncontrolled skid.
  9. No, not at all. As informed end users, we should be able to compare like with like. How the supplier gets those prices is none of my business, as long as it is legitimate. Whereas domestic tree work clients are mostly clueless about what makes a good tree job or a poor one.
  10. The obvious answer is yes. I can think of 3 sizable firms straight off who do both, or have done both up to a point, and then split the business. Evidently people dont have a problem buying from these companies, otherwise they would be out of business. I buy from whoever does the best price and best service. Perhaps the question is really should companies do both? I think these companies exist out of necessatity, tree surgery firm struggles finding the kit, so they set up importing equipment and reselling it, or they start building their own chippers. I can think of a major uk chipper manufactorer who positively advertise this fact. So are you thinking of getting into tree work then?
  11. What the quickest way of getting warm in a landy? Set it alight.
  12. I love this album too, which has ten years on everybody knows, although it is somewhat spoilt by the cobain connection. I duck out well before Trans tho....... [ame=http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=lXN5jtFZEt4]http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=lXN5jtFZEt4[/ame]

  14. Thats a great idea. The worst thing about lombardies is all the spiking up and down.
  15. Keep the old rope for conifers. Olive oil is supposed to remove sap, might be worth a try.
  16. If its a letterbox feed you're after, have you looked at the newer greenmechs? I used a 7x9" feed and it was most impressive. I dont think the american manufactorers really understand 6" chippers.
  17. The so called vat cut is a con. The cut is being paid for by other permanent tax increases. Fuel duty has gone up, so the forecourt price is unaffected. Just to add insult to injury, when the rate goes back up, fuel duty and the other tax increases will remain in force, so the so called tax cut is actually three tax increases. And yes, just like decimalisation, there will be sneaky price increases, although the exchange rate against the euro and the dollar are conspiring to put prices up in the uk anyway.
  18. It was pretty windy where I was working today, up a big ash on top of a hill in Rawtenstall. Taking a big top out into the wind, even though it was perfectly weighted in the direction of fell, the wind kept pushing it back onto my saw. Had to put a pull line in it in the end. Plus the wind blowing the sawdust into my face was like being sandblasted. Very irritating!
  19. Hazel, alder, ash, sycamore. Plant small, start the coppice early. If you are working on a five year rotation you will have to spend five years planting before you get much harvest, but long term its the best way of getting the most firewood out of a given area of land.
  20. If you are thinking about planting trees to supply future fire wood needs, then you could look into a coppice system. It would take a few years to get up and running, but it would produce nice straight even sized stems for firewood production, and it would be easy to harvest with minimal equipment.
  21. The quest for world domination continues!
  22. Get some piccies mate. Just tell the owner its galloping pine rot and it needs felling pronto.
  23. The original height varied between 40' and 80-90'. Over the whole contract, I have no idea, on the jobs we did, around 30-40 trees.
  24. It wasnt all that tempting, even from down here. The work was great, but the contract gave a lot of people a lot of sleepless nights and unpleasant conversations with bank managers ect. The companies that did best out of were the small subcontractors such as myself, the main players didnt end up with much change after paying all the bills!
  25. Ha, everyone knows about that job! We were on it almost exactly a year ago.
