    bats in trees

All the jobs I'v been on where we had to bring in a bat man (or woman), were commercial jobs where the client could well afford to pay, and the costs of the survey were small change compared to the overall cost of the project. In those circumstances I think its a small price to pay for bat conservation. In small domestic jobs a bit of common sense goes a long way, and bat awareness isnt expensive or complicated. All in all bats deserve a bit of respect, imo.
  2. My truck looks just like that, only loaded dangerously high with conifer, and a load of logs piled on top!
  3. Not really tried it on a windy day, but I had one of the incredible disintegrating proclimber cubes and it is a vast improvement on that!
  4. Yup, I think there may still be a Gomtaro on there somewhere, between the melon baller and a tool for getting boy scouts out of horses hooves.
  5. Yup, its the biggest silky handsaw, the Sugoi 420. Wont use anything else personally.

    New pulley

I'm getting two Bob, so you had better get three or four, otherwise you wont be keeping up!
  7. This one was blocking up with wet but leafless poplar! I think it was a 790, although I could be wrong about that.
  8. There is so much confusion over all this, even from those in authority, dvla, police, vosa ect. B+E entitles you to tow a trailer of up to 3500kg, with a towing vehicle of up to 3500kg (all MAM weights obviously), provided the vehicle and trailer plated weights are adhered to etc.
  9. Sweet! Is that seasoned wood?
  10. If the plate says 7500kg, then your B licence doesnt cover you regardless of what other exemptions may apply. That is my opinion. If you did get pulled, even if there is a loop hole that covers you, the officer who stops you may not even be aware of it. Even if you are in the right, they can make things very awkward for you.
  11. Fixed your link There is something similar, but with a smaller chipper, available in europe. Sure there are some pictures around somewhere.
  12. I have used a big woodsman, wasnt overly impressed. It didnt seem to have the ability to pull in or crush as it should, and the chute would block constantly unless the flap underneath it was open all the time. Havent used the conehead personally so i cant really compare the two.
  13. Keep the rope as vertical and straight as possible at all times. So when you bring your feet up and make the lock, before standing up on it tuck your feet under your bum, and get straight before standing up. That way you wont waste energy by pushing horizontally away from you, all your effort goes into vertical lift. Hope that makes sense. Slow down to concentrate on technique, try to make everything flow together in one smooth action, lock, thrust, push up all in one smooth continuous motion.
  14. Thanks for posting that Will, very interesting project.
  15. What do you mean, crap? I might just need a lemon juicer in the tree one day, and if it wasnt strapped to the back of my harness, I'd look very silly.
  16. A Nissan Patrol copy made by Tata?
  17. No, thats just the sunlight glinting off the black paint.
  18. Have you ever thought about getting them shotblasted and clear lacquered? Thats what I always do with my trucks.
  19. Cheers for that Iain.
  20. C1+E is the minimum required. However, to get there he needs to do C1, followed by C1+E, so one theory test, followed by two practical tests. The two practical tests are the same tests as for category C and C+E, so if you can swing it, I would suggest you get him through those instead, as he will then have a full HGV licence, which would be potentially useful to both the council and employee. I have done C+E, its not easy but with the right tuition anyone should be able to pass. To get through both tests will cost around £2000. You need to get in touch with your local LGV training companies, they are usually very helpful and will arrange the licence application, medical, and theory test, before booking him in for 2-3 days training before each practical test.
  21. Cheapskate!
  22. I would say if even one strand has been completely severed, then it is time to cut it down. In this case, as its gecko, I would throw it away and buy a decent rope instead!
  23. Cut it down then. Not worth the risk imo. If it is fairly new and clean you may be able to get a new eye splice put on it.
  24. Have you severed any of the strands? What rope is it, and how new is it?
  25. Depends on the terrain, bit lower on soft ground with a big load of kit on for maximum spread and flotation, but for downhill racing on firm grass then as high as you dare.
