The French royal family obviously cost zero.
Their palaces, art galleries and vast estates still exist and have more visitors than any country on earth, generating huge revenues, so the actual royals are surplus to requirements it would seem.

Very true but I do think the manner in which the French got rid of their Monarchy might have something to do with how it’s captured people’s imagination over the years. Not quite sure if it would be anywhere near as dramatic if it ever occurs here. Probably a weak willed arrangement somewhat like the Queen's tax deal a few years back, the same one that avoided Chuck paying inheritance tax recently.

Good point, but I don’t think gaining £90m to potentially lose £1.7bn is worth the risk.
