it all comes down to culture. English culture (pre-Blair) is superior to anything else on he planet. Certainly any of the shit hole African/Pakistan/middle East/Communist Countries.

The rule of law and trade, English abolishing and enforcing the abolition of Slavery on the high seas on her own, medicine, science, industrial etc etc

At every measure English culture is vastly superior and its a great pity it wasn't enforced more to civilise the affirmationed countries they would be much better off for it now.

You're a complete anachronism mate.

Have you ever heard of the ancient Chinese, Egyptian, South American, Middle Eastern, even Zimbabwean cultures? Most of them were highly civilised well before the "Great" British Empire, we were still grovelling around in the mud when they had their heydays.

Colonialism = Theft by any measure. Good research project done by a guy on R4 on how the British were buying cotton from India, he estimated they robbed the Indians out of ( corrected to todays prices) abt 4t Sterling in tax scams, during occupation and State incomes the Indians would have had.  K

Perhaps theft and all the other numerous barbaric and criminal things that we did don't matter if they're in "shit hole" countries. [emoji848]

No. Being in  a country thats a 'shithole'  will make you think  of putting on ' a rucksack' and going off to visit those who made yr country a 'shithole'  thats the issue now. Provoked by people in same 'shithole' for their purposes. K

( cleverer thinking is what is needed here)

Where do we draw the line?

What point in history do we go back to? What if the artefacts we took were built using materials mined by slaves? What if the people were sacrificing people to their gods?

What about Israel, what gave us the right to take that land of the people who had lived there for generations and give it to those who claimed their ancestors lived there first, but had not lived there for generations?

People talk like this is all very simple it's "white SUCCESSFUL" people bad, brown or black people good. Who sold the slaves?

I don't know the answers, but do know its very complex and possible there is no fair way to sort it out.

Not really in relation to the topic concerned but a general observation in as much as you seem to hate the UK and everything about it. I’ve yet to hear you say anything good about our nation for months now  🤷‍♂️. Just curious have you lived, worked or possibly been deployed anywhere around the world  ?? In particular Africa or the Middle East ??.
I don’t entirely agree 100% with the post Donk put up in it’s entirety but if you’d ever experienced some  other countries and cultures then often things are not as bad here as is made out, and yes whilst every European colonial power did it for self enrichment the British did tend to leave a bit of good behind which is what he is implying I think. Not to say bad deeds were not committed as we all know they were,

@sime42  exactly, its complex. First step is acknowledgement then engagement. The  Truth and Reconcilliation committee in South Africa has done some good work, but in no way can you turn the clock backwards. But those people in the 'shithole' countries need a future otherwise why stop? A man who has nothing to lose has nothing to fear. K

How much acknowledgment and engagement do you require ?? Or is it hand wringing apologies by politicians every other year for historical events that often took place  before any of us were even born. Take a look at many of the cultures especially in Africa but not confined too by any means and see what different ethnic groups are capable of doing to each other regardless of colour. We luckily have the privilege to be able to view from afar events that hopefully will never occur here. Thanks in no small part to  the culture so many are often keen to deride.
