The French royal family obviously cost zero.
Their palaces, art galleries and vast estates still exist and have more visitors than any country on earth, generating huge revenues, so the actual royals are surplus to requirements it would seem.

Very true but I do think the manner in which the French got rid of their Monarchy might have something to do with how it’s captured people’s imagination over the years. Not quite sure if it would be anywhere near as dramatic if it ever occurs here. Probably a weak willed arrangement somewhat like the Queen's tax deal a few years back, the same one that avoided Chuck paying inheritance tax recently.

Good point, but I don’t think gaining £90m to potentially lose £1.7bn is worth the risk.

I can't see the benefit of them financially, it seems ridiculous to me have a royal family in 2023, I reckon they should get jobs or sign on the dole.

I grew up on Deeside, next door to Deeside is Donside. 

 

One of the river valleys has a choice of cafés in every village, hotels galore, tourist attractions, bike hire shops and caravan parks. All of these providing employment and income for the local population. 

 

On the other river you're lucky to find one café in a village let alone have a choice. The few hotels are thread bare and struggling to survive. The upper reaches are sparsely populated by folk scraping a living from hill sheep crofts.

 

The difference is Balmoral and the royal influence. The tourists that visit the Royal residence bring a huge amount of much needed money to a relatively remote local economy.

I thought that was going to be Daniel MacAskill, it's the crazy kind of stunt that he pulls. Undoubtedly impressive but you've got to ask why. I think Red Bull have more money than sense sometimes, but maybe it's all just good marketing and promotion.

Can you imagine the area round Balmoral etc. getting the interest it does without the Monarchy?

 

Fast forward 20 years.

 

It wouldn’t be the same mate.

That’s jobs lost.
